Tower of Terror seatbealts....

The old seat belt was much better than the new seat belts. It didn't retract nearly as fast, so you could get a bit more "slack" in the belt. More so than if you were sharing a lap bar with a larger person.
I loved the original seatbelt in the middle back. I used to request that seat everytime I rode ToT. I achieved more "airtime" than with the lapbar.

I thought I'd remembered it wrong when I was there after the change was made. It wasn't until just now that I realized it wasn't me.

Thanks! :)

I remember the first time I had the seat belt seat... I was boarding and the guy said "whelp, the good news is you are in the middle of the row.... the bad news, youv'e got nothing to hold onto.....

You mean to tell me there were no seat belts but just a lap bar when I went on the ride back in 1995 ? Holy cow that must of been one heck of a ride :jawdrop:

There was such a long time in between Disney trips that I forget details like that. Of course even with the seat belt its a great ride.

As a side bit of trivia, the capacity of the cars actually went down by 1 when they switched from lapbars to seatbelts. The back row used to seat 8 across (4 and 4), now it's 7 (4 and 3). In the staging areas you can see where they removed one of the brass numbered squares in the floor and filled it in with concrete.

I liked the ride sooo much better when it was a lap bar. I would really fly up out if my seat.
I have a photo of my wife on TOT. The one and only time she rode it. I'm sitting on her right with my hand on her right shoulder and a friend of ours is on her left with his hand on her left shoulder, and we're both trying to hold her down in place during the drop. It's a photo I take out to show anyone who comes to the house when we start talking about the TOT ride.:p The days of the lap bars were so much more fun.

Interesting. I never knew they had a lap bar on that ride. I think it's a lot safer with the seat belts though. I'm sure there's a reason the lap bars got removed....

I've never rode with the lap bars. Anyone know why they changed? Safety concerns because of large and small people in the same row I assume?

That and it was too easy for people slide their way out for 'stupid human tricks'. The individual belts allow the CMs to ensure every seat is belt'd and they have a visual check to ensure people aren't sitting on the belts.

Getting out of your seat for extra air time was a too popular (and dangerous) trick on the ride.

I've only ever known seat belts, even then I got way too much airtime and greyed out, followed by a migraine that knocked me out for a day. No more TOT for me :( My son (4) wants to go on it but I'm worried about the stresses on his little body.

Interesting. The first time I rode it back in '97 or '98 had lap bars. I didn't even think about the switch to the belts until this thread.

I loved the lapbar so much better. I remember you could float out of your seat and just kinda rest against it then get pushed back to your seat with full force! This was especially good if you were a little girl like me and had a big guy sit next to you holding the bar up!
