UPDATE: Walt Disney Pictures tells us that yes, it's true that the project is in development, but the story at Caribbean Business is not accurate. The original post follows:

Last year, it was reported that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides co-writer Terry Rossio had turned in a script for a possible fifth installment of the popular Walt Disney Pictures franchise. Today, Caribbean Business (via The Film Stage) is reporting that the studio has selected Puerto Rico to mount the majority of the pending production.

“Disney just confirmed that they have picked Puerto Rico over Hawaii,” Puerto Rico Film Commission Executive Director Mariella Pérez said. The site added that filming is expected to begin in November.

Scenes from the fourth film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, were shot in Puerto Rico two years ago, but the bulk of franchise has been shot in Hawaii.

At this point, details on a fifth few film are few and no cast or director has, as of yet, been announced.

"On Stranger Tides," released in May of last year, was directed by Rob Marshall and grossed over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. That film starred Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Kevin R. McNally, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Sam Claflin and Geoffrey Rush.

I absolutely love this series but I think it's had it's time. It's obvious much of the cast feels the same since even the 4th didn't have some of the key folks back for it. Don't get me wrong, I'll definitely watch it if it is made but I just don't think it's necessary.

Agreed. I enjoyed the first one tremendously! The second was pretty good, but by the third, it was getting old.

Cast didn't return because of they wanted too much money.

Simple $$$$$$ and more $$$$$$

People like the movies and they will make more until the franchise stops making money.

Thats it. Contrary to what many people think, this series is still highly popular and make money. Also, Johnny Depp is a big draw; if he were to leave the franchise then it wouldn't make sense to make any more.

I won't pretend that money wasn't most likely the primary factor for them not coming back, but I'm sort of glad they changed gears for the fourth movie. If you have a dozen characters who each need to have their own part in the story every time, it really constrains you. That's how you end up with Kim Bauer getting chased by a mountain lion in 24. That said, I didn't really like the story they came up with for On Stranger Tides when they were free of said constraints, so it's no guarantee.

Why do they keep making these???
2 reasons: People like it and are willing to shell out their hard earned dollars to see these movies... The second reason being that Mr. Depp is committed to the role of Jack. When either of those two factors will change (I'm guessing the latter will come first) then we can expect the pirates to take a nap.

They could really make an outstanding concluding film with this 5th installment, and tie-up all the loose ends to the story brilliantly. Consider this:

We know from the ending of the 4th film that Serena has taken Philip underwater for some reason (possibly to heal/save him?) That is uncertain, as all we know is that she pulled him beneath the surface and the rest is left untold until this next film is released. Is she a good mermaid who legitimately wants to help him? Or does she have more sinister origins like her mer-peers? That we do not know. I'm assuming she's good...possibly the only good mermaid in the clan who doesn't want to feast on the flesh of men. So considering the Serena/Philip cliffhanger at the end of film #4, and how she pulls him underwater, it is safe to assume that a key plot point of film #5 will take place (you guessed it) underwater. Maybe we will see where the mermaids come from. Perhaps we will learn why they (most) are "evil" and attack sailors. So with all that in mind...why not link together somehow the Flying Dutchman/Will Turner's crew with the mer-people? Afterall, he can survive underwater, and spends most his time at sea or underwater, as we learned at the end of film #3. Great way to tie in two different plot points with one another.

Barbossa needs to turn bad again, and be the film's main villain just like he was in the first film. He has control of Blackbeard's ship & sword. He has the power he's always craved. We already have enough characters with cliffhanger stories to wrap up from the previous four films. I feel it would complicate things too much to introduce a brand new villain in film #5. Make Barbossa the ruthless, cutthroat antagonist that the character is supposed to be. An ultimate showdown between Jack & Barbossa would be a great climactic battle for the franchise. (imo)

As for Angelica, I see her being a character in the 5th film that is very similar to Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises...we never really know who's side she's on until the end. Have her team up with Barbossa & his crew for awhile outta spite for Jack Sparrow. Have her switch sides several times. Part of her loves Jack, yet part of her wants revenge. Ultimately, have her turn out with Jack in the very end, despite going from ally to enemy throughout the story.

And finally...bring back the Black Pearl crew. Jack's mission, as we know from the end of film #4, will be to free the Pearl. Barbossa said the crewmembers all died after being attacked by Blackbeard, but this could be false, and only a coverup to their true whereabouts. Either way, bring back Pintel, Ragetti, and the crew we've come to know in order to make this series come full circle.

Just a few thoughts on how I'd love to see the series conclude. It will be interesting to see what unfolds.

i liked the first film, but 2&3 were just really all over the place. so much going on. the 4th was more simplified and i liked that movie. leaving out keira and orlando was a good choice. not sure if id like to see them return though?

i do agree with the post above, the 5th film hopefully will reprise the story of the mermaid and the priest (seems a little keira/orlando all over again though) this really should be the final film.

God knows I love Pirates, but I sincerely hope this is the last one. It's clear the company is milking this franchise for as much money as possible. Enough is enough. I am going to try to make it to the premiere for this one:D

Exactly. Watch, there will be a sixth one. *sigh*

they aren't bad films... but how much further can you stretch it.

To Worlds End and the Last one, phew... once you start losing original cast members they go downhill.

Bloom was a great character in the series
