Travelers checks

I'm ringing a friend to WDW with me(we leave thurs!:sohappy: ) and she was planning on using traveler's checks. Can she use them anywhere or does she have to cash them first at the hotel? Can she use them at restaurants? Counter service? What about the stores? I guess I'm asking where do they accept traveler's checks on property? Thanks!

I've never had a problem using them at the parks. A couple of times offsite they wanted to see ID, but that's it.

They take travelers checks at most spots.... only thing is to watch the dollar amount cashing .... a $500 check at a small shop for a $1.00 item, they may not have change for that!!!! But we use $50 and $100 with no problems.

If I remember correctly, about the only places that don't take them are the snack carts.

NOPE!!! We do take Travler's Checks!! However, if you have a $100 dollar one or more, I'd wait till later in the day, when we've gotten enough $20s for change :) Unless you want to buy some other guests ice cream as well....:lookaroun

You may already be aware of this, but, depending on how much your bank charges, it may be cheaper to use an ATM card to get cash rather than using traveller's checks.

I found ATMs pretty plentiful around WDW. Can't remember how much they charged though.

You'd have to make fewer, larger withdrawals to make the fees work out in favor of the ATM. For example, if the ATM charges $2, that is 20% of a $10 ATM withdrawal which is pretty bad, so the traveller's check would be better. However, that same $2 is only 1% of a $200 ATM withdrawal which would be cheaper than traveller's checks (I think).

Considering that I'm 15 and she's 14 it's not really up to us to decide which she gets. Her parents were considering giving her a debit card but decided against it and are giving her traveler's checks. But thanks though.

AAA sells Visa travelers cheques (Disney is affiliated w/Visa now and not Amex) and they are fee free for members. I'm planning to get some for my trip, b/c i'm trying to lay off the credit cards. -Stephanie

travelers cheques are valid as cash in almost any US store (not just touristy ones)...

Thanks Kelly for clearing that up. I had once read somewhere that the carts didn't, but it's been a long time since I"ve read that. I know how quickly things like that change. Thanks again :)
