Universal Epic Universe (South Expansion Complex) - Now Open!

No Idea how they do this or how accurate it is... but Thrill data seems to think EPIC is running about 44% capacity today.

https://www.thrill-data.com/epic-universe-capacity/

At 11am that gives us:
180: Mario Kart
165: HPBATB
120: Minekart
85: Toothless
75: Yoshi/Fyre Drill/ CotWW

This is horrendous. This is a major reason why park reviews are plummeting.

"Internet reviews are not real life" = this is true in the sense that people are more likely to post reviews about negative experiences than positive ones.

But also consider that real life average people are not theme park lovers, workers, etc. Epic got glowing reviews during previews because it was so many theme park adjacent people in a park where capacity was being limited.

I have nothing against a Wicked expansion, but my barber assures me it's going to be LOTR.

My complaint is also one of ride story pacing. A perennial Universal weakness.
Universal apparently needs all rides to have a thrill factor at all times… even slow moving dark rides… let’s bring on the thrill… really chaos in disguise…. As someone who grew up on rides like Haunted Mansion and Pirates….my biggest jaw dropping theme park moments are those when I can slow down and marvel at their achievements

There is already a Wicked display and gift shop in Universal Studios. Guest interest, measured by gift shop sales, could be a factor.

Wicked could work as a show or dark ride. It could even work as a FJ type of ride

Yes, they are Universal Resort busses, but they are not at a "gas" station. They are/were brand new electric busses. They were at the new electric bus charging station Universal built near Terra Luna off Universal Blvd. Apparently, while charging, the lithium batteries on one of the busses overheated and caught fire. The 2nd bus is just collateral damage.

I wonder what kind of staying power this would have, though.

Wicked is obviously insanely popular with the subset of society that's into Broadway musicals and the first movie had enough production value and star power behind it to overcome the "I don't want to see a musical" crowd to some extent but after the second movie, then what?

Are they planing to turn this into a franchise with spinoffs and stuff after? (honest question - I have no idea)

If not, will this be something that has staying power over the next decade or two in the larger pop culture?

If not, I could see them doing an elaborate show in a theater that can be repurposed with another show down the line but I have a hard time imagining Universal would invest in a ride, much less a whole land to this particular IP.

My take is that a great attraction is a great attraction that shouldn't require familiarity with the source material to enjoy and as FOP shows, the IP doesn't even have to matter since it opened at a time when many people didn't remember the first movie or hadn't even seen it and still loved the attraction/land but the powers that be in Orlando both for Uni and Disney don't seem to agree with me, there. 🤷‍♂️

You know what's funny?

It is already a part of pop culture...that is baked in. Wicked opened on Broadway in 2003. It can definitely support an attraction if they continue down the IP route. Can it support its own land/portal? I dunno...Isle of Berk can...

Sounds like the same thought after Avatar made so much money...

Wicked is ultimately part of the Oz universe, which despite all sorts of grand plans over the years has never quite stuck the landing in terms of themed entertainment. It’s one of those properties that has some wild, but vaguely defined, places and the real focus and source of uniqueness is the characters. Oz is also a property Universal previously took a swing at and has removed. Universal Studios Japan had an Oz land including a shortened version of Wicked as a stage show.

I think they could make An oz or shiz university land work. They might have to flesh them out and invent some restaurants and stores but that’s not a deal breaker. Wizarding Paris does it.

That's the primary reason why EVs aren't allowed in a lot of parking structures. In order to get the energy density required for range, they currently utilize materials that cant really be extinguished. You can flood them with water or encase them with foam after they ignite to reduce their spread, but you cant stop the chemical reaction.

I think Oz/Wicked may end up as a land in the new UK park. Possibly where the big green coaster is in the concept art. And they can't use Potter to sell $$$ interactive wands, so...
