Traveling with 17 month old: What to pack?

I will be heading down on Monday with a 17 month old. We live in Iowa and we are already wearing pants and longsleeve shirts.

What should I pack for her? Should I pack two outfits a day? A combination of shorts and pants??

Any suggestions from moms or dads would be appreciated!

I've never travelled with a little one, but I'm an experience Disney traveller who almost always goes at this time of year and can tell you from experience it is best to pack a bit of everything. So the same should hold true for packing for a little one as well. You should pack a little bit of everything for all kinds of weather as you never know what kind of weather you will get. The weather can change down there from one day to the next.

One year it was 85 and sunny every day and we were in t-shirts and shorts at midnight in the Magic Kingdom. Last year was all over the place. Some days we got away with t-shirts and shorts in the day and jeans and sweatshirts in the evenings, other days we were getting up and it was high 30s/low 40s in the mornings and we were lucky to crack the low 60s during the day.

Also it never hurts to pack a pair of mitts/gloves, especially for a little one, especially if you are staying at a resort like the Wilderness Lodge where you will be travelling back to the resort at night over open water. What most people don't realize is that the temperature drops quite dramatically and quickly once you are out on the open water and away from land.

We are leaving in 15 days with our 2 1/2 yr old. I plan to pack both. During the day I will put her in shorts and bring pants/long sleeve shirt for night time. She wears crocs- so I will just bring a pair of socks to slip on at night too.
Good thing is her clothes are little and both seasons will fit in a suitcase- our clothes on the other hand. I think we need more suitcases.

It's not unusual in the fall and spring for temps in this part of the country to swing wildly during the day... by 30 degrees or more.

You may wake up to 40 degrees, hit 75 during the afternoon, and then plummet back down to the low 50s after the sun goes down.

Pack everything from a bathing suit to a jacket, and everything in between. Smile!

DS was few months older when we went last December 8-14. I packed him pants, a short sleeve and a long sleeve t-shirt for every day. I also packed a few pairs of shorts. I figured if he wore shorts it might only be for a few hours so could wear them twice if needed. I also brought a mid-weight coat and his winter hat.

The first 2 days it was perfect. We got to wear shorts and even was able to hit the pool. The 3rd day was rainy, but luckily cleared up before MVMCP. The next 2 days were COLD mid 40's I think. They were the days we were at EPCOT & DHS. Almost all of our pictures have the kids in their hats and coats. DH had brought a windbreaker for himself and ended up having to buy a sweatshirt because he was freezing. The night at EPCOT we bought a blanket for DSs to share while we waited for Illuminations.

Pay full attention to the weather. Pack a few warm outfits and cold outfits, because things can change too.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. I've back three pairs of pants, capri pants and shorts for my DD. I've also packed 5 long sleeve and 5 short sleeve. I am also brining along two rompers that would be a comfortable alternative for her. I just don't want to be unprepared!!

That's why it's best to be prepared for anything by packing a little of everything. Our travelling companions didn't heed our advice last year and they froze because they didn't have warm enough clothing and ended up having to buy things down there they they could have/should have brought with them.

Just there a week and half ago - although we did swim (crazy kids) - on Thursday as we were departing, sweatshirts didn't even seem warm enough. It was a high of 79 or so, and a low of probably the 40s. So be prepared.

One thing I will suggest is if you have a stroller cover - bring it. My cover was never used (6 trips to Disney) over 4+ years. I pack it each time just in case. Used it this year, and it was great. Although DDs legs stick out of the stroller because she is really too big for it, it worked out well when we did get rain.

This is why we always pack a pair of mittens and a headband. They don't take up a lot of room in the suitcase and can come in handy on those chilly mornings/evenings. If you can keep your hands/ears warm it's easier to keep the rest of you warm.
