Tip Mouse Keeping?

Hey gang,

I am head out to WDW tomarrow and I am going to be staying on property for the first time. I have a question about tipping. I have always tipped for good service at resterants, bell hop, ect but to be honest I have never left a tip for house keeping at any hotel I have styed at.

My question is, is it bad form to not tip house keeping. Personally I think house keeping is a service that is part of what you are paying for when you stay at a hotel and that basic service is not something you should have to tip. That said I have been known to tip more than the standard amount when I recive awsome service at a resturant for example.

This is the first time I am staying on Disney Property and wanted to see how many of you actully leave a tip for house keeping and if so how much? I am traveling by myself for this trip so any insite you can give me would be great.

Thanks for your help

We are ap holders and I stay on property usually around 5 to 6 times a year. I have never tipped. I feel that it is there job to clean and thats what they are getting paid for. My room always comes out very nice and I always have the towel animals in the room. I spend enough money at Disney World that I feel like I dont have to tip them for doing what they are suppose to be doing.

Well, at the opposite end of the spectrum, we're AP holders as well, and are usually down several times a year also. We realize just how little a lot of people in housekeeping make, and leave at least $5 per day as a tip. I figure between the AP savings, the TiW card, and whatever discounts for rooms we can get, that's not a lot to tip for someone working to make our stay all the more enjoyable....

If someone does decide to tip, say $5 a day or whatever, what is the best way to do this if you leave a tip every day? Do you just leave the money on a desk/bed? Would one bring their own envelopes and put the money in there? Or something else?

Just curious as to how those of you the do leave daily tips go about actually leaving them.

I believe they leave little envelopes in the room for Mousekeeping.....

Just think of it this way....the mousekeepers who clean your room....couldnt afford to visit disney on what they make. Giving them a small tip makes them feel appreciated for what they are paid to do. All of us like to be appreciated at our jobs. Its a way of saying "job well done"

Maybe the tips we leave, allow those mousekeepers to have a nice vacation from making our vacations nice. Sure they are not what we call a "tip based" job...but then again they are the ones changeing the sheets and cleaning our toilets, picking up our used towels etc. IMHO anyone who does that for a living deserves s little something more then $8/hr and a thank you.

They do not leave envelopes in the rooms at Disney resorts. The most you'd have is a little card with your housekeeper's name on it welcoming you to the resort.
Many people who tip bring small envelopes (sometimes decorated beforehand) to put the money in and leave it on the sink or bedside table.
Housekeeping will not just take random money left out on the table assuming it's a tip meant for them.

Also, I've heard (but have no "official" confirmation) that Disney policy is that housekeepers who receive tips/gifts are supposed to turn them into management. Management then keeps it, and when there's enough built up, uses the money to throw some kind of a party for the full housekeeping staff.

I make envelopes with the money in it before I leave home. That way I have all the tips separated and not have to worry about having some ones handy. I just write mousekeeping on the outside and leave it on the table in the room by their name card. I leave 3 dollars a day. We keep the room fairly clean. I pick up our wet towels and make sure our clothes aren't laying all around. Being in housekeeping or mousekeeping is a hard job. And they have always done a good job for us. When my daughter was younger she brought every stuffed Disney thing she had. We came back one night from the parks and some were having a little picnic on the bed with some towel animals and others were arranged in our window. My daughter was so excited, she just knew they only did that for her. I would like to think they would do a good job without getting a tip, but I sure as heck don't want to find out.

Not going to join the tip-vs-no-tip debate, but thought I'd interject a fact...

Housekeeping in the WDW resorts is considered (by Disney) to be a non-tipped position, and their hourly wage reflects that. (Unlike waitstaff, who are a tipped position, and get a smaller hourly wage because of it)

I was about to say this before i read your post!

I know someone mentioned that the money might have to be handed to the Management team who then decide what to do with it. A little side note (although please note that this does not necessarily apply to all such establishments)... I used to work in a major coffee store chain in the UK (NOT STARBUCKS!!! lol) where they leave a coffee cup by the till for "tips". These tips were supposedly collected up by management to buy us a post-staff meeting drink etc. This DID NOT happen! Once i found that out not only did I stop leaving tips in such places but also while I was working there hated the fact that people were leaving the money because it probably would have been of more use remaining in their pocket. Food for thought.

We always leave a daily tip for the maid. Usually $1 per person, and there are 4 of us. We always leave a small one every day to avoid giving one large tip to someone who hasn't set foot in our room before.

During a summer in college, I was a maid at a local resort hotel. Honestly, it was great when someone left me a tip, and maybe I was encouraged to go a little beyond for them. Ironically, my best tip ever was $20 and they left me Mickey ears:D.

Maybe I should start to tip transportation staff to help ensure a safe journey on the buses.

LOL!!!!!

I didn't tip for years and then I realized these people only start at around $7.50 an hour to clean our toilets...and whatever else people leave behind in their rooms....ew....they deserve a tip!
