Two questions about Nassau

Hi all,

Have my first Disney cruise coming up soon and just trying to work out what to do.

There is a wealth of information here but I've got two questions that I have not found any answers to...

I know there are plenty of excursions that can be booked for the day in Nassau but I'm more interested in doing my own thing !!

Firstly please can someone confirm that the ship docks in the main port at Prince George Wharf?

Also once ashore, can you re-board any time you like or do you have to wait until a certain time before being allowed back on to the ship?

I don't know the name of the wharf, but it is the main one and the ships always park there.
You can get back on the ship at any point you like. I've left the ship and got back on 45 minutes later after I picked up some rum cake.

Yes to Prince George Wharf, and yes you can get on and off as your please! We got off, explored a bit, and actually ended up back on the ship for lunch, then back out again! Just make sure you give yourself enough time to make all aboard! :)

We did our own thing too - and even if you didn't prebook anything, there's plenty of opportunities to take something up when you're on land. Have fun!

If you do go exploring i recommend heading down by Twin brothers or Eddie's fish fry to the West... Awesome local seafood, straight off the boat, tons of fresh conch, and CHEAP! I used to love eating there!

One caution about going out on your own. If you just want a walk about or if you remain in areas of easy taxi procurement fine. If you book a tour taking a private car or bus on your own off the ship be aware if the vehicle breaks down, or simply is late getting you back to the ship from a remote area at the appointed time the ship will not wait for you. I have been aboard several ships that have left passengers behind. You would then be on your own to re-board the ship at the next port or return home all at your expense.

If you do want to tour a remote area book the tour through the cruise company. The ship will wait for their own tour to return.

We always do our own thing at Nassau. The one thing that I will mention is the onslaught of Taxi drivers. We are always inundated with them when we get off the ship....

I have to agree,we did do an arranged excursion around Nassau on our first cruise and weren't terribly impressed so on our second we stayed on board the ship and really enjoyed exploring all over the ship whilst it was quieter

We did our own thing in Nassau on our first cruise. We were very inexperienced travelers and we were fine. We took a taxi to Atlantis and looked around at the free parts (casino, shops, etc). We visited a public beach. We shopped a little around the port area and went to the straw market. We were back on the ship long before the all aboard time.

The only thing worth doing in Nassau (dozens of visits) is find a good restaurant that has fresh off the boat conch. Go directly west of the port to the Western Esplanade beach and you'll find at least a dozen restaurants to pick from.. i believe two brothers was my favorite. They do genuinely have the best conch fritters/ fried conch dishes I've ever had. Atlantis is expensive to enter, except the casino which is free entry, the downtown shops are mediocre at best, and the beaches are some of the worst you'll see in any port...

However, their señor frogs makes a killer conch salad which they make fresh at your table.

By the third time in Nassau all we did is leave the ship, hit the straw market, go to a few local shops, and then get back on - maybe 2 hours start to finish.

My one daughter does like fresh coconut. It is nothing like a coconut in the stores in the states. This is a young, fresh coconut, the meat is like jelly, not hard as a rock. They have them chilled in the straw market. We get one, and then walk around and look at a few shops while eating it,

I can't verify this, as I have never rented a scooter there, but I have been told to watch out for them. Apparently if you return one late in the day, lets say 45 minutes before all aboard, they will say you damaged it, and need to pay for the damages. IF you argue, they will offer to call the police to sort it our, which of course will take an hour or so. Since you don't have the time, you pay.

I'm sure not all of the scooter rental places are like that, but I did hear from some other cruises, and from some websites to watch out for it.

Just don't rent a scooter in port... personal story, I managed to wreck one in Cozumel about 4 years ago after riding across some dirt/sand and ended up paying a $650 fee for repairs... luckily they didn't report me to my ship's captain which is protocol.

We usually stay on the boat beacause Nassau stinks. However we did have a nice time at the John Watlimgs rum distillery. But we only did that once and stayed on the boat the other times.
