Universal Trip Report

My wife and I headed down to Orlando for a childless trip, which has happened all of once in the past decade, so we were ready! Having posted quite a great deal about the decline of Walt Disney World over the past few months, I was quite ready to evaluate what was going on at Universal Orlando, as we had visited in September and came away very impressed.

We stayed at the Royal Pacific Resort, which is operated by Loews, and were there for four nights. The first impression was quite clear, it's a beautiful resort and we were paying less than what the Disney moderate resorts were being priced for during the same period and there was simply no comparison in quality. To begin with, you obviously have a substantially larger room. Our room was outfitted with a king sized bed and Loews is one of the hotel operators that's been investing heavily in high-end mattresses. The bed was insanely comfortable and the options in the room were numerous. From the Kuerig coffee maker to the flat panel, well stocked bathroom soaps, shampoo, lotion, etc., and resort specific logo items everywhere. The logo items included excellent note cards, things that Disney used to do, but that time has long gone except for the Disney Parks branding.

Housekeeping came each morning between 8:30 and 9:00 AM and they were outstanding. The hotel was very impressive and you received a luxury style resort without the absurdly inflated WDW prices. The walkway to the parks and CityWalk along with the boat service were terrific as well.

When we lived in Orlando, we had both WDW and Universal APs and even though Disney had been on the decline for quite some time, Universal never met their standards even in decline. How it has all changed! From the Cat in the Hat to Harry Potter to Spiderman, we had fully functioning ride effects. We'd visited so many times when living in Orlando that you knew what to expect and what wasn't going to work. Every little thing was running, each and every day. Most notable was how things had even been plussed even in E.T. and fog effects were working all over the property, attraction after attraction. Clean. Period. From the bathrooms to the streets, clean.

Spiderman is terrific with the high definition 3D, I hadn't gone on Despicable Me last time and was really impressed with it. And, of course, Harry Potter is just incredible. The technology, the ride, etc.

From long time Disney first fans, the tide has changed for us that past few years and this trip really solidified the change. We also found the cast members to be extremely friendly and there were surveys all over the place about the cast, service, etc. What I found to be the most interesting part of the survey was the fact that you were actually able to easily express a negative opinion instead of when we would get surveyed by Disney and they would also with the parsing of words essentially never have feedback appear to be negative even if you had a terrible experience.

I can't say enough how Universal has exceeded my expectations in every way since 2009. They have REALLY turned the place around.

And I love that I get 30% off of the resorts with my AP. I reserved a room at Portofino Bay for the night of April 20th/21st. for $177/night. We are seeing the All American Rejects as part of the Mardi Gras concert series on the 20th and Brit Floyd at Hard Rock Live on the 21st.

Did I mention I live 4 miles from UOR?

I love Universal Orlando, and I love having an Annual Pass that actually gives me a lot of benefits that I can use! From FREE Valet Parking to FREE express pass usage after 4pm to a FREE HHN ticket to great food & beverage, merchandise, and resort discounts.

I pay LESS for my Universal Pass than WDW Pass and I get a tremendous amount of value out of it. When it comes time to renew my Universal AP I NEVER question it. However my WDW is constantly debated on it's value/worth/etc

I loved our 1 night at the RPR in December as well as our 1 day in the Universal parks, especially the WWOHP. We got a free upgrade to a Kids Suite, and the room was great (albeit, I must disagree, more expensive than our moderate room at the Caribbean Beach Resort the following nights which included free dining). I also found the staff in the parks extremely friendly. Cat in the hat broke down while we were on it, and every time it tried to start up, it spun around wildly so I was unbelievably nauseous, but other than that, everything was great in the parks. Glad you had a good time.

We had a great AP rate on Royal Pacific that outdid the moderate WDW rates. Actually, we waited two days before the trip to change our reservation and saved $20-30 a night over the prior days published AP rate, so playing the room availability game can really work. BTW-It's always said that if you call the resort directly they then can offer you a better room rate, especially within a few days or day of your first night wanting to stay at the property. We've found with the Loews resorts at Universal that whatever the AP price is at the time online, they are going to give you the same rate on the phone.

The kids suite is what we were thinking getting during our next trip with the kids. How is it setup? Do they do a bunk bed setup for the kids?

:) I understand. We used to stay at hotels all over Orlando when we lived there. One of the few places that you can literally drive down the road and stay at a resort and feel like you're on another part of the planet. Portofino Bay at $177 is terrific. They had the first night rate at $174 for the first day of our trip, but we opted to go with Royal Pacific and at $30 less per night, it was well worth it. My parents stayed at Portofino several years back when we lived down there and it really is an impressive resort as well.

It's funny that when Comcast bought Universal, the expectation was that they were going to unload their interest in it, instead they bought Blackstone out of their part of the ownership, and have developed it into a world class resort. It helps that one of their top execs is a former Walt Disney Company theme park executive that gets it and was part of the Disney team when quality still meant something. Comcast sees a simple equation, invest in the parks, maintain them well, and with high quality, they'll bring in high revenue. It works quite well. Disney needs to get that memo. :)

Now through April 22 they are having AP rates of $144 Royal Pacific to $174 for Portofino Bay with Hard Rock Hotel somewhere between those 2.

Did I mention I love the Loews Resorts. We have only stayed at Portofino Bay. I absolutely LOVE that hotel. I have been wanting to try Royal Pacific, but being 4 miles away I only jump what they make me an offer I can't refuse and $174 a night does it for me.

I've been to the Portofino only once and the Royal Pacific roughly a dozen times. What's that say lol. Portofino is amazing though, we just prefer the RP.

Unfortunately we don't have an AP. We did get the AAA discount which was nice, but still more than CBR at Disney. But I'm not complaining - it was worth it for the night for the advantages we got. The kids suite was really nice. They kids each had their own twin bed in a separate room with its own door; it was decorated like Jurassic Park. The whole room was beautiful. Here are pics of our room and the kids' room:

Just got back from O-town on Saturday and did three days at Universal in between my symposium meeting. I hadn't been there in 21 years so I wasn't sure what to expect. Having been sniffing pixie dust with the kids for so many years, just wanted to see what all the bru-ha-ha was down I-4. I stayed at the Hampton Inn on S. Kirkman (around the corner from Wet-n-Wild), so it was a short 20 min walk down Universal Blvd to get there (not willing to pay the $$$ for parking). Went to Orlando on my own, so I was able to use the single rider line on most everything between Universal and Islands. That made me able to visit and do pretty much everything in both parks in one day, WOW! Quite impressed with the themeing of Islands, especially with HP, Lost Continent, and JP areas. I miss the Hanna Barbera ride (Shrek wasn't as good at that was) and funny to see that Disaster (Earthquake) and ET are the only remaining original rides, that I remember, in the park. Looking forward to going back again in the near future, probably not until HP2 is built.

Well, the DW and I are planning our first onsite stay and visit to USO this May. After visiting DL last February, the wife put her foot down against a back-to-back Disney vacation. She hinted that she was interested in the Harry Potter thingy, so I acquiesced. The last time we visited USO (and my first visit) was in 2006. It was hot, crowded, and most of the rides either didn't work, or shut down with us on board. It is good news that they have done some major improvement to the park(s). We will be staying at the Royal Pacific Hotel. It is pricing out to be considerably higher than a Disney Moderate (wife's favorite is POR), so we hope that the stay will be more enjoyable. I am looking to book room only, and use Undercover Tourist for our 4 day/two park tickets. The meal plan seems to be OK too. The DW says that she could probably find enough to satisfy her and my picky tastes (salads, lighter fare).

Still, it will take an awful lot of magic to overcome the pixie dust I am addicted to......

I am as big a Universal fan as you can get, but I would advise against the Meal Deal. I think the Meal Deal is really only worth it if you are taking several kids and teens.

The one major weakness at UOR is the counter service restaurants that are on the Meal Deal. Some of the counter service places are pretty good like Thunder Falls Terrace or The Three Broomsticks. But Mel's, Circus McGurcus, and Comic Strip Cafe are on the level of Starlight Cafe.

One of the great things about UOR is that the table service restaurants aren't that expensive and are very good. I highly recommend Mythos, Confisco Grille in IOA and Fennigan's in USF. And none of those are really all that expensive. You can get a filet with sides at Mythos for $16.99.

Also I think you will find the food at The Royal Pacific to be excellent. And while I am talking about The Royal Pacific, I think you'll be pleased. It is more along the lines of a Disney Deluxe. And remember that your room key works as an Unlimited Express Pass for all the days you are there including Check-In and Check-Out days. You can check in as early as 7:00am and they will hold your bags until your room is ready.

Plus, he's got CityWalk in walking distance, which has a ton of places to eat.

But yeah, don't get the Meal Deal.

Couldn't agree with you more- we "dumped" or Disney passes a couple of years ago and LOVE staying on property at US! Looking forward to our first trip to RP in June- we normally stay at HRH.

I have tested out Meal Deal numerous times. And I agree 100% with @Disneyhead'71 in that it only is really worth the value if you are going to be inside the parks from open to close, and you have kids with insatiable appetites.

If you are a pickier eater, and you don't need to eat all day, pick one of the higher quality counter services restaurants for your lunch and a nice full service for dinner.

Mythos and Lombards are my two favorite in park full service and both are surprisingly affordable for being inside theme parks (when compared to Disney).

Then you have everything at your hotel and at CityWalk with some really great dining selections there.

I would stay away from the meal deal, even the refillable cups. Unless you have someone who is not riding the rides, what do you do with them, spend money for a locker?? If I want a decent burger at Uni, I'd walk out to City Walk to the BK Bar (but usually I'd hit Moe's).
