On our next visit to WDW, the family wants to spend 1 day at Universal. We won't have a car. Also, I know nothing about Universal. Any info I can get would be helpful.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I would get a 2 park pass so you can do universal and Islands of adventure, ,being your only going to be there one day I would make sure you get there upon opening so you can get to the new Harry Potter ride so you're able to ride it it's the Gringotts ride. Men in black is awesome so is Simpson's and the other Harry Potter rides. I would recommend you try butter bear it is amazing!

There's actually a pretty good Universal section of these forums (actually the reason I joined). I don't know how to link to it on this, but you can find it if you click the "Forums" tab at the top. :)

I, personally, LOVE Universal, and think it's worth the trip. Some quick tips off the top of my head:

I definitely agree that a 2 park pass (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure) is your best bet, especially if you're not going with small children. IOA is great for thrill rides and coasters, and US has a lot of rides plus a bunch of really great shows/attractions. It's very easy to go from one park to another, and while, if you're only there one day, you'll probably want to structure your trip a bit, you could easily go back and forth between the two.

Check out the lines when you get there and see if a fast pass is worth it. I've actually gone once where, for a few rides, the wait time was actually LONGER for the fast pass holders! That was an off season March trip a few years ago.

Universal has a bunch of free shuttles that pick up from almost all local hotels and a few other places, definitely should look into that. A taxi from i-drive will run you approx $10 each way if you decide to do that.

As with any other park, get there early and hit the major attractions as soon as you can. I know the Harry Potter area often opens earlier than the rest of the park.

The Univeral forums here will give you lots more info!

Best Wishes, and Enjoy!

I would assume that these shuttles won't pick us up at a Disney hotel. So how would I get there from say Pop Century? Taxi?

Really, consider staying on site for one day and getting a two park two day ticket. (We love the royal pacific hotel...a poly clone of sorts). By staying at a delux on site, you all get free fast passes to most rides (Harry potter is a notable exception). Depending on the season, that could make your room seem like a really good deal. Nothing better than walking in front of all the other guests to the front of a 30 minute line.

There is a lot to see and do. The restaurants are excellent and do not require you to book in advance 180 days, or even 180 minutes. Same goes for the rides. We've decided that the ability to be spontaneous along with the great selection of rides makes universal more appealing to us than disney. Disney is bigger and probably better, but they've botched the customer delivery to the point where we often find it is a chore and no longer as fun.

Love doing the uni trip. Thrusday is always been the quietest day to go.

The two park pass is a must.

From disney you can do a mears shared shuttle. You can call or book online. Very easy. They will pick up at a selected time you choose and pick up others at other disney hotels. Short money like 20 a person round trip or a taxi is around $50 each way and is fast.
You can save money and take a taxi from uni to downtown disney and get a ride back on the disney buses to the hotel. We would make dinner reservations at downtown for the end of the uni day then disney bus back to the hotel.
Also plan on getting there before they open to get tickets as the line can get long. But if your there early you can get to the most popular rides done early and take your time rest of day.

Hard rock is great for lunch. Imo

We have done this before and used a Town Car service (which for our group was really a shuttle van). It was $90 round trip for our group of 8. They picked us up at the front of the resort where the drop off and pick up locations are located. We picked the pick up and return times. We also had the ability to change our return time with an hour notice. So, if we wanted to leave at 9 PM instead of 10 PM we needed to call by 8 PM...an hour before your new selected time. We arrived about an hour before the park opened. They dropped us off in a drop off area that still required us to walk to the main walkway and then over to USIOA (that was our first park). This hour early gave us ample time to get to the main gate, eat our snack and drink we brought with us so we were ready for the day.

What was the name of the service?

We've gone to the ticket and transportation center and grabbed the Lynx - their public bus system. It was $12 round trip for a family of 4 to visit Sea World. We took the bus from the TTC to Sea World in the morning, spent the day at Sea World, and then got off at Downtown Disney for dinner on the way back. It was easy, inexpensive and the drivers help you when you tell them what you're doing. Their bus schedule is online if you want to check it out.

What we did on our last trip was fly into Orlando late in the day, pick up a rental car at the airport, drive to Uni, stay overnight on property so that the next morning we had early access and express passes for everything, then when the parks closed, drove to Disney for the rest of our visit. We kept the rental car because we prefer to have it at Disney too, but if you didn't want it, you could drop it off on property if you rent from Alamo. We usually get some amazing car rental deals through Costco - it might even be the same or less than all those taxis or Mears.

The extra cost of the services concerned us. That's when we spoke with a Cast Member at the TTC who recommended the Lynx public bus system. It was inexpensive and easy and they will help you. We were pleased with a round trip $12 fee for a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 kids). Our expense came with spending the day at Sea World. We were there when it opened at 9. By 3 my kids were begging to go back to the World. They had enough.
