Tips

I am going to be staying at the AKL in a couple of weeks and I have a question I have not seen on these boards. I am wondering about tips, when and how much? I have stayed at Value and Moderate resorts but never at luxery so I was wondering what is standard at this resort. I don't want to offend anyone.

I always leave a daily tip for the housekeeping staff, usually $1 per person in the room.

I've NEVER had occasion to tip the bell staff, since my husband would rather have a root canal without novocaine than PAY someone else to haul our bags!

Hey Nanasfan, the Fannie May thing must be in the water or something! My mom is the same way, funny though a friend from California heard her talking..thought she was wanting us to get her a mortgage!

Figmentmom I think my husband must share the same DNA with your husband! same thing here, you bring it, you carry it (unless your under 3~)

See thats the part I have a problem with.
five of us @ a $1 per day = $5
length of stay =21 days 5x 21 = $115 in tips just for housekeeping.

Now if it were per adult that would be more acceptable.

So just leave what you feel comfortable, like a $20.

Now not everyone tips and not everyone can afford to tip housekeeping. I will when i can, however if it comes between that last souviner or tipping the maid, well.... call me selfish but the maid is going to get the short end of the stick on that one.

I have real hard time tipping housekeeping. My room does not get dirty enough to justify cleaning every day. I can make my own bed. I can hang up the towels. I can even wipe down the counters and tables. If i need additional towels, i make a call to the front desk. Is it really necessary for them to clean everyday? We are only in our rooms for 8 to 10 hours. I will still tip at the end based upon the type of service.

Tipping, is defiantly an American thing, I have never (or my family) have ever tipped housekeeping staff in any country, and to be honest, it has never crossed my mind.

Waiting staff will get a tip if they deserve it, I have done restaurant work, I know what good service is, my relatives who live in the US feel they MUST tip 20% each time in a restaurant, I don't. It really annoys me when there are signs reminding you to tip or “service not included”, or even worse, when it is added to a bill as a service charge or gratuity.... This to me encourages staff not to work hard. I will base my tip on the service speed, quality, friendliness and helpfulness. I always feel sorry for back of house staff, I'm sure in many cases their wage is crap, but they won’t usually get tips.

From what I gather, waiting staff generally are lower paid in the US and rely on tips. Here, we pay a wage that is better….. I don’t know if this is the case or not.
