I found the article interesting for his critiques of how they run things…I’m not really saying what he’s produced is great

But you need some other ideas in Hollywood. Especially Disney.

They’re so focused on their own name brands that they’re strangling those off slowly

Iger. Full blame

Not saying he isn't wrong in some respects, but he also has to realize that most of the majors in Hollywood run this way. The type of movie he wants to make, quirky and offbeat, is less likely to be made in today's Hollywood let alone at Disney. That is why is he better off at a place like Netflix or an independent studio like A24.

I’m sure he’d say it’s becoming “creatively void”…and that argument has merit.

Because the studios are run that way…doesn’t ensure they are being run correctly

Well this again is where he is better off at a Netflix or independent.

Believe it or not its ok that the majors go after the more blockbuster tentpole films and the independents and Netflix go after the more artsy, weird, offbeat type movies that he likes to make. It means more content for us the consumer, which is always a good thing.

I mean, he isn't wrong.
He really isn’t…but…still…

Look at what Disney is doing (threads on this subforum)…Their out on the “fringes” of marvel (as he points out in the article) and mining that like dwarves

And I see “next likely Star Wars film” popped up again …
Names of random Directors that fit NOTHING…no stories, no ideas…just names and more time killed.

So if it’s ok (like it or not) for the studios to build tent poles…then perhaps get your $&?! Together?

Just a thought. I’m demanding (like the mass crowds)

Tim Burton should do another super hero film. Seems like DC could use some help.
The problem is Burton doesn't like to make franchises because it requires too much studio involvement. He has been vocal about this long before this article came out. There is a reason he hasn't touched another super hero franchise since he tried to make Superman Lives.

He wants to make quirky, weird, offbeat, artsy films with no studio involvement. This again is why a place like Netflix or an independent studio like A24 is where he belongs, as they don't get involved in anything. But its also why you get series like Sandman with big budgets but not much mass appeal, so little that it fails to get a 2nd season.

I do suspect he's got a point. Certainly, Disney+'s new content is largely uninteresting for me as someone who is indifferent to the Marvel and Star Wars franchises as all they seem able to do is mine them for new content. I still get more value out of Netflix because they at least have some interesting and surprising documentaries or series that pop up fairly regularly.

As for Tim Burton, I will admit that I am also not a super fan of his style and tend to be more reticent than excited to see a film if I see he's the director. Dumbo was flat out awful, IMO, and I kind of think Alice was so successful more on the basis of the strength of the concept and style than the quality of the filmmaking. Still, a hit is a hit. I tend to agree that he probably fits better at smaller studios that will allow him to do what he wants than larger studios, particularly as film revenues seem to be sinking lower and lower and I suspect major studios will become more reticent to take risks on smaller, off-beat films. Would also be a little mystified if Disney enlisted Burton to direct a Marvel or Star Wars film.

Something is terribly wrong in Hollywood. This is a pretty big example of that

Batman…Superman…Wonder Woman…

How hard is it really to make a decent movie that is neither stupid nor dumbfoundingly bad?

Apparently, it's REALLY difficult. And when they do, it's as though it was by accident and they have no idea what made it successful and there's nothing to learn that might help them ever do it again.
