transportation

How difficult is it to use the disney transportation to the parks? We usually drive or rent a car, but I am trying to save money and not get a rental car for the whole time.

We always rent a car and all we ever wind up using it for is to and from the airport. It really is a waste of money.

The WDW transportation is great. The only thing I wish they would change is go back to letting you go from one hotel to the next via buses. When we were there on our honeymoon in 93 you could hop a bus to the Polynesian from say Dixie Landings. But now you can't do that, you would need to take a bus from Dixie to say Magic Kingdom and then take the Monorail to the Polynesian.

In most cases this is not a problem, but we were going to the Hooptie Doo Review at Fort Wilderness and if we took the bus it would have been about 1 hour to get there and thay is if when you got to say the MK from Dixie to then go to FW, that there was no line and you could get on the next bus. We had the car and it took us 5 min.

So long story short, in normal cases the WDW transportation is the way to go.

It's very easy... Buses run from the resorts to the four theme parks, two water parks, and Downtown Disney. Buses are clearly marked, as are the load zones. They run about every 15-20 minutes, and are climate controlled.

If your transportation needs are mostly to the parks and back to your resort, you will be fine.

It gets more complicated if you are trying to get from resort to resort (my best advice is to use a park as your intermediate stop).

Buses at night to/from Downtown Disney are slow, and transportation to/from the water parks can also be slow.

Taxis are always an option, and one or two taxi rides are still cheaper than a week of a rental car.

I would definitely use the buses for transportation while on site. You will come to love those buses very quickly after you get there. Long waits are extremely unusual, and travel between resorts should be planned out ahead of time to cut down on time. I have to admit though, that I'm very partial to Disney transportation. Others may have different suggestions, but to save money, use Disney.

I love Disney Transport. It's fun and fast. Actually, my least favorite is monorail, most favorite being bus, only when boats on Crescent Lake aren't an option! They do a great job, and ahve only had one semi bad story. And most drivers are so nice.

Just curious, why is the monorail your least favorite. I love riding them.

The WDW transportation system is really good! Just make sure you ask for a "Transportation GUIDE/MAP" (often called a "property map") when you check-in to your resort. It gives all the details (well most..but not all) about how to use the transportation system. With this knowledge, you will not need a car (unless you want to go off site and buy lotto tickets). Don't leave your resort without it!

In answer to your question, the reason I do not prefer the monorail, making it my least favorite of all Disney Transport, is because when we travel during peak holiday times, as usual, the monorail seems the least efficient. You take it to MK or Epcot and it stops just outside the station due to "unusally high volumes."

I have never stayed at a Monorail Resort, so its busses at Caribbean Beach and busses, boats, and walking at Yacht Club and Dolphin. I've taken both the Resort loop and MK/Epcot loop, and, no lie, it is really fun and exciting, just not efficient for me b/c I really have no need for it.

Im sure if I were at a Monorail Resort, I'd love the monorail, but I dont use it and its sometimes "clogged" so its a waste sometimes. But always a ride is needed on it....:sohappy:

I like just because I think it is neat and have fond memories of being a child on it. We only go on one 1 or 2 times per trip to go over to the Polynesian for lunch or to take out a water mouse. We stay over at Dixie Landings (por) so it is buses for us as well. I agree, the monorial is not as efficient basically because there are not enough of them and too many people. Though more would not help either because you would have to cue them up to wait to drop and pick up. But as you said, a ride is always need on it. :D

Thanks for the response.

Its nice to get on the bus and relax and see the scenery instead of the road. Let Disney do the driving and enjoy! :sohappy:

Your own or a rental car can be useful to go other resorts.

When my family and I went down there a few weeks ago we got a car only to go to Universal and IOA. That's the only times (other than going to and from the airport) we used it.

Actually, Disney usually has three or four trains on each beam around the 7 Seas lagoon. The problem with efficiency is the people, both the riders and the operators. Sometimes the trains hold in a station for no other reason than the cast members are waiting on a guest to get on board or any one of probably a million other things that may not necessarily be a good reason to hold. On the resort beam you have that going on at each of the 5 stops and on the 2 stops on the MK line.

I would have to guess that if the ystem were fully automated that it would be tons more efficient. After arriving in a station, a train would only hold for so long and then depart, no exceptions. THis would also eliminate trains having to hold for other trains to leave a station so it could pull in as the computer could keep everything expertly sychronized and on time.

That seems to be the way the Walt Disney World Railroad works in the MK. Once the engineer gives two blasts on the whistle, the loading stops and the train is on its way. That's the way to run a railroad. :)

As for busses, they are incredibly efficient when you consider how many people they move during the course of a typical day.

However, if you are a control freak or a person who waits till the last minute to leave in order to make an appointment, please rent a car. You will be happier and so will those unfortunate guests and drivers who happen to be on the bus that is taking you to your destination after you are already upset.

Remember, a lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on anyone elses part.

Treat each priority seating or park arrival time as if it were an airplane departure time, allowing extra time for transportation, and you will have an excellent week.

Efficient, YES! However, I don't even want to guess at how many groups would be separated, or PO'ed that we didnt hold the train for them. As it stands now, I got AWFUL responses when I would cut off the line...

LOL, yea. Thats why in America the average family of 4 with teenagers has 5 cars. Too complicated to stay together.

I have waited in the monorail when it has stopped somewhere on the beam while it waited for another to leave the next stop.

The one thing about the buses is they can just pull up next to or behind another and people can get on. With the monorail it can;t be done. Please don't take this as a monorail bashing. I love them and would ride them in a heartbeat before the bus.

Also what you said about the no exeptions on trains holding. It could not work. What are they going to do, leave 1/2 a family behind because they call could not get on the monorail on time?

Sometime when you are there cueing up, the CMs have you go into sections so you can enter the train. Others not, so sometimes you have to scramble and have 2 people go in one door and 3 another.

But then you need to get to your car which could be way out in the middle of nowhere and also coming into the parks you might have to wait in a line.
