To drive or to fly?

Hi all!

Ok so i guess this is more of a Jersey question, but which do you prefer flying or driving? My best friend and I are dropping the husbands and heading down for a week in november. We can't decided if we should fly or drive.

Any thoughts? Any special routes you guys takes or stops along the way?

Thanks!

Driving to WDW was one of the worst experiences of my life, but that was because we had five girls in one car, and two of them were spoiled, selfish brats, and one was a huge...well, you know.

A DVD player helps, but we drove 24 hours straight instead of stopping. I know, stupid. I bet if you stop, and if you and your friend don't think you'll hate eachother after a 24 hour car ride together, go nuts.

But also remember that after all your fun, it's another loooong trip back if you drive. ;)

I live in Jersey and I always fly, its not that much for a round trip, if u go for a week your going to have to take 4 days 2 down and 2 up so that only leaves you with 3 days in the parks. If you fly get a morning flight so you can check in the hotel, give your bags to the hotel and they will put them in your room for you, then go hit the parks, thats what i always do i usualy get to the hotel around 12 in the afternoon....

My opinon 3 days in the parks is not worth it at all.. you might want to think about that...

Have funn on your trip <fieldset id="vB_Editor_001_smiliebox" title="Smilies"><legend>Smilies</legend> <table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr align="center" valign="bottom"> <td>

Unless someone is petrified of flying to the point of histerics then that's the way to go. Why waste two days on the road when they can be spent in the parks?

Heck, even I fly and I only live 4 hours away from WDW!

Of course, we drive plenty too but when airfare gets real cheap, it is very hard to say no to. (Try Southwest, I use them all the time.) As a matter of fact, I'm flying up early on Sunday morning only to fly right back at the end of the night. That way I get to hit the parks and sleep in my own bed. Great way to get a quickie trip in!

I absolutely hate to fly and have decided the next time we go I will bite the bullet and fly. From Chicago it is only a little over 2 hours vs. a day and a half in the car. The car ride is enjoyable, but if I have only a week to spare I would fly. Also by the time you get there you will be very tired unless maybe you are used to driving for very long periods without rest, but for me it makes me very sleepy. Also as someone else said, the ride back is painful as the excitement of the trip is over.

Didnt do the math yet but from the other post I would say

Flying 90% Driving 10%

And I agree, although we are in D.C. (we do have a condo in OC,NJ ! - so I though that would quailfy me to answer.) We can usually find great low fares with Southwest and Airtran. We are lucky to have several major airports around us and can always find airfair that just doesnt make driving an option.

For 2 people for only one week there is no other choice.

There are only 2 of us and we can squeeze in a couple of 5 day trips to WDW each year because a 2 hour flight still gives you that entire travel day to spend at the parks.

Have fun!

Drive to the airport, then get on the plane and enjoy!!!!! We have an airport here that is so much smaller than the two majors and you can just leave the car with no problems. In a couple of hours, you're looking at palm trees!

You should be able to get a really great deal on airfare in November, no?

Have a wonderful time.

I'd go with fly, but that's just my opinion. IMO you waste vacation driving, unless you have the time and plan on stopping to sightsee along the way. Personally, I'd probably inflict bodily harm on myself and anyone else with me if I had to be in a car for 22 hours  Definitely does not work for me!

This was a useful post. As my name implies I live 800 miles from the Magic. From the door of my house to the gate of the park almost always works out to 800 miles and I have always driven. Same senario as an earlier post, I get up a 3 am and hit Orlando just after rush hour, If I am staying on site I am in my room by 8pm. I spend the last day in the park, longer than I should, hit the road, spend the night in South Carolina and arrive home around dinner the next day.

After reading this post I checked some prices on plane tix, and its by far cheaper for me to fly. Southwest runs a direct flight from my closest airport, for around 250 dollars per person I can be in the parks by 1pm. That's a no brainer.

Also, if your a first time visitor and plan on seeing Disney Quest your last day, and know you have to drive home afterwards DON'T. Disney Quest, to a true die hard, has a casino like quality to it. No windows, No Clocks, exciting sounds. Nothing is worse than rolling in at 12 pm only to walk outside and find it dark outside knowing you have a 10 plus hour car ride ahead of you.:D

I always have to drive from Central Illinois all the way to Disney. We make a few stops in between at the ocean and in Georgia, but in the words of Clark Griswold, "the trip is half the fun."

We drive, mostly because I have a fear of flying, but we also love having our our vehicle on site, were not limited to how much we bring with us or how much we buy and have to get home. Also, a big thing for us is the ability to control just when we have to leave. When we finally do leave, it's on our terms when we're ready to go, on our schedule.

I will be flying (with the help of a prescription) for a shorter trip later this year, so I see the time benefit, believe me.

I think after that, if the drugs help, we'll split how we do it!

Also, check flights out of Atlantic City airport, its alot less hectic than Newark. We usually fly on Spirit Airlines, not too expensive and has flights directly to Orlando International

It takes us 18-23 hours, depending on traffic from NY. With six of us, it is a big savings on the airfare and we get to leave when we want. The time and expense getting to the airport is as much as hassle as getting four children on the plane. While I don't hate flying, it is nice to have our car on property when we get to Disney. It is all a matter of persaonal choice and the fact that we have two drivers. It works for us.
