Update Downloads for the Wii: Is It Worth It?

I just got my Wii. I know they have the Wii 24 thing that constantly downloads updates. But, my Wii is brand new and is working fine.

I am hesitant to turn the update feature on because I've always had bad luck with updating programs on the computer.

Do you get a choice on what to update and what not to update. Are there any worthwhile updates that the Wii gives you, or are they mostly little patches and fixes?

I've had my Wii connected and updating since its release date. It updates automatically, mostly at night but sometimes during the day. The updates are usually patches and fixes, along with new things in the Wii Shop Channel, such as new retro games or new Channels for download.

So far there hasn't been any problems with it, so I'm convinced that its safe

You should definitely download all of the updates, etc. There has been a major update on the Wii recently that updates it to Version 3.0 which adds a digital clock to the channels section and makes news stream across the news channel and puts the weather right on the weather channel.

I started my Wii today while it was starting to update and it displayed a message that said if you hold the power button down on the Wiiimote for about 4 seconds while it is updating, it will abort the update.

I still stand by my above comment that updates are worth it though.

So, there is no way to stop the updates?

You ONLY have to update if you want to, but it's recommended.

Console vs. PC updating is totally different. PC there's a billion variables, while Console the manufacturers have all the revisions and test it on them before release.

You don't have to update at all. If you don't want it to update without your control - just don't connect it to the internet.

That's what I'm getting at.

So, there's no way to connect to the internet like the News or Weather channel without turning the updates on?

You can connect to the internet and such, but updates require your approval. Weather and news come THROUGH updates.

Just update, why are you worried, PC and Wii are two different things.

Mine is always connected via wi-fi and runs just fine. It's worth it, as the updates are usually improvements - making your expereience better :)

hmmmm... not updating a device that might hold your cc details for virtual console - bad move. I really dont understand the issue. From time to time devlopers release patches (often critical)

With consoles getting more advanced (and more importantly most able to hold cc details - updates are required).

Please tell me you update windows...
