Trip report for January 14-19, 2011

This trip was to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday. When I turned 40 in July 2009, my husband, son (then 10, now 12), sister and I celebrated at WDW and she'd decided she wanted to do the same thing.

This time, however, my husband stayed home and two friends from the UK came over to join us.

Resort: We stayed at the Pop Century resort, my first time there! I've stayed at ASMu and ASMo, as well as the Poly, Beach Club, and Animal Kingdom Lodge. For a short trip, the Pop was fine, though it was a
little tight with three of us trying to get ready at the same time in the morning.

Room:
I booked a preferred room, but found that I did not prefer it very much as it faced the Hippy Dippy Pool. This would have been nice if we'd spent any time at the pool, but as it was a bit cool we didn't. However, lots of people did, including a group of kids who were screaming their heads off at 6:45am one morning! That said, the room was spotless and everything was in working order.

Food:
The food court was fine, if a bit busy in the mornings. We did not eat any lunches or dinners there, though we did stop by in the evenings for tea or a snack. We did not do the DDP - we just never eat enough food to justify the cost!

Bus service: Overall, the bus service was surprisingly good. I've heard reports of long waits at the Pop and have experienced long waits at the parks, but we must have been very lucky, because the longest we waited for any bus was maybe 8-10 minutes, including to and from Downtown Disney.

Crowds:
This was MLK weekend, but I would put the overall crowds levels around a 6 or 7. While there were a couple of crowded moments, we had little to no waits for most rides (of course, some of that was also due to a good park strategy!). Yes, there were a lot of Brazilian tour groups, but we never had any issue with them and actually found them to be relatively well-behaved.

Our evening flight arrived a few minutes early and our bags were among the first 25 off the plane. We headed straight down to the Magical Express area and checked in with no problem, though I was surprised to see so many people at 10:30pm.

We waited maybe 15 minutes before our bus arrived and were on our way to Pop Century! But after we dropped off half the bus at Caribbean Beach Resort, it was nearly 11:30 before we got to the check-in desk. Though you would think it was a quiet time of night, there were quite a few people waiting to check-in and only 3 CMs on the desk. Knowing that a ME bus was due to arrive, you'd think they'd have a bit more. Then again, it wasn't their fault the group of four women in front of us wanted to buy their park tickets right then, all with different forms of payment! As it was, we didn't get to our room until nearly midnight where we headed straight to bed!

Next Up: Day by Day reports and some photos!

Our friends from the UK had arrived on Wednesday and enjoyed two days in the parks before we got there and we'd previously arranged to meet them at 7:45am as we had ADRs at Kona Cafe for 8:15am. The five of us grabbed a cab over to the Poly ($12) as that was the quickest option. After a quick tour around the lobby, we headed up to Kona for Tonga Toast! My sister opted for the Banana Macademia Nut pancakes which they brought out with a birthday candle! We had a nice, leisurely breakfast and hopped on the monorail, arriving at MK just in time for the character train and countdown to opening.

And it was at this point that I realized our park tickets had NOT been added to our room keys! I had booked the room first and added the park hoppers after the fact and though I'd asked for them to be put on the room keys, it didn't happen. But a quick trip to Guest Services resolved it and they printed paper tickets for me, my sister, and my son. A bit annoying, but not that big of a deal.

We headed straight for Space Mountain. It was walk-on at that point, but we grabbed FastPasses for later. Then we hit Buzz Lightyear and the TTA to kill some time before heading back to SM. We made our way through the FP last and got right to the point where we'd hand in our passes when the ride broke down. We waited for a few minutes and could see the lights come on inside the ride while they evac'd (SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR!). They sent everyone in the queue out to the exits and gave us a complementary FP good for any FP ride that day.

So, we headed through Fantasyland and made stops to see Pooh, Snow White (one last time before it's gone!), and IASW. I snapped this photo of the crane behind the castle taking down the last of the Christmas decorations:

Next up was Haunted Mansion and then, finally, we decided to use our FP at BTMRR. Splash looked so forlorn without any water and an empty queue!

At this point, we decided to stop for lunch and went into Pecos Bill's for a bite to eat before heading over to Pirates. No sooner had we started towards the queue when we saw crowdes of people heading towards us! The ride had shut down!! Not to be deterred, we opted for a Jungle Cruise and a Dole Whip before heading back to Tomorrowland to see if Space was up and running. It was, with only a 20 minute wait! But when we rode, there was quite a bit of light bleeding in from an area we could not quite figure out. As much of a Disney fan as I am, and as cool as it would be to see all of the inside of Space, it does make the ride not quite as exciting to be able to see the track. We found out after we unloaded that TTA had gone down and the light was from the area of track that went through Space.

At this point, crowds had really increased and we decided to go check out Epcot. We decided to spend our time strolling through the countries instead of trying to cram in more rides. But we did jump on SSE (5 minute wait) and registered for a Kim Possible Adventure. We strolled through Canada and the UK (stopped to watch some of the street players) before picking up our Kimmunicator at International Gateway. We had missions in France and Germany, but checked out Morocco and the new stuff in Italy. We seriously considered eating at Via Napoli but the prices were a bit high ($40 for a pizza that only serves 3 to 5 people!?). I was starting to get a bit concerned, though, as it was close to dinner time, we were all hungry and we did not have ADRs for that night. And, unsurprisingly, most of the places we checked did not have any seating available. We decided to check San Angel Inn and, if we could not get in, would settle for Electric Umbrella! But we lucked out and were able to get a table with just a short wait.

After dinner, we headed back to MK to watch Wishes and finally caught the bus back to Pop. A very successful first day!

All 5 of us are also avid Harry Potter fans, so we had to make a pilgrimage to WWoHP. I'd arranged for a private van to take us to Universal and bring us back which worked out really well. Won't go into too much detail, but WWoHP was busy (the wait for Forbidden Journey got up 90 minutes at one point), but we paced ourselves and were able to do quite a lot, including lunch in the Three Broomsticks. The rest of the park was not nearly as busy. We had dinner at Margaritaville on the way out.

Monday, January 17

A quick breakfast at the Pop food court and we were on our way to Hollywood Studios. We wanted to hit a few things there, as well as a few rides at Epcot. But we knew we'd ultimately spend more time at Epcot and decided to made DHS our first stop of the morning. Again, just a short wait for the bus and we were there for rope drop. The weather was very overcast and we heard a few rumbles of thunder, but were hoping the rain would be light and brief (boy, were we wrong!).

Though we were only a few people away from the front of the throng, things got a bit ridiculous. Obviously, everyone was headed to TSM and it was every man for himself. They really have to come up with a better system, because there was a lot of maneuvering and downright pushing and shoving which made things not quite so magical. We eventually made it to the queue and, while the rest of them got in line, I took everyone's tickets and got FastPasses. They had CMs there who were actually taking the tickets, putting them in the machines, and handing the passes and tickets back to the guests. I suppose if you're unfamiliar with the machines, it might make the process go more quickly. But my CM was kind of new and I kept thinking how much faster it would be if I could do it myself. But I got the FPs and rejoined my party just as they were going into the building. The queue moved quickly, we rode once, and, since we had at least an hour before we could ride again with our FPs, headed back to the front of the park for RnRC. The wait time said 30 minutes, but it wasn't even 15. However, it was just starting to rain as we went inside. And by the time we got back out, it was a full on downpour.

I had brought our ponchos that we bought a few years ago (always pack them now!), so my sister, son and I were covered but our UK friends were not. We made a dash for the restrooms near RnRC and had them wait there while we ran to buy ponchos for them (and an adult one for my son who was 7 when we bought them and has outgrown the child-size we had for him). Once we were properly attired, we went on Tower of Terror. The rain was still coming down as we got off the ride, so the gift shop was packed. We had to wind our way out and trudged back to Pixar Place to use our FPs on TSM. The rain had let up a bit, but we agreed we were done with DHS and decided to take the boat launch over to Epcot.

It was kind of a miserable ride because the rain really picked up and the windows of the boat were fogged over, but we were at least undercover. Once we got to Epcot, we made a plan. Four of us wanted to ride Mission: Space, but one did not. So, he took our tickets, went to the Land pavilion, got FPs for all of us for Soarin' and grabbed a table at Sunshine Seasons while we all went to M:S. At this point, it was getting kind of miserable. The rain was pretty steady and it was a bit windy, so the ponchos blew around as we walked. Our feet and jeans were wet and we were cold and hungry. But, we soldiered on!

We decided that we were staying in the Land until our FPs could be used. So, we took our time with lunch and relaxed for a while. Then we took a tour of Living with the Land (walk on! I remember when this used to have such a long wait and it's own FPs!) and watched The Circle of Life before heading back down to Sunshine Season for hot chocolate and a dessert. Finally, it was time for Soarin'! (And, yes, we could have waited in the standby line as the wait for that was around 50 minutes but we were in no hurry to go back into the rain.) Miraculously, when we headed back outside the rain had stopped!

We split up again, as the others wanted to go on Test Track and I decided I really wanted to check out Nemo. Actually, I was just less than enthusiastic about the outdoor portion of TT in the cool, damp air. So, I did that, while the rest of them did TT. While waiting for them, I spotted the TRON monorail.

The rain had definitely put a damper on the day, though, and we ended up doing a bit of shopping and headed back to our resort. On the bus, we decided that once we got back to our rooms we'd change into some warm, dry clothes and venture into Downtown Disney. While we didn't have ADRs, we took a chance on Raglan Road and were able to get a(n outdoor) table immediately. Sitting outside wasn't so bad as they had space heaters and the food and drink warmed us up. This was my first time after wanting to go for years and it is definitely a new favorite! After dinner, we wandered around DTD until 10pm.

This was our last day and, hands down, our best day. It also became our worst.

As this was my sister's birthday trip, and Pooh is her absolute favorite, I made ADRs for breakfast at Crystal Palace. The absolute best part of that was being able to get into the park before opening and having Main Street and the hub nearly to ourselves. PHOTO We spent quite a few minutes there, taking photos and chatting to cast members before heading to CP. In all the years I've visited WDW, this was our first time eating there. Food and service were excellent and my sister was in her glory with all of the characters. It was so worth the cost to see her so happy.

An empty hub!

After breakfast, we met up with our friends and headed straight for Tomorrowland. We rode Space Mountain twice and hit Carousel of Progress (always a special place in my heart!) and the Laugh Floor. Then we walked over to Adventureland, finally getting to ride Pirates and even catching an appearance of Captain Jack as we left the gift shop. We hit BTMRR and Haunted Mansion again, as well as catching the Hall of Presidents (our UK friends wanted to see the updated version with Obama).

Next up was a visit to Toontown before it's all gone! We got our photos taken with Mickey and Minnie and took a break to have a snack. Everyone wanted one last (which became two with such short waits!) ride on Space Mountain. And then we had to have one last Jungle Cruise. And one last Dole Whip. All while enjoying a really beautiful day with lots of warm sunshine!

We had ADRs for Boma and the park was closing early that night (for the Fantasyland expansion press event), but we had some time to kill and made our way slowly down Main Street and did some last minute shopping. We decided to take a round trip on the Railroad to kill more time, to see some parts of the park we don't usually see and just because it was relaxing. As we came back into the Main Street station, we found we were right on time for the flag ceremony, so we stopped to enjoy that and took our last glimpses of the Magic Kingdom before heading off to AKL.

We were still a bit early for our ADRs so we took time to wander around the lobby and out onto Arusha Rock to see some of the animals. We also walked down the two wings to see if we could glimpses more animals from the viewing windows. Eventually, we made our way down to Boma and they were able to take us in early. Dinner was, as always fabulous!! They couldn't keep refilling the corn and spinach pudding fast enough! We had a nice, leisurely time and took a cab back to Pop about 8pm.

Around 9pm, we headed up to our rooms to back for our trip home the next day. And that is when my son started shivering and feeling nauseous. I'll spare you the details, but it was a long night that ended with a $41 Boma dinner down the toilet. When we got home the next day, the doctor confirmed he had the flu. It was a real shame to end such a wonderful trip on such a bad note!

Overall, though, it was a great time of year to visit both weather- and crowd-wise. Our UK friends had a great time and we're already planning make this an annual visit!

Thanks for reading this trip report!
