My fiancée and I, will be travelling in the states for 3 months next year, starting in San Antonio Texas and working our way around and then spending as much time in Orlando as possible, we'll be travelling by bus and train.

I was wondering should i visiting DL CA, people i have spoken to have said once you've been to WDW, DL doesn't seem as good (Not my opinion as ive never been).

Also does anyone have anywhere or anything that you think i really need to go see or do.

I'd love as much help and advise as possible please.

Thanks

It will be her first time driving out there and seeing as i dont drive she will doing it all,I know it might sound silly but i think she seen to many of them horrer films where people get killed in the middle of nowhere and she thinks that might happen to us if we got our own car.
Alot of you are saying to start in l.a but we wana go to texas, arizona, colorado aswell so we thought it might make sense to start there and make our way west then north montan via l.a

Personally, I love driving in the US and have never had any problems. Admittedly the longest drive we did was from Las Vegas to LA (approx 5 hours) and it was a pretty flat straight road! The next longest was from Boston to North Conway(3 hrs) which was a gorgeous drive in the fall! My DH and I usually fight to drive when we are on holiday (unless there is wine involved for me and then I have no problem letting him do all the driving:lol:). One thing to remember though is that even the smallest cars are more powerful than we have here in the UK, are usually automatic (which I love) and have cruise control (laziest driving at its best!!)

If I was driving alot around different states (which I would love to do btw) I would try and find out as much about the routes beforehand so I knew where the best places to stop (for toilet breaks etc) and I would definately get sat nav and make sure I carried a mobile everywhere.

Saying that though, IMO I would be wary of having only one person who can drive because what happens if they get sick or break their ankle (worse case scenario I know but I am a pessimistic worrier by nature).

:ROFLOL: So she's going to drive around expecting "The Hills Have Eyes" around every corner.

It's true you have to do things to be safe when you are on a road trip. Make sure you have cell phones and maybe even join AAA ( http://www.AAA.com) for roadside assistance if you break down.

We have driven all around the country and I expect many of the Americans here have and it's pretty safe. You will be on major highways most of the time unless you plan otherwise (sometimes it's fun to get off the major highways and travel what are called the "blue routes" so that you can really see the towns up close). Traveling over the mountains and through the desert can get a little lonely but still, it is safe.

Let me mention Http://www.randmcnally.com because that is such a great tool for planning routes. AAA has the same tools and you can print out elaborate maps with either.

Ask us anything about the routes specifically - I know we'd all love to help.

I love it! Yeah, Texas Chainsaw was unnerving, wasn't it!!!

The major roads are plentiful with gas stations - I guess you could get in the middle of nowhere on a back road and get into trouble but mostly just at night when things would be closed.

Those websites I gave you AAA.com especially, can map out routes for you that will show you what exits have gas stations, rest stops, restaurants and hotels. Maybe you should consider a membership and using them for your trip planning. AAA is a highly respected and amazingly affordable resource for people traveling by car in the US. You could map it all out and be certain that you are near gas stations etc.

Some of the cities - well it's not like the whole city is bad, just parts of them that you don't want to be driving through. I live in Cleveland and there are just parts that are too dangerous.

Let us know when you map your route and we can give you more advice! You'll have so much fun. I wish I were doing a big road trip this year!
