Universal Epic Universe (South Expansion Complex) - Now Open!

My sister is a Disney/Universal Travel Agent and got invited to epic this weekend with 4 other travel agents. 5 people whose job it is to know the parks failed to get a VQ for the ride... crazy.
Ministry didn't even open until 3PM yesterday and I've heard reports that is not uncommon recently. If that pattern is true, it's only available ~6 hours per day and combined with the reduced capacity, not very many are able to ride on any given day. I finally rode it for the first time yesterday on my 3rd visit to the park during various previews.

Going today. The forecast had 50% chance of rain leading up to today and I was hopeful it was typical Florida weather forecast but ho lee poo it is NASTY. Im not sure it has rained this hard in months...so...I guess we will see how Epic is during what looks like a pretty miserable washout of a day.
Sorry you're the guinea pig (at least to me) to see how the rainy day works :(.

Related to this, last week I asked Bruce Laval (the guy that invented FastPass at Disney) if priority queues like FP and Universal Express increase park capacity. He said yes. But it's nuanced.

Priority queues don't change a ride's theoretical hourly capacity (THC). Peter Pan's Flight does 1,000 people/hour no matter how many lines there are. So it can't directly change the park's THC either.

What happens in practice is that guests holding a ride reservation end up going on rides that don't take reservations. So you see Enchanted Tiki Room while you're waiting for Jungle Cruise.

That increases Tiki Room's Operational Hourly Capacity (OHC). And that does change the park's OHC.

I mention this because I think there are relatively few attractions in Epic that don't offer Universal Express:
  • Mine Cart Madness
  • Ministry
  • Dragon Racer's Rally
Mine Cart Madness and Dragon Racer's Rally are really low THC to begin with, and probably can't support Universal Express. Plus the best thing we can hope for with Ministry right now is that it's reliable.

Since there's not a lot of non-Express things to do in the park, it seems like Universal Express isn't going to increase the park's capacity the way it would at other parks.

Also, I am 100% sure they're not opening the park at anything close to 100% capacity. Maybe 50-66%, tops, as a guess. And if I'm wrong I'd bet it's lower, not higher.
Mine Cart Madness has a dedicated Express lane between single rider and the regular queue.

The Mine Cart Express lane is built for the future (smart design), but not currently, or for the foreseeable future, in use. I can however dream of a day when expansion adds Luigi’s Mansion, and a Zelda attraction in the land that allows Mine Cart lines to be reasonable enough to use the Express lane. A guy can dream right???

The express lane had quite a few people coming through when I was there a couple weeks ago. Not sure what it was being used for, if not express pass.

If this was at Disney, everyone will surely have an opinion about it.

When they empty the queue because of a extended closure, people are given a ticket for a one-time Express Pass. Also, if Battle at the Ministry goes down, it converts your VQ to a one time Express Pass that can be used on Mine Cart Madness, I think too.

There are two tiers of rides for the one-time recovery passes. On the 2nd tier passes, it excludes those two, so I'm guessing if one of those goes down, you can use it on the other. What's nice is that the paper ones they give out is they were good for multiple days. We were in line at the end of the day at Mine Cart Madness with a mother & daughter. When they found out we were coming back a 2nd day they gave us 3 paper EPs they had gotten when Stardust Racers went down, that they wouldn't be able to use. I'm pretty sure they also said they had been in the Mine Cart line earlier, got dumped and then took the EP over to Harry Potter. Which is why they were back in the regular line at Mine Cart at the end of the day.

Interesting. It was right after opening and I saw at least 20 individuals move through the express line. Lots of paper passes!

Thought this was interesting. Celestial park has a tiki bar that is heavily based on volcano bay. The interesting thing is that there’s a backstory that explains that the fish that led the waturi princess to volcano bay also led her to celestial park where she decided to open a tiki bar.

Finally got to visit EPIC. And….
I wasn’t entirely impressed with everything. There were some aspects that were fantastic but some that were like 🤷🏾‍♂️. There is a lot of it that I loved. I didn’t get to do as much as I would have liked to but I can see the possibilities. I think if Disney did another land they could do better, but with Iger in place they would do a lot worse. Good job though Universal, if they work out the kinks it will knock Disney down a couple or three.

Epic Universe hours have been updated and added through June 30:

May 22-June 1: 9am-10pm
June 2-15, 17-22, 25-29: 10am-9pm
June 16, 23, 24, 30: 10am-10pm
Interesting, thanks for the update! We’ll be there June 13th, so we lose an hour with just 10am-9pm, but again wishful thinking has me hoping they expect lower crowds those days (most kids still in school). On the positive side, we don’t have to get up as early for early entry, which I like a lot. It also appears they’re listening to the public about having the park open more at night!

Who cares. Do ever have anything nice to say about Epic.
That's definitely something which needs management attention. This is a top tier theme park destination, not some random nobody's internet blog.

Disney, Universal, even Six Flags. No excuse for this in final form intended for public eye, and I'm sure will be corrected in little time.

I would really like to see the behind the scenes on how these signs are created. They MUST be created on a computer, whatever system creates this, there is no spell check??

Even if there isn't all text should be fed into something that does spell check, exported from that into what ever makes this.
