Universal Orlando Getting Bigger, Better, Wetter, Wilder

In the days when the Disney water parks were being built, Disney announced, built and opened things at the same pace Universal does now.
I agree that this is probably Disney's biggest problem right now. By the time it opens, it's been disected to death and built up and torn down so bad that so many 'diehards' (note NOT general public) are already disappointed.

That and I truly believe that so many here want Disney to be something it's not. It's not built for the super thrill seeking young man.

The difference between WDW and UNI recently is UNI builds first and announces later closer to opening, Disney puts out pressers saying they will start building stuff 5-7 years from now.

Fixed ;)

This is so true, they've been working on king kong for awhile now, and maybe I'm wrong, but I dont recall it ever being "officially" announced yet.

vs Avatarland that was "officially" announced like way back in 2009/2010, and has barely risen above ground yet.

If you check the Avatar construction thread it's actually gotten pretty far along steel wise.

And look at the difference in opinion on these boards:

Kong (based on basically seeing nothing) is going to be this amazing e-ticket that shows that Uni is miles ahead of the mouse.

Avatar is already underwhelming and cheap.

Insiders on Orlando United have been saying King Kong will be a great ride from what they've heard. Sure part of it will be screens like the tram tour section in Hollywood but we're also getting a big AA of King Kong himself and possibly some giant bugs. I am excited for Avatar too btw, just hoping the rides deliver.

But have we seen anything yet? Have we not noticed that between the two companies, 'insiders' from certain sites seem a whole lot more negative about anything from one park than they are another.

I too am excited for both. I think they will be amazing and I fully expect Avatar to be immersive or I will cry.

Sadly, most of my family is more excited for Frozen at Epcot

Well, technically, there is this.

Either they weren't careful when they took that picture, or it was on purpose. The coaster is definitely not the ride we're getting but the rest does seem suspect.

The main reason people are more bullish on Universal is because of their recent track record. What has Disney done recently? Between 2005 and 2015, a ten year period, what did Disney build? New Fantasyland, Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, new Star Tours and American Idol, that's about it. So six new attractions, one new land, and a redo. And what did they shut down? All of Pleasure Island, half of Hollywood Studios, and let maintenance slip all over the place.

In a *six* year period, between 2008 and 2014, Universal has built two full amazing highest quality Harry Potter lands, two extra E-ticket rides, rethemed a ride *and* a full land into The Simpsons and built two top quality hotels.

Disney have done nothing in recent years to give cause to give them the benefit of the doubt, nothing to show they can still deliver the goods, whereas Universal have exceeded expectations at every opportunity.

Want to know why I care more about the Kong project than Avatar and the one I'll visit next? Going to tell you anyway, hehe. I like the IP better. Avatar is so contrived and politically motivated in my view whereas Kong is just a Big Ape, hot girl, love story. no hidden agenda, just story and one that's redone over and over while the classic is fine as well. Disney has one IP like that, Original Trilogy Star Wars, but it's so far, far away like in another galaxy. I'm still dumbfounded over a mega expensive expansion based on Avatar. I'd rather had seen an Indy relocation and ride as the movies had a feel that seems right at home at AK outside of the Dino Carny section(that my kids love).

Actually Disney built RSR and if I am not mistaken some pretty impressive things in HK in that time....the problem is TDO shows no commitment to allowing that type of creativity and spending to occur in WDW Unless it's on magical bracelets and the company sees fit to allow this.

Disney has four parks and two water parks to show they can 'deliver the goods'. Disney is not building at the same pace as Uni right now because they simply don't have to.

And while the powers that be on here may not like the new fantasy land, the masses seem to be very happy with it. I don't remember being able to walk on to the 'underwhelming' SDMT, an I'm pretty sure there are lengthy waits for the princesses. I won't even get into BOG, another underwhelming failure in sure.

Do you mind if I ask your demographics?

Add Finding Nemo in Epcot and I think the show in AK to 2005-2015 as well. Also if we're throwing Star Tours in there let's not forget the Hall of Presidents update. Would Pirates and Haunted Mansion count too or no?

My guess is this based on recent history. Let's face it - Universal has done a much better job with attractions and lands as of late. When I think of the most recent Disney attractions, I think of the Little Mermaid, which is an insultingly cheap ride. 7DMT effects are well done, but the ride is nothing all that impressive. FLE, in my opinion, was a complete waste. In fact, Disney only suffered from it, with the loss of Snow White's original ride.

No reason to get into what Universal has done. We all know it. They have been light years ahead of Disney technically speaking. I never thought they would beat Disney thematically, but they've done that as well.

As for Avatar, look, it's been said to death. The majority of people simply don't care. The reason why WWOHP is so amazing is because it has legions of loyal fans and is interesting as immersive lands. Honestly, I don't know a single person who has any interest in the Avatar sequels, let alone any land Disney is creating for it. People are going out of their way to see WWOHP. I don't see many going out of their way to see Avatarland. Sure, they'll check it out while at the Animal Kingdom, but taking an entire vacation based around it? I doubt it.

I don't think you can get into the global game, you have to stick local and just compare the Orlando resorts. If you get global then you have to start factoring in Universal's work in Hollywood, Singapore and Osaka, so it just gets ridiculous.

That may be because that the Disney Demo in Otown is so starved for fresh content, that anything, and I mean ANYTHING, they do will be gushed upon like the second coming.
