Trip Report Two Turkeys at WDW & Merrytime Disney Cruise November 2016

Hello! My husband and I (two turkeys) just got back from WDW & a Merrytime Disney Cruise and I thought I would share our adventures. All of you are welcome to read but I'm going to tag a few of you that I know have followed along before. (Or at least those I can remember.) I look forward to reading your reactions!

I have shared a few of our other adventures and if you are interested here are some links:

Introduction:
Who: Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad) We are the two turkeys.
Magic Band personalization: Me: Gobble '16 and Brad Stuffing, in honor of Thanksgiving
When: November 22-November 28
Where did we stay: All Star Sports

Backstory We have wanted to do a Christmas themed cruise for awhile, and in May of 2014 I booked us on a 3 night cruise in hopes that it would match up with my school's calendar. Luckily it it did. I figured I might have to take a personal day (which I did), and we would add in some time at WDW.

The Report
Tuesday November 22:
I teach in a rural northern Wisconsin school so school for our students is off the whole week of Thanksgiving, but we have teacher inservice Monday and Tuesday. In our district we are not supposed to take off inservice days. So being the rule follower that I am yet still wanting to get maximize my WDW time I book (months ahead of time) a flight leaving at 7:10pm on Tuesday night. I figure I am golden, I don't have to break the work rules, and I'll still get to Disney on Tuesday night giving me 2 full WDW days before the cruise. Leaving on a 7pm will be perfect for traveling from work to the airport and giving me the time cushion I like to give myself at the airport. Well, Delta airlines had other plans.

About 1 1/2 month before our flight, I get an email from Delta saying they cancelled my 7pm flight and moved me to a 5pm!!!:jawdrop::mad: This was not good! If I left work for the airport without asking to leave early I would make it to the airport (if things went perfectly) when my plane would be boarding! So long story short I went and talked to my boss, fully prepared to take unpaid time and all that. And luckily he was very understanding and he said he knew that I would easily make up the time/work since I usually come in to work about 1-1 1/2 early every day anyway, and I would not have to take unpaid or personal time. (which was good because I had already designated my other personal day for a WDW in March of 2017). So now the only thing I had to worry about was weather & traffic getting to the airport.

Well, wouldn't you know it, but the weather decided that there would be a wintry mix with mostly freezing rain starting at noon the day we flew out! :jawdrop::mad: Ok, so now I'm already "breaking" the rule of leaving early, but now the roads would be treacherous. And I HATE driving in bad weather. It all made this type A girl very anxious. So my boss said I could leave even a little earlier. Luckily the weather people were somewhat wrong and it was mostly rain on the way, and stayed mostly rain. But were were at the airport now about 3 1/2 hours early. But we were there and our plane was on time. It really was time to relax now.

Minneapolis has two terminal buildings and we were flying out of the big terminal and flying back to the smaller one (with the cheaper parking). So we parked at the smaller terminal and took the light rail train to the bigger one. It is a bit of a hassle but the train came shortly after we got the to platform and away we went.

IMG_3408.JPG

We are on time for take off. The plane did have to go through de-icing, as did other planes. So we were 20 minutes late in take off because of waiting for de-icing, but we only landed about 5-10 minutes late.
IMG_3409.JPG

The plane is here, what you can't see to well in the pictures is the sleety-rain. It made me a little nervous, but the trucks were constantly spraying de-icer on the runways.
IMG_3410.JPG

We landed, YAY! And since we planned to drive to the cruise port we rented a car. This was our sweet ride. As usually hubby, tried to pick up the most beat up and scratched one in the lot. His theory is that then the rental car company can't prove the scratches are from us.
IMG_3416.JPG

It was dark then as we drove under the sign so my picture didn't turn out clear. I got this blurr, but in a way it is kind of trippy and cool with the blur.
wdw sign.JPG

We were super hungry and we thought about going to Trader Sam's or Disney Springs for something but it was a little after 11:30 pm and figured we wouldn't have much time. So we parked at the All-Star Sports and went into the food court. We probably should have went to the McDonald's. We got chicken tenders and fries and they were definitely end of the night servings (a little cold and stale). But it was sustenance and then we could go right to our room.
IMG_3423.JPG

A couple pictures of the decorations at the Sports. They weren't anything spectacular like a gingerbread house, but I liked them.
IMG_3425.JPG

IMG_3426.JPG

Our room was really close to the main building in the Touchdown section. So we were both happy. In June we had requested to be near transport at the Music and got stuck in the Broadway section which was a bit of a hike. So we unpacked and I put up a few Christmas decorations to spirit up the room.
IMG_3433.JPG

IMG_3435.JPG

So after unpacking we went to bed. We were planning to maximize our WDW with early mornings and late nights. We figured we could relax on the cruise.

Cruise day two: Nassau port day or to us our day at "sea" since we weren't getting off the ship here.

We had ordered morning room service, and thought we would be okay when it arrived. We weren't but that was a wake up call I could get used to!
IMG_4967.JPG

So I had my coffee out the veranda and we ate our doughnut and crossiants out here too. Perfect way to start the day. I also thought it was cool to see the water spout on the sea.
IMG_4968.JPG

IMG_4972.JPG

We went down to real breakfast and ate at Cabana's. I was shocked when Brad said he wanted to eat out on the outside area. He never wants to do that, must be the sea air!

After breakfast we wandered up to the top adult deck to relax. We had some really comfortable loungers by satellite falls. Now here is my pet peeve, while we were up there a bunch of parents brought their kids into the area. I didn't mind so much when they stood at the railing, it was at the front of the ship, but it really bothered me when parents and their kids sat on the loungers nearby. They didn't use the Falls pool though. It still bugged me because it was supposed to be adults only, and there were signs. I mean I couldn't go into their kids club any longer. This was really the only time it happened though without cast members kicking the kids out. The parents should have been more respectful of the area and the rules.

We watched the ship dock and it was really cool that they backed into the dock.

A lighthouse, pretty cool!
IMG_4993.JPG

Oh yeah, a girl could get used to this!
IMG_4997.JPG

The bathroom nearby, I love the arrangement of the mirrors.
IMG_4998.JPG

Nassau. We went into town last time and went to a fort. It was fine, but with only a 3 night cruise we wanted to maximize what the ship had to offer.

Time for our brunch at Palo. It was really good. We ate a lot of food, and a lot of good food. It was worth doing. I don't think we will go on every cruise. But we certainly got our money's worth!

He also got a fritatta
IMG_5023.JPG

veal saltiboca
IMG_5024.JPG

sausage flatbread. The sausage was good, but honestly it was one of the biggest disappointments. Besides the type of sausage it wasn't any different than the pizza at Cabanas. It was the same sauce and crust, and the crust isn't that great.
IMG_5025.JPG

The appetizer buffet area. I think it is right below the kid's club, because when I was in the room, there was a pounding on the ceiling that sounded like people running. I thought it was kind of funny to be in a fancy restaurant and to hear the pounding of feet above me as I was picking out my fancy food. I didn't hear it at our table though.
IMG_5028.JPG

IMG_5030.JPG

These pieces of feta wrapped in eggplant were one of the best things I ate there, they were addicting.
IMG_5039.JPG

And I had never had caviar before, and I thought...why not. I wouldn't say I disliked it or liked it. It didn't have much flavor, but had a odd texture. But now I can say I've had it.
IMG_5040.JPG

lasagna, this was really good

A look at the dessert table.
IMG_5042.JPG

I'm going to make friends with one of these little guys later!

IMG_5044.JPG

The view from our table. The other ship was okay I guess, but the Dream is so much prettier. I like the classic design.

Brad's fillet, I thought the stuff on top was mashed potatoes. I felt silly when he said it was flavored butter!

Just a couple of shots while leaving Palo. The glass chandelier sculpture was pretty amazing. Also another bathroom shot, as the bathrooms were fancy schmancy.

I love the pictures!! The cruise ship is gorgeous. And I really like how you got those distance shots of the Space Center. I went there about 25 years ago--it was great. But anyway, back to your trip--what a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season on a "Merrytime" cruise ship! :joyfull:

I thought the stockings hanging up were so cute and festive. Also, I like your t-shirt you bought there.

But you must play mini-golf the next time you cruise--no more excuses--put it right at the top of your "to do" list! :p
second this.. The Disney ships are absolutely stunning.. so much details.. the theater.. everything!
nice photos too!

Oh my, oh my!!! Keep those awesome pictures coming!! The food . . . the shows . . . the costumes . . . the decorations. Wow, just wow!!

Also, I really like how you took that photo of the picture on the wall, showing the ship's captain, and his bio. You're the first person to do that on a cruise TR here in this forum (that I know of, anyway). What a nice touch to share that with all of us. We tend to get to caught up in all the fun, food, etc., but this is a serious job he has (along with his crew) to safely navigate that huge vessel. I am very impressed with his expertise. Let's all raise our glasses, and have a New Year's Day toast to Henry F. Andersson, Captain!! :)

The fact that Disney ships are so beautiful is part of my reluctance to try another cruise line. I enjoyed your pictures of the other cruise line you took, but that still didn't convince me. Price eventually will convince me if I book the Alaska cruise I'm thinking about for 2018.

Then we headed up to the adults deck to relax on a lounger. Brad had a scheduled time for the sports simulator to do golf, but that wasn't for about 40 minutes. The loungers here very relaxing and we had a shady spot. I fell asleep and was having a glorious nap, when Brad woke me up to tell me he was leaving for the sports simulator. I was pretty grumpy about being woken up. He said he didn't want me to wake up and wonder where he went. What?! I knew he was going to the simulator, I wouldn't have wondered at all! I tried to go back to my nap but it didn't work. So I relaxed and read a magazine until it was time for the Deck the Deck holiday party.
IMG_5136.JPG

These were the loungers next to me during my nap. So comfy!

On my way to the Deck the Deck party I saw these little rascals.

The little party was cute. It was the characters preparing/decorating the deck for Christmas.

Looking up at the aquaduck. This was sure fun to ride, the first part is water coaster and the second half is slow like a lazy river.

Someone was able to join me after his golfing time on the sports simulator. He said he liked the simulator but said it was difficult.

After the part we headed to Bingo, and had to walk through Cabanas. I like the murals they have in Cabanas, the buffet area.
IMG_5222.JPG

They have sandcastle murals representing all the Disney parks castles. (Not Shanghai's though, perhaps they will put that on the new ships)
IMG_5228.JPG

IMG_5230.JPG

We got to Bingo and I got beverages and Brad got the boards. We weren't winners but we had a fun time. They make it really entertaining. We like that they call the machine Betty, and when the numbers aren't what we want we call out "Shake it up Betty!"

As the sun set and we left Nassau, hubby and I decided to skip the evening show and we spent some time swimming in the adult pool areas and in the hot tub. (No pictures of us in swimsuits, so thank your lucky stars!)

IMG_5248.JPG

IMG_5251.JPG

IMG_5262.JPG

The pool area was deserted, it was like our private pool.
IMG_5265.JPG

Then we got ready for dinner. It was pirate night tonight! Don't we look like dangerous pirates?
IMG_5267.JPG
IMG_5270.JPG

We also stopped in one of the stores again. I was really tempted by these nutcrackers. I collect nutcrackers, but in the end I passed and hoped Santa would bring one. Spoiler alert....Santa didn't bring one. Perhaps the birthday genie will but that is months away.

Time for dinner. Last time we cruised there was a special menu for Pirate Night, but I guess since we were just on a 3 night cruise it was just the regular menu. Brad was a little sad because he had enjoyed the ribs on Pirate Night, but don't worry we still found plenty to enjoy. @MinnieM123 , I hope you enjoy the food photos!

IMG_5301.JPG

IMG_5302.JPG

Brad got duck confit.
IMG_5303.JPG
.
French onion soup for me. I'm very picky on my onion soups and this passed my picky test.
IMG_5304.JPG

I think we shared the beef.
IMG_5305.JPG

Brad got some sort of fish.

And I got crispy duck

The show was fun, and the fireworks were pretty spectacular. Especially since they were being shot off of a cruise ship. I thought the guy playing Jack Sparrow did a pretty good job too. After the show we wandered around a bit and then decided just to hang out in the room and on the veranda.
