Tipping for Housekeeping

I was wondering if anyone else tipped for maid services and what you tipped, as well as did they clean your room. I actually stayed at the Boardwalk, and was under the belief that our room would be cleaned (beds made for example) once for the week we were there. On the day it was supposed to happen, I left a tip on the dresser with the note "For Housekeeping. Thank you." I got back to the room later that day and the beds were not made and the room didn't look particularly clean. Oh.....and the tip was gone. However, housekeeping did leave fresh towels. Huh?? Is this normal service now? I've stayed at many a hotel and always tip housekeeping every day that I know they clean the rooms. Anybody else have the same experience??

Last year we stayed at the BC for 14 nights. Each and every day, I left a tip for our mousekeeper. Everynight for the first week we got a nice welcome home surprise...with my kids stuffed dolls. Very cute. On our last week, I noticed it was getting less and less, and the cleaning was getting worse and worse. Though, I have to concead that after staying in a room for 14 nights...it gets to be a bit crowded with items purchased, and of course clothes and dirty laundry. (I dont do laundry on vacation-unless ABSOLUTLY necessary-i.e no more underware!) So, I can understand she can only do so much...I continued to tip $5.00 per day (4 in a room) ... with the hidious mess we left everyday...she DESERVES it!

In October though (3 night visit) the cleaning was less than par. Only 2 were in the room and we got not so good cleaning. I didnt complain, cause we were there only 3 nights...but If it were a longer stay, you betcha I would of said at least something..not so much to the managment but the mousekeeper herself. As to not get her in trouble.

Keep up the good work Mousekeepers!!! Without you it wouldnt be a complete "vacation" for me! Cause I would have to clean up after my kids filth day in and day out .....still!

Are mopst people leaving a tip every day? My understanding was that for housekeeping you would only leave a tip at the end of the stay, and usually it was only if the service was better than normal, and usually about $5 for a weekend stay. Has it gone up much since I last checked?

When I've stayed at hotels and resorts, I generally leave a tip a day because I never know who is cleaning my room, and whether they'll be cleaning it all week.

On the first day of our 1 week vacation (two weeks ago) we arrived at our room to a small Housekeeing card with our Mousekeeper's name on it with the usual "Hi my name is ... if you need any assistance then please call...". I am pretty sure we had the same lady the whole week because she would place her card on top of the towels each day.

Prior to leaving any tip I waited to see what the service would be like. Before we left our room each morning we made sure it was pretty tidy so that none of our stuff would be in her way while she did her cleaning routine (no clothing or trash lying around, and no junk on the beds). And we always zip up all the luggage bags before heading out for the day.

The first cleaning was standard service. She made the beds, changed the towels, and emptied the trash. I imagine it took her less than 5 minutes.

The next day she arranged the kids stuffed animals on the beds. That was extra so we left a thank-you note "for yesterday's excellent service" and a tip. The same for the following day after that. But then it stopped for the rest of the week. One day she didn't get to our room until after 2pm which was a little wierd because she was normally there by just after 9am. She must have been extra busy that day.

We then left a "End of Stay" Thank-you tip for the general service. In total we left $15 in tips for the week.

cheers.

I used to travel a great deal in the U.S. and would tip approx. $3 to $5 a day. I may be taking a trip to France on business (Airbus) and am suprised to hear that tipping is not common oversees. Is this true??? Also, is it better to tip in the nations currency you are visiting?

tippimg maids

We recently spent 3 night at POR. I tipped $2 per day (there were 2 of us) and they left very cute creatures made of face clothes and towels, and the room was nicely tidied up.

Hi, I'm from England. Now as I mentioned earlier, up until reading on these boards I would have never have dreamt to tip housekeeping. In the UK I would think that it was practically unheard of. I doubt many people from the UK would tip housekeeping, not because they are tight or rude, just because they don't know its customary. In many holiday brochures it is mentioned about tipping at restaurants. I've not seen it for housekeeping.

In some better restaurants 10% is sometimes a suggested amount, however, many people still won’t leave a tip, and it is also dependant on the service. My family in the US seem to tip more or less compulsively, having worked in the industry; I wouldn't expect a tip for bad service. Some restaurants will add an "optional service charge" of 10-15%, some will add 10-15% for parties over 6. It will say on the menu.

You should tip in the local currency as charges to convert it will devalue whatever you have given as a tip.

Have a great time at Airbus. Are you going to Toulouse? What exactly do you do? I love civil aviation.

More on Housekeeping in the Villas

Housekeeping at the Villas is different for different types of guests: If you are a DVC owner or renting points from a DVC owner, you will only have the minimal trash and towels service 6 days out of 7, and a full cleaning on the 7th day. But if you are a "regular" resort guest, the cost of your stay is supposed to include full cleaning on a daily basis. Even the DVC owners can pay extra to get full cleaning.
