"unmagical"

I went for one day at MK and EP yesterday. While we all had our laughs about that "unmagical" complaint, I couldn't help but think that, if I was a 1st timer, this potentially could have sucked. When we arrived, the "parking police" were not doing a great job of directing traffic. They had blocked off the normal path to handicapped so handicap had to stay on the same path as regular traffic but, at the point that they were parking cars, they were pointing handicap further down...to no one. We had to drive through the massive crowds gathering for the trams, which I was really uncomfortable with as I drive a suburban and there were little kids running around everywhere, with no one saying where to go after that. I ended up going up some down lanes getting over to the back up handicap area and self parking. Odd. Even at almost 12, the TTC was packed. I had to activate new APs so we stood in that line for over 45min. Monorails are down weekly between 11am-7pm. No resort or MK line. Only the Ferry which had a massive crowd backed up even in front of the monorail ramps. From the time I got on property til I stepped foot on Main St was over 2hrs! :O I was beyond surprised. While I wasn't complaining and just readjusted my plans for the day, people around me were definitely upset. I even overheard a guy talking about how Disney's lost the magic and wasn't what it used to be. I kinda rolled my eyes, at first, but then realized what it must be like for 1st timers.

I was prepared for the castle's cranes and the drained moat, I didn't know the work was actually being done during park hours. They were up there painting the roof tiles of the castle which created a lot of noise that could even be heard at parade time. On one hand, I find the drained moat interesting. On the other, it was quite ugly with misc. work supplies everywhere. Of course, splash was still closed. I had a bit of a chuckle. We rode the CoP. While that place could use some serious love, I had to laugh that they "updated" the 90s scene by adding a flat screen TV. It looked so out of place! haha. I figure the projection TV they had in there must have gone out requiring replacement but a flat screen was very out of place with the clothing and decor.

When we left MK to hop over to EP, it was 630 so still no monorails. They were roped off so we joined the masses for the boat. I did check for a bus and saw they added one single bus to TTC. Disney, while I understand the work schedule is what it is, the compensation for crowd movement and control was very poor. When I was arriving to MK, there were 3 ferries, but the extra docks weren't being used so there was a traffic jam with the Ferries. 1 bus to go back and forth to the TTC wasn't even putting a dent in the crowd. When we got back, we hopped to monorail over to EP. From walking through the MK gates to walking in the gates of EP took over an hour. Our time at EP went rather well and am happy to see torch #7 was finally firing up. After Illuminations, when we headed back to the TTC, there appeared to only be one monorail making that run. From the end of Illuminations to the time I got to my car was almost an hour and a half.

I'm aware this is probably old news but I'm glad to see WIFI property-wide. I'm sure the MDE app is the main reason. Once my APs were activated, I was given the option to do FP+ on MDE for whatever day I choose. Of course, I couldn't do multiple parks. Oh well.

While I'm not complaining about our day, I definitely heard people that were unhappy and saw why.

I thought that the only monorails affected were the MK monorails. I'm sure I read that the Epcot line was remaining open all day.

Well, that is not good news. You are right about the first timers. That is unfortunate about the work on the castle disturbing the parade.

Two hours from setting foot on property to setting foot on main street is totally unacceptable. 20% of a 10 hour day just to get from the parking lot to the attractions after paying $100 per person is exactly why the magic is gone. I understand maintenance schedules too, but this serious lack of alternative transportation shows a total disrespect for the paying customers. It makes me feel much better about out decision to give our money to DCL this year instead of WDW.

it was running. I said the resort and MK [express] lines were down.
You are correct. I apologize, I misread that one sentence to mean that the Epcot monorail wasn't running. Sorry!

You're right, and, at one point, the thought came to mind about them raising prices just last month. That price hike was definitely poorly timed. You can't jack up rates while many things are either down for refurb or BEGGING for refurb

I don't even know what to think about the ordeals you are describing. I have only parked at the TTC once and decided never again but I always stay on property, so I have other modes of transportation available to get to MK. In my opinion the best parking lot is HS, followed by AK. I read on this forum somewhere to NOT do ticket transactions at MK, so when I converted DGS 7 day hopper to an AP, I did it at HS instead of MK. Again this was all while I was on property so I had choices easily available. As a day guest I think I would hate visiting the parks. Honestly. I don't think I could stand going to the parks except while I was staying on property.
And reading your description of the length of time spent getting in to the parks and then back to the car in the evening just makes a 30 minute bus ride or boat ride including wait time all the more appealing as an onsite perk.

agreed. we are usually staying at the resort and take the buses. this is our first year with APs and, potentially, many day trips to possibly happen. honestly, if I had known my kids would have wanted to go to EP, I would have gone there first.

Well you have just survived a huge learning curve on what works and what sucks. I spent 2 days of my vacation week at WDW figuring out how far I could push changing things around with the new FP+ deal and now I know...learned the hard way, but I won't forget it anytime soon.

In previous years we activated our APs in Downtown Disney on the way to the resort from the airport. It was quick and easy. With the parking situation as it is this year at DTD I wouldn't go near there either. I agree, HS probably has the best parking lot of all the parks and guest services is right up front.

With the monorail being shutdown during the day, how do guests get from say the CR to the Poly and back? Are they running buses and if so, how often?

i was wondering this myself. It seems they have to rely heavier on buses which I'm sure was totally credited in the room rates :) lol. I didn't see extra buses for them, though. If you wanted to go from CR to poly for ADRs, I'd imagine you'd have to bus to MK then bus hop to the other.

You know I think they are running buses during the day but I can't swear to it. I did not make it to my beloved POLY not even once in 8 days, and I drove to GF the one time I dined over there. When we were at BLT, we used monorail but it was the weekend and they are operational on weekends.

Sorry to hear you didn't get to the Poly. When we stay at the CR we take the monorail to the Poly and GF for breakfast so this interruption would not have affected that anyway. We've never had dinner at either of those hotels.

This was the very first time I did not step foot at the POLY. Twice I've had the great fortune of staying there, but all my other trips I've always dined there or at least shown up for a press pot of coffee and to browse in the gift shop and walk the grounds a bit.
The GF is a must for me, I have to get bath bombs from that Basin store and we always eat a meal at 1900 Park Fare to see the wicked evil family of poor Cinderella...ahh my boyfriend is still teasing DGS7 about who the girl in blue liked better.
