I am contemplating a visit to the Kona Cafe for my August 2013 trip (I just got back from my August 2012 trip but you cant plan to early I guess :) ) to try the famous tonga toast. I have a peanut allergy and have had it my whole life. I know tonga toast has bread (obviously) and most breads at Disney come from the outside and there's no guarantee that it has no traces of nuts so does anyone have info on this? A link with allergy info, past experiences, ect. All answers are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't know if they use the same bread in the Tonga Toast as they do in the Banana Bread Pudding at 'Ohana but my daughter got very ill from eating the banana bread one. We had the chef come over and everything and they assured us we would be fine. She has tree nut allergies and peanut allergies and most restaurants do their best to help but like you said, you never know when they get the products from outside. I would be cautious but don't let it ruin your trip. Sometimes it's not even the bread itself but the ingredients touching other ones in the back when they are being prepared. Just make sure to tell the chef when you get there. If you have an ADR at Kona, call or go online and specify the allergy so the hostess will make a note of it on your reservation.

The chefs can be strange. One chef came out saying the banana bread dessert was ok for me to eat, then another chef came out to bring it and I asked him just to confirm its ok for me to eat and he said that I couldn't. Very weird...

DD6 is peanut & tree nut allergic. We were not allowed to have any of the breads at 'Ohana dinner or breakfast; however, they let us have the bread pudding when we dined there last August. That being said, I have not heard of anyone having any allergy restrictions or issues with Tonga Toast. Granted, Kona serves a number of things that present very serious allergy risks, so it's imperative that the allergies are noted on any ADR just to eliminate cross contamination risk in prep area. Still, you might want to call ahead and see if any of them can confirm if the sourdough bread used to create it are nut allergen risk free. Not sure if special diets or maybe just calling the Poly might do the trick...since Captain Cooks' bread is likely the same. I just would want to know before heading to the World if I could actually eat it- since I'd probably choose to dine somewhere else if not.
