Thoughts on the role of Custodial?

I was accepted in fall 07 for custodial, and had some second thoughts about it before I got there. working custodial isn't going to help your resume much, unless you plan on being a career janitor, but once you get there its probably one of the most relaxed laid back roles a cp can have (and im sure others will agree)

I remember friends and roommates being jealous of my job. for one you can take breaks when you need to, and not have to wait for another cm to relieve you(you can also break for as long as you want, but be careful :-) ) I was able to work a large area of epcot, and work at my own pace, no matter how many guests were there. with that there were so many places I explored backstage that I never would have been able to in a different role. wearing the custodial costume is kind of like wearing an all access badge. people don't question you when they see you in different backstage areas, like they would an attractions or merchandise cm.

the actual job is not so bad. I rarely had to clean protein spills, or anything unpleasant. the worst part of the role was the amount of trash cans one was responsible for. but don't worry, after a few shifts you know how long yu can let it side before u have to empty it. oh, and the amount of walking you'd do in one shift was insane..!

honestly I could go on and on about this role. feel free to pm me if you'd like ;-)
have a magical day!

For those who had this role...

What did you think?

I had custodial Summer 2007 (I worked in the WS at Epcot). It really wasn't that bad. You have a lot of freedom in this role, and a lot of guest interaction. The best part about being at Epcot, was being able to see the different shows in the countries, and Illuminations at night (I love the Holy Grail show and British Invasion in UK, and Off Kilter in Canada).

To me, the worst part was the first few weeks. My feet would feel like they were about to fall off, that's how bad they were hurting. But after awhile, I got used to it and was fine. I was lucky and didn't get streets too often (I was mostly in restrooms), so I didn't have too many garbages to worry about. And the best part about custodial, is that whenever you visit where you work (if it's a park/DTD), you will never have to worry about having to hunt down a restroom in an emergency.:animwink:

If you have restrooms do you stand in there all day or can you leave?

I was not a custodial cp but i had a friend who was and absolutely loved it. He told me this was because he got to interact with many guests and had great stories to tell about the people he had met. Since you are in costume you get asked questions all the time so you definitely have lots of opportunity for guest interaction.

No, you don't have to stay inside the restroom all day (you most likely will have more then 1 restroom to take care of anyway). You just rotate between restrooms, and also get breaks too.

You make sure the floors are clean, make sure everything is stocked (and stock things when needed), empty the garbages, clean things if necessary. It's pretty simple.

I worked Custodial for my Spring 07 CP in Future World at Epcot. It wasn't horrible and we did have a lot of freedom, but it was never really my thing. It also depends on you if you will like it or not, if someone chooses to hate custodial just because they have to clean restrooms and pick up trash they will never be happy in that role. I did meet some good friends due to custodial and was able to eventually transfer and am now a seasonal cast member at Test Track, which I love working at.
