Upgrades

I am new to the site. I am going to WDW and staying at Pop Century in September. I have 2 children but they will be staying home for this trip. This will be a second honeymoon for my wife and I. We are celebrating her b-day, our wedding anniversary, and the fact that she beat cancer this year. I want to make the trip as special as possible, but I can not afford any of the other resorts at this time. We have stayed at Port Orleans Riverside and at the Polynesian on other occasions but for the most part we have stayed at the value resorts. We really like Pop more than the All-Stars, but I really want to suprise my wife with a better hotel. My question is, has anyone ever had a free upgrade from one hotel class to another? In my case from value to moderate. I have heard stories of people calling before their trips and getting upgrades. Has anyone had this experience? Thanks in advacnce!!

Are you aware that by going in Sept. and staying at a WDW resort, that you can get the free dining? As long as you purchase at least a one day ticket per person you qualify. If you were not aware of this, then the money you were planning on spending on food could now go towards a moderate resort. Plus, you can treat your wife to some of the finer restaurants that you might not have been able to splurge on. I think you have till close to the end of June twentysomething, to make reservations. There are A LOT of threads about this and I'm sure you will get a lot of help.

BTW, welcome! and sounds like you and your wife have a wonderful reason to celebrate!

Upgrade at the same resort from standard to preferred room yes. Upgrade from a value to a moderate not unless there is some major mistake made by the resort such as overbooking etc.

The surest way not to receive an upgrade is to ask for one.

So are you saying to keep quiet and hope for the best basically? We're staying at CBR this fall and not in one of the 'preferred' rooms. However, I have read on here where many check in and get upgraded. I was wondering how that would come about. Sounds like luck of the draw.

I have been moved from standard view to garden view in the same resort with no charge and no asking for it but never a jump from a value resort to a moderate resort.

Back in May I was given a free upgrade from Pop Century to a Villa at the Old Key West Resort (I think they were trying to get me interested in the Vacation Club).
But from what I understand such "surprise" upgrades are very rare and cannot be requested.

You may not get an upgrade, but be sure to ask for a King bed room with a water view. My husband and I stayed in one a couple of summers ago and it was great. Having only one bed made the room seem bigger, and on the back side of the 50s building where we were it was very quiet and secluded. Be aware that the King rooms are also handicapped accessible so you won't have a bathtub, just a "roll-in" shower, but since we didn't have kids with us we didn't need a tub.

Also make sure to let them know what you are celebrating. Because you never know!! Especially during the Year of Dreams!
