Just wondering if anyone else was watching. The Air Show is truly the greatest int he country ever. The KC-10 refueler just finished up and Lima Lima aerobatics team is out now. Too bad I didnt get to go to see it in person this year.

Haha nice. What team is that?

We had the F-22 Raptor the last two years but it wont be here this year. We did manage to bring back the MV-22 Osprey. Its the one built as helicopter/airplane with a tilt rotor in the wings to lift off as a helicopter and then tilts forward to fly like a airplane.

Fireworks, that are arguable in one of the best in the nation if you dont count Disney's, start at 9:30.

Its the Red Arrows of the RAF. Used to see them and the harrier G3 display doing the early season run ups. Had a couple of colleagues who did tours as the official photographer. Not for me, I'm not that keen on flying. :lookaroun

Dint an Osprey go in in Afghanistan recently?

I thought the logo seemed familiar but wasnt sure. I thought for some reasont hey had changed since WWII. I take it the Red Arrows are the equivalent of the Blue Angels in the US Navy?

I beleive they did. Used in Operation Cobra's Anger to assist in deploying 1,000 US Marines and Afghan Soldiers into Helmand province to disrupt supply lines and communication to the Taliban. Theres been a few issues with them crashing but what can you expect, its almost a experiment witht he tilt-rotor design. They are one of the most awesome planes I've ever seen.

Yes the Arrows are very similar. Though to be honest if it wasnt for commercial sponsorship I'm sure they'd have been cut to save money buy now, not a problem the US navy is likely to encounter.

You must live near another poster as they were mentioning the noise from an airshow (unless of course there are two major airshows this weekend in the us)

Ive seen a few from my area of the states. This is the only one that I know of though.

I used to live in the flight path of planes flying over to the show in the past and you dont hear them coming until they're right on top of you and you hear the boom.

RAF does have alot of planes that I would say are pretty good, liek the Typhoon and the Tornado. Yet to see those in person.

The Tornado is a plane I hate, it entered service about the same time I did. The F3 has always been a bit of an egg and the reconnaissance variant a complete waste of space. Always thought it lacked the elegance of the aircraft it eventually replaced.

I was always a fan of the navy cast off the Buccaneer, the RAF used to fly it very low level, very fast. And of course the mighty Jaguar.
Did a few exercises with the Tomcat and A10s.

Ahh the F-14 Tomcats :) Sad to see them get retired, great airplane that could really be in service today. I mean it could engage 6 different airplanes at once and it looks beautiful to say the least.

On the A-10's, they're really the most survivable of any aircraft I believe. Somehow after taking a beating they still manage to fly back to base even if its missing big chunks of the wings and fuselage.

You havent happened to see the new F-22 Raptor or the F-35 JSF have you? Raptor is the latest stealth air-to-air fighter and the JSF is the air-to-ground with a built in air turbine to VTOL as well as STOL. If I had a pick, I would definitely take the Raptor for its looks and capabilities. JSF looks sort of fat if you ask me.

The Thunderbirds were recently here for a weekend show. It was truly spectacular watching them rehearse for several days prior to the event. I guess they have to get used to the airspace at every event.

Thunderbirds are pretty good, I'm surprised we haven't gotten them in the air show yet. I'm just wondering if they're going to replace their Falcons or keep them even though the USAF is working on a plan to stop operating them. If they do they should get a few Raptors.

Have you ever seen the Blue Angels by any chance?

No most of these aircraft were operating in places I wasnt. Used to see the U2 fairly often (well several times a day) when they were based at Alconbury and a Blackbird or two. Because of the job I did the aircraft variety Id encounter was always pretty restricted . Which is why Id see the two Ive just mentioned as well as F16s (Belgian /Dutch) and the Jag/Harrier as well as the old lady the Canberra. I think this F35 is in the role now as well as all the drone generation, which I think are excellent.

U2's and Blackbirds are some of my favorite. Particuarly the Blackbird with its extreme speed. Its almost unthinkable a plane could be built to do that with the technology being so limited when it was made. Mach 3 in 1966 even though the jet was pioneered in 1944. Looks like we've seen the end of these types of planes I guess.

Every so often some interesting aircraft fly overhead here. Last year on 3 seperate occasions I saw a pair of A-10s over my yard, a B-17, yes a B-17, a couple of miles from my house and then 2 V-22s along with 4 Harriers in the same area as the B-17.

I remember seeing several years ago a KC-10 refueling 2 F-16s near my house as well.

An oh yea, I saw President Bush arrive on Marine 1 in NY harbor along with escort helos for officials/press.

Pretty exciting if you ask me since I'm not very close to any airbase.

I'd really like to go see the Blue Angels at the Jones Beach air show. The Thunderbirds are a fine group as well but I hope they do not get F-22s. Those things are in very short supply and are needed elsewhere.

Unfortunately you're right. What this country did 40-50 years ago will never happen again. Even what we do have today is going down the drain pretty quickly.

I really love the Raptors but they canceled the orders recently for more. All the money for their orders got diverted to the JSF since its a multi-role fighter and the Raptor is a air-to-air mostly plane which we rarely have any dogfights lately so it kind of makes sense.

I actually read/watched an interesting bit on the transportation of the president. There is two helicopters that look similar so its meant to confuse anyone trying to attack it. Only when the president is on-board does it become Marine 1. If the VP is on I believe it becomes Marine 2(watched this a year or so ago so it might not be exactly right). I would have loved to see those planes over my front yard though, you should feel lucky about that haha. Especially with a Flying Fortress over your front yard.

Mickey, not to disrespect you in any way, but what have we commented on that we don't know?
