I'd like to imagine if this theme came up back when Disney was capable of making great hotels, the concept for Riviera would have been along these lines:
Woww! Thank you so much for sharing these remarkable images.. the one I kept below is exactly how I picture Disney taking on in that same majesty fashion as Disney's Grand Floridian and Disney's Grande Venezia Resort.

Sadly it looks like current Disney co isn't at all interested in constructing timeless escapes of different times. A person in another thread pointed out that all these Disney resorts at WDW generally isn't about the location but storytelling of a location... I would agree The Polynesian is more a Disney vision of Polynesia, with Riviera it's like a modern view of The South Coast in Europe through a Walt classic tux Walt Disney style...

The theme is French and Italian so there could of been one end of the resort the Italian coast side and the other the French coast side but they didn't do that. I never was into the Gray exterior color..Maybe I'd prefer have it all white idk but I found when you feel the most is at night. Unless they built the resort just like the bottom picture I can't even concept art something unique to storytelling unless I take a real resort architecture like the images you've shown.. now the thing though would having one of those be more or less shocker plumped up next to Carribbean Beach.*

But "we" aren't the target audience for this announcement, this is announcing what we know to the general public.
Right, but again, what surprised me what that what “we” know seemed to add up to less than I would have thought now that they’re showing things all together.

I know this announcement wasn’t intended to rock *my* world - and yet there are a bunch of people like “us” here and on the net whose worlds DO seem to have been rocked by this, and I’m sort of surprised given what the fandom has collectively known all the while.

I am not really sure what you are getting at. This seems to be opening with a pretty good set of attractions.

I think it was the reality of it. Other than some minor things, there were no real showstopper announcements here from what the fandom knew. And, we arguably know even more than what was announced. But, this made it officially "real". So, that part of the mind that was still in "rumor" territory can fully let go. I for one am very excited. The lands aren't huge, but I think we've known that. And, they seem quite detailed and with offerings that are compelling. Celestial Park is also looking like a really wonderful area that Universal Parks have lacked.

Maybe it's the Disney fan, but it feels like Universal is trying to underpromise and overdeliver here - which is the opposite of our friends down the road. Not to say Universal hasn't done the same on other projects. But, the messaging here felt like it came from a theme park operator. It wasn't "cutting edge", "never seen before", etc. Beyond a few buzzwords, the announcement felt like genuine excitement from people who are fans of the parks. I can't say I've felt that about Disney projects where it feels more like corporate artists pitching something for the masses vs. something they actually enjoy themselves. That's part of why I think this feels so great (albeit, maybe more "refreshing" than "unexpected" - to your point).

I guess this D23 will be the one where we learn if Disney's blue sky BS the last few years actually was just part of a holding pattern on public information until they were really sure about what they'd have to respond to or if they've actually not been making any real substantial plans all this time.

One would like to imagine they were ready to go a few different directions based on how big they felt they needed to go but with today's management? 🤷‍♂️

Will we see follow-through on any of the previously announced vapor or will it be something else, entirely... or more blue sky?

When it comes to Disney these days, trust one thing - Shovels moving dirt. Or scaffolding being erected on something already there.

All I can say is, I hope you plan to wash those hands before lunch.

People are required to pick up their dogs' droppings but I work from home so I see where those things pee every day from my window.
I teach high school, so I wash my hands plenty throughout the day; and especially before lunch 😂
