Trip Report Two broke guys & a dog (for the last time.) (Once more, with feelings. 1/13/25.)

No, I’m not mad at Disney. We’ll be back (in fact, it can’t be soon enough.) But this turned out to be our last trip together as a family.

Who: Brian (R) Tony (L) and Kylie.
IMG_2010.jpeg

When: May, 2023.

Can’t tease this, so I’ll just come out with it.

We’ve posted TRs over the years under the “Two broke guys & a dog” banner (and other titles.) Our May trip was short, and we had already booked August for my birthday (complete with a planned meet up with @Tuvalu) so I thought I’d make one double TR after August.

I ended up with Covid mid-month and we had to postpone to December for Brian’s birthday.

In the meantime, Kylie, our 14 year old German Shepherd/Chow Chow was diagnosed with heart failure. That “heads up” turned out to be a gift and a blessing that allowed us to spend so much extra quality time with her.

Kylie’s 14th bday on Halloween:
IMG_1696.jpeg
She stayed with us through the holidays, rubbing on the Christmas tree when she walked past it, per usual (like a cat lol) and was really doing well - eating, going for walks, snuggling. I expected more of a slow, gradual decline…but she passed yesterday. Now my heart is failing.

I don’t know how far I’ll get with this today. It might actually be too soon. But I thought it could be therapeutic, and a nice tribute.

For some reason, since my 30s, if I cry even a little, my eyelids swell up and it’s hard to undo. Ice helps only temporarily. I fear typing all this out will continue the waterworks (it already has) and prolong that condition. OTOH, they’re already swollen, so WTH? I’ll play it by ear, if that’s ok.

This is my love letter to my pup.

Overall: Mama Melrose: not terrible. It’s like Peter Pan Diner near our house: only acceptable if you’re already drunk. Magically worked for us this time. 🤣

Staff were lovely. Tipped pretty high to help make up for their slow night. Will we return? I wouldn’t count on it.

I don’t remember which transportation we took back to our room. Good thing I wasn’t driving. Especially good thing Brian wasn’t!

It’s been a year. A year to the day. We needed to get drunk. It was the 13th. Toast to Kylie. Again and again! And it was over.

We were clear headed enough to make sure he properly cleaned his wound, and I had some antibiotic ointment on me.

After a night of me again not sleeping more than 4-5 hours 🤦🏻‍♂️ (even Julie mentioned it looked like I needed some rest) we have one more park day to go. 😀

Turns out we were the only booking in the 8pm hour, they said. It had been a slow night. I know how that feels. Funny, the parks didn’t feel slow. I’m guessing folks tried to eat earlier and duck inside before it got too cold.
I hadn’t slept well the night before. I thought some comfort food was in order to help me conk out tonight.

Love the decor.

I hear records are making a comeback. 😉😉🕺🏻

Looking at the apps, this sounded interesting.

Now, if we were someplace like Tiffins or Terralina’s, I’d expect this would come out with a fancy shmear of white bean puree with chunks of eggplant and a half bulb of roasted garlic to dip in it.

Nope. It was hummus.

With meh bread.

It was fine. The ratio of bean to bread was off. You would need like a giant scoop of bean dip with each bite of bread.

Challenge accepted. We eventually cleaned the plate, with the help of a spontaneous delivery of ciabatta bread with the usual dip of oil with herbs. That helped give some flavor to the otherwise bland hummus. We didn’t care, we were hungry.

To my surprise, B ordered a whiskey breeze. I held off for a bit, knowing myself. 😈

I ordered the standard chicken parm, which I had gotten at Tony’s on our Valentine’s Day trip. Let’s compare apples to apples.

B ordered the rigatoni bolognese, out of character for him.

I ate half of mine and he ate most of his. I was filling up on the breads and stuff. How was the chicken parm? Eh, well, not terrible. Also kind of bland. The chicken was good quality, the rest was…you know, fine. Better than Boma. 🤣 Not as good as Tony’s. Kind of bad diner tasting. Fine for drunk at 9pm. Wouldn’t book it for a meal with expectations. Would book Tony’s.

Despite all this, for some reason I thought this would be good:

I mean, it’s a tiramisu martini! Why hadn’t I seen this anywhere else, ever?

Our server said it was good, and had Bailey’s, etc. What? Bailey’s? Re-read those ingredients. I assumed she was mistaken. Tiramisu martini? LFG!!

View attachment 837563

OK, it was cute…but it was a mudslide. (Clearly with Bailey’s.) I liked mudslides in my 20’s. It was fine. I tried to find tiramisu flavor in it. Nah.

I was about to tell Brian what I thought of it. I looked up and Brian “I never get drunk” was asleep sitting up at the table(!)

Dat bish was wreckeded!

It was time to go. He got a to go box for what I found out when I raided it in the middle of the night was two pieces of rigatoni (!?!) and I took home half my chicken parm with unsalted(?!) spaghetti. (You always throw some salt in the pasta water. Duh.)

Random empty HS pics as we exited. Nothing “arty” this time. 😆

Oops, max pic limit. Please hold.
Ok had to give a heart for Bobby Vinton album. I grew up listening to my Mom's album. And, yes, I've heart there is a comeback too. lol
Sad emoji for dinner at M Melrose's. We've had good and meh there. I guess it depends on the chef.
Laugh emoji (on my computer so no emojis lol) for Brian sleeping at the table.
Sad for the meh martini. Where on earth is the tiramisu ??

I thought of you on this trip a lot. We lost our granddoggie on the 10th last week.

I was thinking I put too much stuff into some posts, and people don’t know which emoji to use lol. I should probably break it up more, but I like to counter the negative with a positive!

Guess who didn’t sleep after drinking and eating comfort food? This guy. Brian slept through the night and beyond. (He needed it.) I’ve found once the alcohol is processed through my system, I wake up. That was 3am. I never fell back to sleep! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️😳

When B got up, I asked how his leg was, and he was fine. No issues. That’s a relief. When 250 pounds falls to the ground, bad things can happen. I told ya he’s a trooper.

Oh, what a beautiful morning!

IMG_0249.jpeg

Again, we had nice weather. Not as warm as Christmas, but we were never freezing or uncomfortable. I was so happy about that. Mix of sun and clouds today. Much nicer in the sun. We knew when it went down, it would get chilly, and we should plan accordingly.

So did everyone else.

IMG_0253.jpeg

It was not dead during our week when it’s usually dead. Not horrendous, but more crowded than expected.

That’s right, it’s an MK day. The DD’s did their thing.

To me, when IASW has a 25 minute wait, that’s not dead. Remember, we usually hit MK during nighttime fireworks and do almost all the standards as nearly walk-ons.

Here’s a marching band.

The Riverboat sounded good - it’s closing, we hadn’t been in years, the weather was good, and the HM wait was too long. Alas, it had just left. No worries, I had another idea in the area (although the Riverboat would prove elusive and a bit frustrating.)

Still a fave. No need to sing about blood to be funny. What would have been funny was if I remembered to sing that the night before: “There was…(clang) blood on my husbaaaaand, and (twang) buh-lood on the ground…”

I’m terrible.

B had been annoying me trying to text while walking. I was trying to get from the Jamboree to the Riverboat, but since he wasn’t paying attention, he didn’t follow. I got his attention, shot a look 🤨 and as I arrived at the dock(?) they called it and put up the ropes. If you thought the first look I shot was bad…

Trying to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, I noticed the HM wait had dropped from 40 minutes to 15 - but there was a mob of people heading over there. By the time we could see the number in person, it had jumped to 30, and then quickly corrected to 40. No, thank you.

And I say that with no ill-will. We’ve been on that thing a zillion times. We have no reason to wait 40 minutes for it when we know there will be plenty more chances with shorter waits.

We were clearly out of practice catching the daytime parade schedules when we should have made a beeline to HM rather than CBJ. Lesson learned. I had considered LL for the day, but felt we had too late a start - and again, why pay for HM?

Per usual, I had another idea.

I had seen something online recently about a corn mousse at Pecos Bill’s - another place we hadn’t stopped in many years, and it would keep us in the area.

We got a nacho bowl with citrus chicken to hold us over (despite splitting a pulled pork sandwich & fries at the resort - oh, and two double-shots of Jameson at the pool bar, did I forget to mention that?)

IMG_0269.jpeg

And while this looks like a piece of corn on the cob

IMG_0270.jpeg

It’s not. It’s pure corn mousse, made to look like a piece of corn on the cob. Points for presentation and taste! Easily worth $6.99 for the fun alone.

Back to the boat - missed it again! This time we sat and waited.

I decided to give Brian a tip about live trip reporting, because that’s really what we were both doing - he was just doing it differently, texting pics to his friends - and I had a lot more experience.

If you’re not careful, it can feel like you’re not spending time with each other on your trip as much as with other people. There are times where it makes sense to update your peeps, and there are times where you need to be present with your traveling companion(s.) Sometimes you have to just take pictures, and make your updates later. I think he got it.

Coming up: Riverboat pic dump!

My pics tell me I’m telling the story slightly out of order, but here’s proof HM was down to 15 minutes.

IMG_0299.png

Why didn’t I think of this sooner? I think I thought it was only a 7am thing or something.

At this point, they were up to group 89. I knew it was a long shot.

Squirrel!

In that last pic, Brian said, “You guys are our mascots.” I clarified, “You represent us on our Christmas tree.” Hence, we got a “Yes!” reaction.

This was an unexpected cool moment! It was a short wait, and we were the last ones before they took a break to get some acorns. 💕💕💕

We realized it was getting late, and we didn’t have time to walk all the way over to the CoP and then sit in there for 20 minutes. We had promised Julie we’d get there earlier than the night before.

But, there was something else I really wanted to do - another new experience, and something we didn’t get to do on our Christmas trip.

Our monorail bar crawl took us from the Grand Floridian to the Contemporary, but we never got to the Poly!

We exited the MK and headed to the resort launches. In keeping with our luck with boats today, it pulled away just as we arrived. In the time we waited for the next one, we could have gone on CoP. 😆

Finally, we boarded. Not chilly yet!
