Universe of Energy Sponsorship

Just found out this morning that ExxonMobil is officially pulling their 20+ year sponsorship of the Universe of Energy. This is effective March 2004.

Seems like EPCOT is losing lots of sponsors for it's pavilions (Living Seas, Spaceship Earth, and now ExxonMobil). Disappointing! Hope Disney has other sponsors lined up!

Spaceship Earth's is still debatable. I'm in the process of contacting AT&T to see if they did in fact renew their sponsorship for another year.

Don't forget Wonders of Life!

It's a pity to see the sponsors move out. But hopefully, Disney may be able to make further agreements with other companies.

Wish upon a star! :)

This may sound like a dumb question, but what exactly does Disney get from the sponsors? Is there anything beyond money changing hands in order to cover the cost of running the attraction and rehabs?

And, What do the sponsors get in return? Just the exposure of being the sponsor of the attraction?

In the case of Test Track, I would assume there is a lucrative deal for GM to supply Disney with all its vehicles, no?

Well I guess you'll never see me at an Exxon station again. I for one actually do try to support Disney World attraction sponsors as much as I can. So sorry Exxon but you just lost my business.

But you're not going to commend it for its years?

Wow, you're a hardcore fan! :D

I kinda feel the same about GE and GM...and Kraft and Nestle at the same time!!!

Sega pulled sponsorship to the video game exhibit at Innoventions and disney just has it's own video games.I think they could get nintendo as a new sponsor, then there would be an excuse to have meet and greet with mario, luigi, yoshi, kirby,DK,and pikachu.

Not really. There are closer gas stations to my house so now I won't feel bad about going there. I used to go out of my way to support a Disney sponsor. Not really being a hardcore fan as much as just trying to help. Just little things like that do help I'm sure. Like if I go get a candy bar and I see a Nestle bar available I go with that one. And when I made collect calls (before nationwide cell phone) I always used AT&T.

Now if Alien Encounter were to get a sponsor that would save the current show, I swear I would buy stock!!!

If Disney updated there rides and attractions we wouldn't have this problem. The sponsors are dropping because not many people go to the attractions, and if they do they're not going to ride it. I know these rides can be educational but can't Disney make them somewhat of a thrill??? All I'm saying is that if the attractions were updated and kept up every so often, then Disney would keep all of its Sponsors.

Yes they have high guest count but its just old. If they updated the rides and made them a bit more thrilling to attract even more guests to the ride. Also, look at TT. Think of what it used to be. Honestly tell me which you like better. I know I like TT better. This is what Disney needs to do to all its rides. No, not turn them into a 65 mph thrill but to make them updated and thrilling.

I like the concept and delivery of WOM better than TT... :) You see, I agree that Disney needs to periodically update the attractions it creates. But the update that changed WOM to TT was not something that Disney needs to do to all of its attractions. WOM, as you know, was a quality attraction, one that compounded and expanded on the very basis of Epcot (or, rather EPCOT Center) ;)... It had elaborate and detailed sets, a cast of over one hundred Audio-Animatronics®, and it told a very fascinating story about transportation. Compare this, once again, to TT. In TT, you have sets that are not at all very detailed, no Audio-Animatronics® characters, and you are not really told a story. You are given a "crash course" in the day in the life of a car. Yup. Compared with the human saga of travel and transportation, you get to see and feel what a car does in its infancy! Now, according to you, all attractions should be updated in the same manner as WOM was updated to TT. Following that, SE would be updated into a rollicking ride throgh telcommunication wires... just to see and feel what it is like being a piece of information that is communicated between two parties. Sure, it's thrilling and fun, and you are given and up-close, first-hand look at a method of communication, but it lacks the substance its SE counterpart has. It doesn't tell the saga of mankind's desire to communicate. It focuses in too much on only one thing (in the case I described in the example, telecom wires) that it completely disregards the theme and the purpose of Epcot (or once again should I say, EPCOT Center?)...

This is fine and dandy and all and fits if Epcot sheds its purpose it was created with...... to entertain, inform, and inspire....... in the proposed Gemini transformation. However, to shed such a purpose on the basis of creating a few "thrilling" attractions that lack the substance, quality, and the deliverance that so defined Epcot and etched it in the memories of so many people would be a complete and utter disregard of the strength of the human imagination which has the power to overcome and perform all, including the ability to mix quality, entertainment, information, and inspiration with thrills as well... :)

I think that Test Track is the perfect example of how Disney should work with their sponsors...and keep them around for a while. The pairing of GM and Test Track worked great, because you can use the actual sponsor as a basis for the ride itself (it takes place at the GM testing area). Then, after the ride, it has a giant showroom for the latest vehicle models which is great advertising...all without being an eyesore.

Now with Exxon leaving....who else thinks UoE will get an update?? I see this as a good opertunity for Disney to axe the Dinosaurs, which although are cool, are getting old. Plus, as we move toward the future, we are begining to find more and more sources of energy. Obviously, the Exxon sponsorship ended up having UoE concentrate a great deal on Fossil Fules in this way...thus the Dinosaurs. At least thats my guess. Plus, back then, Disney didn't yet have a "Dinosaur" attraction. It seems like such a great building for another "overwhelming-type" attraction like the current UoE...I mean, they could still keep the same track and everything...just update the Animatronics and have a new show.
