Tipping at Victoria and Albert's

that is exceptional...

That really shows the server had the culinary IQ to understand the importance of having all parties eat at the same time as well as refilling the paired wine.

Also, I agree there has to be dozens of places in NYC where a tasting menu tops $250/person. But to be fair some of those restaurants (Per Se etc.) do not require a tip...service is included

I took a look at the list of expensive restaruants and it seems that wine was left off of most of them. I happen to think that V&A's wine pairings were very well priced. Off the top of my head, it was $60 for 7 pairings when I went (give or take $5) so that is about $8 - $10 a glass. The wines they used would have been $12+ a glass on a lot of menus - if they were even available by the glass. Maybe to to me that is what made me think it was "bargin priced"

When I ate at the chef's table a few years ago, I'd budgeted to tip $100 for the meal.
You have to remember, the service you'll receive here is head and shoulders above 95% of eateries in the country. So is the food. It was recently named the #10 most expensive restaurant in the country, and as an Exec Chef myself, I completely understand why. The ingredients, the preparations, the service, the details are all in a very small league.
Enjoy the coffee. You'll want it every morning for the rest of your life.
Please share the menu and the experience with us when you return.
Bon appetit.

Cite please? I can name a number of restaurants in say a place like Vegas alone that cost more than Victoria and Alberts... and that's not covering any in the other major cities. I'd also dispute that the service is better than 95% of other eateries in the country. To be sure, the service is great! But that's quite the claim. That being said...I do budget about 100 for a tip as well.

EDIT: Opps. Saw you did cite the article. That being said...I'd say that's quite a subjective lists. I'm sure if you asked another site or newspaper to come up with a list like that, there would be varying answers.

Double Edit: I just had a friend who tried Alinea in Chicago. She said it was pretty darn amazing.
