Toll Road Cost

How much are the current tolls from the Orlando airport to WDW? We usually go ME but this trip are renting a car. Just want to have enough change ready. THANK YOU!

I'd suggest you call the rental company, tell them what happened, and ask them what you should do. I'd do it sooner than later. I don't know how it works with a rental car (it seems to vary with the company), but I know for personal vehicles the expressway authority treats you differently if you self-report as opposed to waiting for a citation. If they hear it from you before they hear it from the expressway authority they might be willing to give you better terms than if it happens the other way around.

And the sooner the better. By the time the Sunpass gets it to the rental company and they find you and mail it out to you, there will be additional penalties added to the bill.

I suggest taking the south exit out of the airport and taking 417 toward Disney. A couple miles longer? Yes. But traffic is more reliable. Taking 528 to 4 from the north end of the airport can be a bad choice depending on the time of day. Anyhow, get on 417 at the airport (Boggy Creek Rd) and take exit #6 International Dr/World Center Dr. The signs say to go this route for Epcot/DTD, but it works for all Disney destinations. You will go through two toll plazas this route, but both are staffed mainline plazas that have at least one lane where they take cash and supply change. Total charge of $3. If you get off at other exits, you will need some coins. Continue straight on World Center Dr/SR-536 (bit of a traffic jam during holiday periods where it crosses SR-535) and it will take you onto WDW property.

About rental cars... most are equipped with an electronic toll device provided by a third party vendor (hence the service charges). These devices are not an Opt In/Out choice at the rental counter, but are activated for the duration of your rental the first time you drive through any lane marked "SunPass ONLY" or "E-Pass ONLY". You will not get a ticket, but you will have to pay whatever the charge is for using the electronic toll vendor, usually a daily service charge plus actual tolls. The daily service charge is indeed a rip off by these toll vendors, but most of the programs max out the daily fees at $15-$25 per rental period. For the person who accidentally drove through the toll lane, check your rental documents. Chances are you have a bill coming from the rental company, but not a ticket from the state. If you are planning to pay by cash, watch the signs as the toll plazas are on a side spur off the highway. Otherwise tolls are collected electronically at 70mph on the through lanes on this stretch of highway.

If you are the type of person who comes to Florida every year and does a ton of driving around on toll roads, you can purchase your own SunPass transponder at any Publix or Walgreens (about $20 for the device, then activate and load value online). Then when you rent a car, install the device and go into your online account and associate the license tag number. This should allow you to use the SunPass/E-Pass lanes without triggering the rental company's toll service. But remember to take your device and disassociate the plate number when you return the car!
