Too Many Threads! Any Thoughts???

It seems that as WDWMagic becomes more and more popular that the site is getting overwhelmed with new threads. While it seems that every topic gets discussed here (and that is generally a good thing) it keeps threads from getting discussed properly because there are so many new threads started. I usually start one a month or so.

Does anyone else notice this?

I was thinking it might help if only Premium Members and Moderators could have the option of starting threads. It add one more motivation for people to become paying members. Just a thought for Steve and his crew. Anyone else have thoughts on the subject?

I do not have a problem with the number of threads, and I do not find them overwhelming. I only read and post in threads that interest me.

And I disagree stongly with the suggestion of only allowing premium members and moderators to start threads. One of the reasons I love this site so much is because I learn something new about Disney everyday.....as a direct result of people starting threads on various topics. To limit this would defeat the purpose of this site, in my opinion.

I don't think limiting who can start threads would help much [other than increasing revenue for Steve, which wouldn't be a bad thing].

I find using the "New Posts" feature and scanning titles gets me most of what interests me. Yes, the posts with un-informative titles like "Help" or "Would you...?" tend to get skipped, but that's the poster's fault. If you limit who can start threads, you just alienate new members who have simple questions but haven't mastered the search function or just don't really know how to phrase their question to get the answer they need.

You've got that exclusive piece of Disney Information that you're dying to share with the world - why should you pay to join this site (or any other) in order to share your news ?

Or, You're a first time visitor to WDW wanting help and advice - why should you pay to ask for help ?

The simple solution is to view New Threads on a more regular basis and for those who want to share news or ask questions to Search the site first - most question-asking-threads have already been answered (Dining Plan, Strollers at WDW etc etc)

As long as new visitors continue to visit the site, advertisers will be willing to pay Steve to promote their services on here

I don't believe that there are too many threads. What IS an annoyance to me is that many people are starting new threads that are very simliar (or exactly the same) as threads that are current or recently current. People should check first to see if there is their desired topic is being discussed already.
I don't think only paying members should be able to start threads.

Restricting the posting of new threads to certain members does not seem very productive when trying to have healthy discussions. And the "News and Rumors" and "General Discussion" forums may move quickly, but there are many forums that have a much slower pace, and would actually be detrimental if these kinds of restrictions were put in place. The general member, for instance, could not get the information they need about the DVC, or ways to get a Disney job, or let everyone know about a cool new WDW game. I would imagine a lot more thread derailment would go on, as non-Premium members would have to start posting their questions in other threads as they can't create their own.

Also, these forums do not move prohibitively fast compared to others I've been on. Even then, thread subscriptions are handy especially when posting in the various forums on this site.

So... let me get this straight: You started a thread to complain that there were too many threads? The irony is staggering. ;)

I think that new members shouldn't be allowed to start more than one thread a month until they reach 100 posts and get a feel for the site.

No offense, but I would be offended if being able to start new threads was locked to just premium members. Sometimes I or other "guest members" have legit questions or news to post. I personally don't see any benefit in paying to beocome a premium member, which is why I am not one...and by doing something like that, I would feel like the "premium members" don't want the "guest members" on this site.

So if they were to take your suggestion, I would just find a new site to post on...there are plenty out there...true this one might be the best...but I guess I would have to makedo...sorry.

As a non premium member or moderator I would probably leave the site if I couldn't start a thread. There are many people out there who find this site when starting their research for their upcoming WDW visit. I'm sure a lot of our questions seem monotonous and old because you see hundreds of them, but to us they are brand new.

Yes I know how to use the search button, and I'm sure plenty of others do to, but sometimes the questions asked don't really answer what we want to know. Also, unless you look closely at the date of the post, the given information could not be correct anymore. The best way to get current information is to ask the question now rather than search for the question that could be months or years old.

It's just my humble opinion that if you close the ability to start a thread then you are effectively telling people that they are not welcome here to ask questions and get answers.

There is no possibility of the ability to start a thread being removed for any users.

I dont see a problem with the number of threads, it's just the way things will be with almnost 60,000 members. You always have the ability to ignore the ones you are not interested in, it isnt the case that you must read every thread.

Hey, just trying to help. By all means, whatever is best for your site is what you should do. Thought I had a good idea for you but guess not. Now back to posting.

My only problem with all the threads is that there can be, at times, too many on the same subject. A quick search before starting a new thread may solve that, but removing the ability to start a thread kinda goes against the whole discussion board theme.

Perhaps some thread merging could be in order at times.

I picked up on that one as well.

As for paying for the ability to post-Never.To me a forum that does that is "holier than thou" and very pretentious.I agree with the Premier Member system as people that sponsor the sight should get some bonuses.Steve has made a wonderful site here thankfully for everyone.
