UGH! Two breakdowns in one day at MK!

Just got home from MK, fairly interesting day at the World. Crowds were light, which was very nice. We never waited longer than 20 minutes for anything. Overall we had a good time, but there were a couple of issues.

First was the 15 minute breakdown on HM. I like Grim Grinning Ghosts as much as anyone, but 15 minutes of the same 30 second song gets fairly old. I was at least hoping for a lights on evacuation, but alas, it was not meant to be. They finally got us going again. On the plus side, the new queue is pretty cool as are the new hitchhiking ghosts effects.

Trouble seemed to follow us to POtC. The inoperative Davey Jones mist screen foreshadowed what was to come, as we had another 10-15 minute shutdown. A CM made a few announcements about a "power down" and "pump restart". As we were exiting I overheard two CM's talking about some sort of bad sensor.

SM also went down at least once. When we went to get FPs, a CM was turning folks away due to it being out of service "for an unknown length of time". So I did what any good fanboi would do, ran to TTA! Of course they started letting folks into SM almost as soon as we boarded TTA. I'm still on the fence in regards to the new TTA narration. There are certain things I like, and other that I don't. Maybe I'll warm to it over time.

Sounds like George was following you guys around.

:ROFLOL: Seriously that is the best story on WDW I've ever heard...

I've never been on The Haunted Mansion without it stopping except one time... I guess it's for the people having trouble getting on, like wheelchairers and older people...

Disney should refurbish the omnimover part so that when each part turns it's not -turn, stop turn, stop turn- and it would just be a nice smooth -tuuuurrrnnn-

And Space Mountain has a habit of breaking down often... aaand not to mention that TTA People Mover is usually always stopping and breaking down!! You mean to tell me you were on it without it stopping.. at least ONCE?

I believe that has actually recently happened! Someone will probably correct me, but I think that there is an "offstage" area where an "offstage" doom buggy is stopped and can allow for those needing assistance can get on and then it is just merged into the actual omnimover system. Not entirely sure on the validity, but I am pretty sure I have at least a few facts straight.

You're describing a patent that Disney filed a few months ago for off-line loading of an Omnimover vehicle.

It was rumored/guessed that it might be what was going on behind the curtains near the unload area at the Mansion, but that was proved wrong. (In reality, I guess they were just widening the bypass hallway for wheelchairs and scooters to use it)

As for Space Mountain, you can almost always blame slow people at the Unload platform. If rockets aren't cleared constantly, it's very easy for rockets to back up beyond the available hold points before Unload, and cause a cascade shut-down of that side of the attraction. But the good news is that one of the major parts of the recent refurb was an upgrade to the ride system that allows for much faster restarts from a cascade. What used to take 20+ minutes can often be now done in about 5.

Knowing nothing really technical about the ride's timings I'm confused by the statement about that it needs to be reset.

If a train is late leaving the station and they are worried about a back log, cant they just send the next rocket almost immediately (once the train in front is past the first brake block) and keep the system running? Or are the trains running so tight this doesnt work.

Its more the other way around. If someone can't get out of their rocket fast enough, the vehicles pile up behind them. And since its a coaster there are zones will following vehicles will stop to ensure they don't crash into the ones in front of them. And so as the unload fills up, then the zone before the unload fills up, and then the one before that, etc, etc, etc. Then the unload needs to be completely cleared before they can release the vehicles in the zone behind that, which needs to completely clear before the ones behind it can move, etc, etc. So they can't send any more cars until they clear all the stuck ones.

At least so goes my understanding of coasters.

You are using the term breakdown incorrectly. It's not a breakdown, it's a stoppage for a guest situation.

We got stuck in the graveyard scene for about 20 minutes. The first 10 minutes the music was one and it was completely annoying after 4 minutes. When they finally turned the music off, boy did it get creepy.

I honestly enjoy the occasional breakdown. We once brokedown a few boats shy of the final drop on Splash Mountain. We were walked out. I thought it was pretty cool, walking through to the backdoor and then being lead around to the front. The toughest ride to be broken down on is Small World. The sound does not stop.

USUALLY when an attraction breaks down, it is the fault of a guest doing something stupid. People always think it has to do with with a lack of maintenance but its usually Disney being extra safe. Like if a hat flies off on space, the ride usually has to estop for an hour. If guests would listen, itd happen less.
