Unimpressed with Animal Kingdom

I've gone on the Safari many times with very few animals present. It's just the luck of the draw which is why I personally DISLIKE the Safari. It's an attraction based on hopes and maybes. I don't know if the animals were just hot and needing shade, sleepy or just knew our group was coming and decided against "putting on a show" But they're fickle little bastards with minds of their own. Expecting the safari to wow park guests every time, every day, every hour is not an easy feat, which is why the current Safari needs work. (and possibly more animals.)

There are animals at DAK. But it's Nahtazu! You sometimes have to seek them out. Which for my money, is honestly not worth it. What can I say? Maybe I'm lazy and don't want to walk the trails, etc. We go to DAK for the attractions. The animals are just a nice bonus.

Still a half-day park as far as I'm concerned. Your results may vary.
But I think (hope) we can all agree that DAK could use more rides and animals.

I know this isn't a ride or a show or anything ..but how cool would it be if they could come up with some sort of sea monster to roam that empty river. I am dead serious, a sort of animatronic Loch Ness, every hour or 2 maybe it does a little show(emerges, breaths fire, roars...)in the area they used to stage their night time show. It would be totally unique. They could set up tracks down there. It's late and I may have sat in the hot tub too long so forgive me if this one is too out there!

It'd certainly be cool, especially if they had the Beastly Kingdom portion of the park added! Ah well...maybe one day! 😉

No aversion to walking myself, but regarding the train, I, too, wish it went around the park, but not because it saves steps.

My grandson and I are railfans, and as long as the MK railroad is down, that short train ride at AK is just barely enough to scratch that itch. A longer ride would be MUCH better.....that is, until the MK Railroad is up and running again. ;-)

Regards! Michaelson
WDW needs more lovers of steam trains and ships! Ultimately we are the ones the parks were built for. (That's a statement of historical fact! Ask Walt!)

MK RR track length is 1.5miles
DAK RR track length is 1.2miles

Ask to stay on or ride again, so you can complete the loop. There isn't much difference in overal loop track length.

Bonus.
Just to convert the heathens who don't love DAK - yet, here's my picture of the Harambe station as seem from the track. It's an underwhelming ride, but a gorgeous environment. Which, I guess, could be applied to all of DAK. ;)

This appears to be a simple case of not doing adequate research before visiting the park. There are so many "off the path" experiences that are easy to overlook on your first visit. I know that the animals are more active in the morning and early evening. I wholeheartedly disagree with your point of view that its a waste of money (that title goes to Epcot). I hope you make an effort to visit the park again, with a fresh set of eyes. I had a similar experience when I visited Universal for the first time, but upon a second visit, I quite enjoyed it. DAK truly is the greatest theme park in North America.

If I were CEO I'd fast track you to head imagineer on that idea alone.

That approx $25 million would be the best spent attraction money on property.

One of the coolest things at Uni is the fire breathing dragon in Diagon Alley and that doesn't even move. Everyone stops in their tracks to watch that thing. This monster at AK would be an attraction with no FP, no line but it would make that park a must visit every vacation ( which it is already for me).

As the saying goes to each his own.

A co-worker of mine was going for the 1st time to Disney. Another co-worker told him skip AK as she thought it was a waste of time. I told him don't and gave him some hints. He came back and said AK was his families favorite park. (He had no nostalgia for MK.)

I don't know if I would say AK is my FAVORITE since I love all the parks for different reasons. We loved AK even before Avatar which we love. My favorite show at ALL of Disney is Lion King which isn't running right now. (not including night time fireworks, etc). Last trip we saw Lion King twice. We park hop so the 2 shows were not in the same day. I cannot image a trip to Disney World without going to AK.

We always do the animal walks which is a nice break from the rides. It isn't the best zoo but it is nice.

Food - Yak & Yeti and the counter that serves their food are both good. We haven't made it to other sit down places as we usually go over the to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and eat dinner when we go to the Animal Kingdom Park. LOVE all 3 restaurants there.

As far as the animals go they are not forced to do anything that they do not want to do. If you go during the day when it is hot outside most of the animals will be in a shady place, sometimes not in view. If you go early to see the animals when it is cooler out you might have a better chance of seeing them.

Did you go on the safari ride? Other than that what did you expect...animals randomly roaming around the park, lol? There have been times I’ve seen more animals than others on the safari and in the parks, like the monkeys. Sometimes they’re super active and/or vocal, other times not. But I do enjoy seeing them but it I really wanted to see animals in less than something that somewhat resembles their own natural habitat I’d go to a regular zoo. IMO the park is done well with the design and theming. It’s not actually that hard to get the layout plus they do have signs. It took a bit to remember exactly where Pandora was but again, I just used the signage. Now that River of Light is gone it is back to a one day park though. But if you think EE is boring I know I cannot reason with you. 😆

You beat me too it. I was going to expand on your idea and specifically reference the fire breathing gargoyle-like dragon perched atop of Diagon as well as the Disney Sea erupting volcano with fire effects....only the coolest specific man made thing I have ever seen.

Disneyland Paris has a 'live' dragon in the castle.......Crazy cool to check out. It's these features that breathe life into the parks.

No lines and no FP but yet would offer world class entertainment with relatively little cost. The mileage yielded from such a betterment would please even the most stingy suit. Yes, that is why I'd position you as lead imagineer.

On page 6 of this very rigorous academic debate I'm going to add my two cents. For my spouse who did not grow up with anything Disney (communist country and all) AK is his favorite because he doesn't have to "know" anything. I think he feels left out when the kids and I squeal with delight at a character or a ride at MK. AK is animals, nature, and a section that is based on a major international hit movie (that I didn't bother to see till 2019). He doesn't have to "know" Disney. For a major Disney fan, the park may not hit all the right buttons but for outside visitors who "must" visit Disney it's cool (in more ways than one-thanks trees and shade coverings), neat , and the one they talk about. As far as animals, no, it's not the Bronx Zoo but but that's why we go to zoos.

If OP doesn't like it, he doesn't like it. Maybe it's not for him.

Signed,
Someone still bitter about no Beastly Lands

Thank you, I am truly flattered. You are right, these are the kind of things that do make a park come alive. Rides are great, but are they great when you have to be super fast on your phone or you won't even get a chance to ride it? And what do people love most in a park? Those spontaneous moments of wonder. Just imagine you are walking over a bridge when someone gasps and says look in the water and you look down and see something slither just beneath the surface, kids and adults alike would gasp, that fun mix of fear and discovery. Then later it emerges in the lagoon, spouting fire or water, making noise. Just awesome. You could have it run the track in the river, maybe sometimes just it's back or head breaking the surface for a moment, then enter a "cave" at the lagoon, where the track monster sits and the lagoon one, which is more elaborate is put out on an underwater platform or something. Anyway we can dream! What's cool is all they would need to do is drain the river to work on the tracks, no rides or lands would be effected and they don't have to expand the park at all to do it.

Stop, just stop I'm getting too hot and bothered reading any more

Something like that would be the absolute highlight on property; nothing would be anywhere close to it.

And yes it would be imperative to keep the creature mysterious ....it should only reveal itself just enough to keeping you guessing as to its full size, shape and disposition and appear at irregular time intervals......no scheduled entertainment

As Shania Twain once said...That don't impress me much...

I was very disappointed in AK and the over all time I spent at the park. I am glad it took me 22 years to get here because honestly, it was not at all what I expected. There were not many animals, and not many rides. While Avatar was my favorite land, even the river ride was boring. The food was terrible! Not sure if it was because of covid changes or what but it was bad.

The good's were it was a beautiful park, a lot to visually see, but man, WHERE, ARE, THE, ANIMALS? Like, no where to be found.

I would say its a great park to walk around it and have a nice stroll, but as far as everything else, very boring and not worth the price...

Sorry to be a Debbie downer, but has anyone else had this similar experience? I've been to Disney like 15+ times...
Likely a troll post with questions like, "Where are the animals?" (there are literally like 2,000) but I'll indulge it briefly.

"The food was terrible." And where did you eat? Much of the food there would absolutely be higher quality than the food you're eating on a daily basis at home.

There are tons of animals there. It's not a zoo with cages. You have to walk on the trails. You have to stop and look around. Again, animals are all over the place and not just giraffes and elephants.

Questioning your entire premise if you've been to Disney 15+ times but this is your first trip to AK. Anyway, nice parody post.

It's far too large for what it offers.

The train should have circled the entire property and joined each area for convenience, becoming a true DAKRR like the WDWRR. Instead, it's a train in a far corner of the property to...a petting zoo.

The Tree of Life...who cares.

The pork sandwich was pretty good...how do I sign up for the paid backstage tour that shows how the meat was acquired?

Paper straws...nope. BYOS.

Lions, tigers, bears...oh my.

Endless sidewalks that seem like they all end up back...somewhere.

Wait...didn't we pass that tree already?

Where the...blank...are we?

Busch Gardens is a far better zoo with a vast number of rides and transportation options. Last time I checked, they even still had the remote-control boats which were long yanked out of MK Adventureland because...
There is a certain level
What's wrong with golf courses?

I don't generally need to pay a hundred bucks a head to go on a canopied nature walk.

It's not that I "wasn't paying close attention"...It's that I'm on vacation and not at a theme park as a paying customer to do work, which is what Disney apparently themed DAK for. If I wanted to pay someone a hundred bucks for the privilege of doing my own work, I'd hire a...oh, nevermind.

Either way, both have a giant bush in the center.
I can teach it to you but I can’t understand it for you. Maybe your local county fair is more your pace.
