Tier 1 -2 -3

The difference in tiers is the price of the restaurant. Those who pay for tier 3 (most expensive) stand in the same line as those who choose tier one. The line is first come, first in line, with those who have the dinner plan in a DIFFERENT line than those who walk-up. The dinner plan people are seated first. My family and I have been both a walk-up and a dinner plan. The dinner made the night more enjoyable.

There are no "reserved" seats with the Dinner Package - you just get seated before those in the stand by line - first come, first served

^^ that was not the case when we were there last year?? We ate at the coral reef and walked up literally 5 minutes before the show began, handed the CM at CP our voucher they gave us at the rest. and they walked us to area right in the front???

Was the rest of the theatre full or empty ??

We were there December 27th for the second performance. We arrived about 30 mins before showtime and stood in a line probably 50yds long (on the UK side of EPCOT) before filing into the theatre and grabbing our own seating. The line on the other side (Germany/Italy) was equally as long (None Dinner Package) - I don't know how many got into the performance

That's because those were the only seats left when you arrived. I was there last year and did the Candlelight Processional dinner package and was at a Tier 2 restaurant and was near the front of the line and got to sit pretty much anywhere I wanted when they let us in so we opted to sit about 1/3 of the way back from the stage so we didn't have to look 'up' at the stage.

The Tier affects only the price at the restaurant and not where you sit.

My problem with the tier thing is that some simple (to me) restaurants are listed in the top tier. Not logical.

If we are going the first week of December, should the crowds be light enough to get in without the dinner package? We are on the Disney Dining Plan and hate to waste 2 table service meals if we can get in without it.

I would not count on it. A few years ago you could but I have seen the standby line stretch as far as Germany in early December. If you must do it you will need to get the dining package. If you could take it or leave it the you could give stand by a shot but an hour plus wait is not uncommon.

We were there the first week of December last year and we were walking by the standby line at 2 in the afternoon and they were already starting to line up for the 5pm showing. If you want to guarantee yourself a seat, get the package. If you don't want to use 2 credits the pay for it out of pocket and use the credits for something else, that's what we're doing.
