If I brought my laptop so I could quickly get in touch with my daughter while on ship, how does that work?? Do I pay by the minute and they charge to my room?? or can I buy a certain amount of time??

It is 75 cents per minute to connect, on a per minute basis. Or they have aackage deals, A block of 500 minutes is around $150 (30 cents pet minute). They have smaller blocks too, I think 100 and 250 for smaller discounts. Oddly enough it seems to vary from cruise to cruise.

They also have an internet cafe on each ship, so if all you want to do is log onto a mail site for a few minutes, you can do that and not have to bring a laptop. It costs the same per minute as the internet access rates.

If you're only going to do a brief check in, you're probably better off paying by the minute.
On the Magic and Wonder there are computers set up to use if you like. On the Dream and Fantasy you can borrow a laptop to check in.
If you don't feel like bringing your own! :)

One Little Spark...
I brought the iPad and Laptop on my last trip on the Fantasy...

I bought three of the $150 packages (1500 minutes), but I was able to expense them at work.

I ended up about 200 minutes shy of 1500...but, it worked well. Better in some parts of the ship than others (worked great in midship, for example), but far better than I expected. I was able to connect to all company resources (VPN, remote access, email, secure chat, etc) that I needed.

I wouldn't try and stream videos over it (though I did fiddle on YouTube a bit and it worked ok), and I did have issues uploading larger files and pictures.

Still, it was very relaxing not to walk into a firestorm from work when the boat got back from the trip, or try and find wifi access in port of calls to catch up.

The reason I bring this up is...there wasn't much delay...so, while "pay per minute" harkens back to the old dial up days, when planning out how many minutes you anticipate using, most services are going to be very responsive. So, it's not going to take you much longer to say, check and send emails, than it does on land. Therefore, if that's all you plan to use it for a few times on your trip...pay by minute!

One thing to note...when you sign in to the internet service from your personal devices, there is a special sign out link you MUST use when you are done with the Internet. It's worth stopping by guest services and picking up one of their instructional handouts if you are unsure about the system.

If you don't, even if you shut off your computer or disconnect from their wifi, your meter will continue to run and you will be charged. Just keep that in mind.

Cheers!

I took my laptop on both cruises. Less for internet use and more to do a once a day photo card dump to my hard drive. I'd to lose everything because my SD card flakes out. Anyway, I just bought by the minute, but had trouble getting my provider's webmail to work. Also, if you choose to use Facebook, even for a minute expect to jump through hoops. Facebook detects its not your usual computer and makes you identify things on your page to verify its really you. Thats what happened to me in the internet cafe anyway.

YMMV. :)

I didn't have any issues on Facebook or my email service, I have had issues in hotels but using my own IPad or PC it didn't matter where I was

We got off the ship while in port and took our laptops and Nintendo DSIs to a counter-service restaurant with free wireless. We were having four and five meals per day on the ship, so we just ordered a medium pizza to split between the five of us and spent an hour each on the internet.
