We are renting some DVC points for next year. It is my parents 40th anniversary, and we are all getting studios at Animal Kingdom. It works out best for the group for everyone to have their own space. Its three adult couples - my parents in their 60s, myself and husby (30s) and my lil bro and gf (late 20s).

I know that AKL doesnt offer king size bed single rooms through the DVC. I was wondering if anyone has ever received an upgrade to a better room?

Im thinking maybe disney might hook my parents up if possible? Ive heard amazing stories of people getting upgraded to better rooms. I know not to count on it and its totally random.

Anyone heard of someone in DVC getting upgraded to a better but nonDVC room?

I've not heard of this happening.

The only time you would get an upgrade at AKL is if you were staying on cash. Staying on DVC points it's almost unheard of. Sorry.

I have never heard of anyone staying on DVC points being changed over to a regular cash room. Simply doesn't happen. And some of the "amazing" stories that you read about on the internet are bunk. Take them with a grain of salt. Most are not true.

The closest I've ever had to an upgrade was when my wife and I had a brief stay at the Grand Californian before it had DVC. We were there for a few days on our honeymoon and I called asking for an upgrade. They said we were staying on points and there was nothing they could do. However, when we arrived, they had rose petals in the shape of a heart on our bed and a welcome card. That's about the extent of it.

Timeshares don't operate the same way hotels do. Complimentary upgrades are exceedingly rare on point stays at DVC resorts. Generally, only if there's some sort of maintenance emergency that makes the room they were going to assign you to uninhabitable, and there are no other rooms of that category available.

It's not a good idea to ask about upgrading at check-in. You can't upgrade a DVC room for cash, and -though this shouldn't happen - there have been a number of reports of the points being taken out of a member's account when a renter asks to upgrade. The member then goes to book their own family vacation and finds their account drained of points. Not a good situation.

When you rent DVC, you're pretty much locked into what you've booked. It sounds like you haven't booked yet, so if you decide that you want to treat your parents to an upgrade, you can just book the larger room for them.

Yeah the problem is that there's a giant jump in price from a studio which only offers queen beds to the 1 bedroom. Which I'm not even sure if those are offered with kings.

It's just odd that none of the single rooms have kings. We can't be the only adult couples going without kids!

No, but plenty of adult couples are fine with a queen. In college, I remember the twin mattresses...well, that's a different story for a different day.

All 1 bedroom units have a king bed in the bedroom. The reason for the huge jump in points is the full kitchen, washer/dryer, whirlpool tub, and separate living areas. When it's just my wife and I, we prefer a 1 bedroom over a studio. Love all the extra amenities, and the extra points are worth it to us. Of course, we are owners, and don't rent out our points. We use them!!
