Is it necessary to make advanced reservations for dining in Universal, like Disneyworld? What are the best places to eat?

Not likely necessary but it could not hurt. It also depends on when you are going...after Potter opens it will most likely be and summers are often very crowded.

The best resturants in my opinion are Mythos, nice atmosphere and good meals/service, and The Kitchen at the hard rock, especially for the breakfast buffet. Best breakfast ever.

Heading for the great escape.
We find that at weekends Maragritaville is popular and that it may be necessary to make a ressy in the morning.

We had to have a ressy for the Palm too but that was a weekend.

Agree about Kitchen breakfasts.

We always eat at Mythos when we go. We make a ressie in the a.m. as soon as we get there at one of the reservation kiosks. There is one in IOA heading towards Hulk on your right side. I think I may have seen one in City walk somewhere too.
Margaritaville has great food- but yes they can be very busy if you don't have a ressie. We also ate at Bubba Gumps last time we were there. It was alright- out of the 3 I mentioned this was our least favorite.

Universal doesn't have the same ADR-type system as WDW. From what I've heard, you're generally safe making reservations at the kiosks in the morning on your way into the parks.

I'll find out for sure myself in August.

From someone who normally visits early August this has been our experience. Making a morning ressie stops the worry about playing table russian roulette at night.

You can also call and get reservations at SOME, not all, but SOME of the City Walk restaurants in advance. I know Emeril's, Margaritaville, and Hard Rock do this.

I say Mytho's for in park eating fun and Margaritaville for City Walk. Nothing like sitting on the porch of Margaritaville with a few drinks in hand listening to quality music knowing a Cheeseburger in Paradise is on its way!

If you do have to "Slam and Jam" for lunch or dinner, there's always the BK Whopper Bar, Moe's, and Panda Express at City Walk.

The parks only have a few tableservice places put together. While this might seem like it would just make them busier, it doesn't seem like many people want to eat there. Citywalk is busier, but still manageable most of the time. Like the previous posters said, just make reservations in the morning, and you should be fine. Mythos is by far the best tableservice restaurant in either park -- wonderful architecture and views, with a pretty decent food selection.

Now, a word of warning.. the counterservice places have very limited menus and the food itself has greatly suffered in quality just recently. Richter Burger, as someone previously mentioned, used to be great, but now everything has a distinctly cheap, dusty taste -- yet the same prices. :dazzle: No place is spared from cheap, low-quality ingredients and very repetitive, limited menus. This is coming from someone who in fact really enjoys WDW quickservice, which has had its share of haters. :)

Citywalk, on the other hand, is excellent -- I recommend having a snack or two at the parks, and having a dinner after the parks close at Citywalk. Pastamore is my favorite. The hotels also have great restaurants, I hear, but no experience with those. Have fun!

When I was there in June we made reservations for each night, but most of the places we didn't need one! But for places like the Hard Rock Cafe we did!! I would just make the reservations just in case!:)
