Too much construction?

I’m currently in the parks for the entire week and I can’t help but notice just how much construction there is going on, not just in the parks but everywhere. While I was in Epcot today there was 3 areas of huge tall cranes visible and more construction going on along the one side of the walkway exiting the World Showcase. At the Yacht and Beach clubs, half the walls have scaffolding on them and a pool is even closed. Magic kingdom had a building under scrims and of course there was the carousel. All this construction happening at once makes it feel a little less magical. What do you think?

Yeah, I know, it’s definitely necessary and I’m super excited for the attractions coming soon, but still, the process isn’t pretty. I’m just saying maybe it would’ve been better for them to plan out the construction so that it didn’t feel like it wasn’t all coming on at once.

Unfortunately, just like anywhere, construction is just a part of growing pains!

It will be uncomfortable for awhile until they are done, then it should be better!

They are adding a lot of stuff to the parks now!

We were down June 1st - 8th and said the same thing. Ive also seen YouTube videos since we were there showing more construction. The Space Montain exit seems to have gone under scrims and there were scrims up over the sidewalk and part of Mainstreet USA. Early in the trip my wife and I commented that it was the first time in 4 or 5 trips that gave an unobstructed view down Mainstreet looking at the castle.

Construction at the resorts is prevalent and the skyway is coming along nicely. There is roadwork in several places as well, which doesn’t bother/affect me as much as theming at the parks or resorts, but is nonetheless construction that is visible on any WDW vacation. Disney Springs is still being developed and I even saw an article about the golf coursess going down to see some improvements over the coming months. It seems that they are gearing up heavily for October 1 2021.
Now, full disclosure, these observations come from an AP holder (not local) that visits the parks at least twice a year and often times 3 or 4 times per year, as well as carrying DVC membership, so take that into account as you read this.

My thought is that we cant get the gain without the pain. Hear me out; Take Downtown Disney for example, it has been completely overhauled to Disney Springs and become a must visit on virtually every trip. The road construction that took place over there was brutal but the roadways before the Disney Springs conversion wasn’t great either. Look at it now, it’s amazing. Bus transportation is less congested and centrally located and the state of the art parking garages make driving yourself even more appealing.
Remember the Pandora construction? How long did that take? A Century? Remember how skeptical most of us die hard Disney fans were? Look how great that turned out. It’s beautiful over there. Improved quick service dining that is influencing other quick service locations and improving their quality and selections, Innovative ride systems that people are fascinated by, and attention to detail that is impossible not to notice. Toy Story Land will open in only a few days and I suspect we will be pleasantly surprised. Not to mention that Galaxy’s Edge will be revolutionary.

How about the room/resort upgrades we have seen. Pop Century, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Grand Floridian Villa’s, Polynesian Villa’s, Wilderness Lodge (both Copper Creek and Boulder Ridge) Villa’s, How improved are these locations? Ive stayed at Pop twice throughout the refurbishment and can testify that the resort is much improved with the updates to the rooms. I can say the same about every resort I listed. The only one that we have not actually stayed at is the WL since the refurbs, but we have visited and had stayed their before and can say, they too, are much improved. I can only imagine that the additions to Caribbean Beach and Coronado Springs along with their room overhauls and ovderalll ‘rebranding’ will have the same outcomes.

When it comes to transportation the bus fleet is still being converted to the new paint scheme and more accordion busses seem to be showing up. The Minnie van fleet is growing and service is improving. The Skyway is coming along and will become as memorable as a monorail ride is currently for future generations. It will be efficient and hopefully releve the bus fleet enough to service under-served areas of property. Imagine if we didn’t have to share a bus with two other resorts when we stay at one of the Crescent Lake resorts. I’m not saying this WILL happen but that it could be an additional benefit to the Skyway system coming online.

The construction stinks, but face it, the payoff is worth it. Think about this, all of the projects mentioned in this post have happened in the last 3-5 years. If there was no construction or improvements going on, we would complain that it was stale and outdated. I think that the construction is part of what keeps me coming back. I’m a bit of a completionist and WDW causes a complex for people like myself. I LOVE it, but find myself looking forward to the new things that are on the horizon. Even something as disenchanting as the roadwork at the MK entrance has me curios and anxious to see the updates. So, I wouldn’t say it makes things less magical per say, but it enhances my anticipation for future trips. We always try to experience something that we have never done each time we are on property and the changes make that easy to achieve lately. There have been very few things that we are disappointed with after they go through the construction process and I can only hope that that is the case with the current construction projects on property.

I agree all the construction is a downer but it is a necessary evil so to speak. Personally, I'm glad Disney is in full construction mode because Universal was putting on the pressure. Nice to see Disney responding and these next few years should be great with all the new offerings coming to the resort. Disney was stagnant for too long.

In the Parks
No
As been said in other threads already, this is the result of years and years of stagnant infrastructure upgrades /refurbishment/additions into the actual parks. Prior to Pandora, the last large project was NFL, culminating with 7DMT.

As revenue and attendence grew each year with no capital projects, the Bobs were riding high, until finally it was realized "hey, maybe we need to finally spend money again in domestic P&R instead of overseas"

This is just the beginning of 10+ years of seeing A LOT of go-away-green scrims and closures. By 2030, the parks will be a lot different. There are so many projects in the works that haven't been released yet, and we will have many D23s to hear about these.

Push up on your lap bars, it's going to be a rough ride for awhile, but well needed!

...there’s really no way to build out of view at this point

100% perfectly said.

Bob “coppertone” iger...world’s greatest executive ever...did absolutely nothing other than increase prices for 10 years.

At least not to what that compound needed.

What did they really do? A couple of clones and rearranged fantasyland.

Now the bill comes due...cranes in the background of the tinker bell pictures

Yeah, but also like a Rubik's cube -- how many people gonna just look at the mess, put it down, and walk away?

I'll take the construction if it means things are improving. If they keep up the new ideas and landscapes and attractions, its well worth seeing some cranes or walls. I love coming down to Disney every few years and seeing the results of all the prior trips construction. I think it's really cool.

I have no problem with any visible construction at WDW-with the exception of the crane that spends the first few months of the year joined at the hip with the castle at MK. My 2 WDW visits before the last one last fall were in March, so the crane was there both times. I was starting to think it was a new attraction-Tinkerbell's Magical Pixie Dust Flyer, or something :D It was kind of nice seeing the castle during our last visit without the crane. Not saying the crane ruined our vacation or anything, it was just a case of "MSUSA and the castle look great-but would look better without the crane."

You have to build and remodel to have new things. Its simple. It sucks, but unless you want a park frozen in time, you have to deal with the construction. No fun, but an inevitable thing. If its that concerning, find another vacation spot for a few years.

I could understand why some people may be irrated though. Its NOT like WDW advertises this with their admission. Sure its 110 (or whatever nowdays), but one park is a half day park currently, and two of the three others have some major construction projects going on also. Soo .. someone forks over the dough for a family of 4, expecting it to be like it was ten years ago with nothing really going on. They show up, and its a poop show of construction, at nearly every park. Yea, they will feel a bit jaded.
