We've seen a lot of discussion on the boards about using old video in commercials, promo videos, and other telvision/video projects. Some examples... wandless Spaceship Earth, 20K still in operation, Disneyland attraction footage in WDW commercials, etc. So the question is: does it really matter?

My personal opinion (Flame me not, gentle brethren)...
Yes, it does matter. Even if only the die-hard fans notice, there's a principle to uphold. Take a look at any of the imagineering books and you'll likely see the story of Walt and the Wagon. At Disneyland, the imagineers were developing a stagecoach-style wagon. The imagineers did not think that it was necessary to suspend it from leather straps (as they really were made), but Walt felt it was very important. The imagineers protested that no one would notice anyway, but Walt stated that it should still be accurate -- he said even if no one noticed exactly what was wrong, they would feel that something was out of place, and it would make the experience seem less real.

old video

I've always been facinated by the detail done by Disney since my first trip to Disneyland, well maybe the "old" Disney. If old video shows something that is now missing, "20K" or the like, it shouldn't be used. Isn't there any truth in advertising?
I'm glad I don't have to explain to my kids that some attraction missing.

I think it matters for two reasons. One is that it's not a real representation of what the park truly offers. (For example, showing 20k sub ride when there isn't one.) It is, in the most base sense of the word a lie.

The second is that it's example of "Disney on the Cheap." Something which I feel has progressively gotten worse over the years as the profit and not the experience is put to the forefront. It's lazy and cheap to use old footage. People expect more from Disney then that and they should strive to exceed, not just scrape by people's expectations.
