trip insurance

Just booked a June trip for 14 people using five rooms and 5 day park hopper staying at CBR. Reservation lady very helpful taking about one hour to make the arrangements. Question about trip insurance she offered. Sounds expensive and I didn't purchase but was told I could add later. Thoughts on any experiences using the insurance and is it worth the extra expense?

I assume that you have car insurance, house insurance and probably health/dental insurance ?
Insuring your Disney trip is just like any of the above - its expensive, its a pain in the ar** but boy, you're glad you had it if something goes wrong !!!
Insurance for us is essential as it covers the flights to and from the UK and the 14 days accommodation - its all about having the re-assurance knowing that we're covered should anything go wrong

Like anything, it depends on your level of comfort with risk. I do not buy trip insurance or extended warranties on tech purchases. I can afford to "take the hit" on the rare occasions where those types of insurance would be of value.

I do however have life, car, extended health, income loss and household insurance, because they cover some fairly catastrophic potential losses.

I travel to Disney a lot by most non-Florida resident standards, six trips last year and well over 50 trips since 2001. Trip insurance never would have been claimed against for any of those trips. Had I purchased it for every single trip, I would have invested thousands of dollars. I have the wherewithal to cover any unexpected expense that could arise on any given trip and the cost would not exceed what I've already saved by not purchasing insurance. However, if the sudden cancellation of a trip where you would lose deposits, have to pay for replacement clothing/luggage/toiletries or have to pay for emergency health care that isn't already covered would be a financial hardship, then buying insurance is worthwhile.

I do buy insurance when taking cruises [my son and I are booked on the WDWMagic Family Cruise in June ] because my out-of-country health coverage does not have sufficient coverage to take care of an emergency evacuation from the ship and that's an expense I wouldn't readily be able to absorb.

It's also worth checking what you may already be covered for by your credit card(s). I have cards that automatically include fairly comprehensive trip cancellation insurance if I purchase the trip with their card. Some are better than others and some have very extensive exclusions and conditions.

Each person's needs are different. For me, I only go on vacation once a year in the spring, and I save up enough money for that trip. If something unexpected came up, and I had to cancel my trip last-minute, (without travel insurance) I'd probably be out of most of my hard-earned trip money. There's no way I could replace that amount of money until the following year.

Therefore, in my situation, I'd rather pay for the trip insurance, as it gives me some peace of mind. :)

I always buy trip insurance, too. I get it through TravelGuard -- if you buy within a few days of your initial trip deposit (15 days, I think), you can get a "cancel for ANY reason and get a full refund" policy. You can visit their website for a quote...

Most trip insurance covers you once the trip begins. If you are worried about it covering you for cancelling the trip before it begins for a covered reason, be sure the insurance does.

WDW's cancellation policies are very good, they will usually let you reschedule with no penalty. Even if you cancel the day before your trip starts, you get all of your money back except for the deposit. (Note - this is the WDW portion only - airfare has different rules!)

I highly recommend buying travel insurance when cruising - you are traveling internationally, and the medical issues alone can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

We always buy it. With only 2 adults it is not that expensive and we usually travel between Oct and April from Michigan and snow is always possible.

We have bought it in the past but its not worth it for us. All of our insurance work out of state and our credit card company insures our trip so it's not worth it. Disney always tries to push it because they make a ton on it. I've had to delay a Disney trip due to bad weather without insurance and Disney just moved my days even though I called the day we were supposed to check in and we had no fees.

If you pay by credit card check what they insure. My card insures my entire trip just by paying with it.

Thanks for all the input. Pretty sure I will stay with my first thought and pass on the trip insurance. Sounds like I can probably work with reservations if something big occurs. My only concern to cancel would be in the event of an auto accident on the trip there or a sudden death or accident with a family member.
