My parents, my aunt and uncle, and my grandfather all are DVC members. I don't know all the details but I know our family gets a lot of use out of it!!! In fact I'm going the last week of June on my parent's points 
I would say go for it but like I said I don't know all the financial details, I'm just telling you from a child's (well 25 yr old) point of view that reeks the benefits.

If you like Disney, it is well worth it. Most will say it is not, however, we have found that the average trip costs only a fraction when you spread the cost of the membership over the entire owendership. We are using our points to go on the European cruise next summer. By my calcualtions, the 6 of us would cost about 12,000 for 2 Cat 10 rooms. By using my points it is only costing me 4800. Using the DVC resorts is great considering how expensive rooms are getting. You also avoid Florida's huge hotel tax. Email me if you need more info - tourwdw@tourwdw.com

Click on where it says, "Discussion Forums" with the Mickey ears and scroll down to the Disney Vacation Club forums. You'll find plenty of threads concerning the DVC as well as 7 pages of posts from happy members. We're one of them since 1999.

I am a Member and a Cast Member for DVC... DEFINATELY CHECK OUT THE DISNEY VACATION CLUB SECTION of the messageboards!!!
We're members, and we think it's definitely been worth it so far (joined last June).
