Using points for a cruise

My friend and I had booked a 7 night cruise for this coming October. Our plan was to put down our deposit and make payments. In the meantime, I thought I'd see if I could use some points for my half of the trip. The DVC rep said I could, but we'd have to pay for the other half up front. When we booked on line, our final payment wasn't due until early August. Any idea why we'd have to pay all now?

I'm guessing, since DVC owners are essentially paying 100% "up front" when they use points to book a cruise, splitting a cruise between points and cash means the cash portion also has to be paid up front. It's not like you would pay x amount of points one month, and y amount of points the next month.
