Those Freakin' Stunt Robots

Do you know how many times performances of the "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" musical got cancelled because of performers getting hurt doing stunts much more minor than what this robot is doing?

If you want to see any stunts approaching what you see in the films, performed several times a day, 365 days a year, you'll need technology like this.
I can't see this kind of tech being used in an indoor theater setting. Yet.

If they are integrated into a stunt show, most will not know what is a live actor doing a stunt and what is the robot. Its a magic trick essentially and most won't realize how it is done as they won't be looking for stunt robots.

I kind of assume that once all dressed up the final product you won’t be able to tell if it’s human or bot.

Hmmm, I don't know. The ones they showed on the video just looked like some robot machine that they threw up in the air and it fell down, sometimes awkwardly. One of them had it's knees bent, I think.
The thrill of these shows, IMO, is that Humans are doing these stunts, not machines. Yes, you can throw up a machine and let it fall, but what's the point? These shows were made for talented people to perform. Anyway, that's just my feelings on it.

One of the first results when you type in Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark is all of the injuries. People have fell 20 ft off the sets becasue of that stunts that are performed in the show. It is crazy!
Maybe the show was poorly designed. Cirque du Soleil has featured amazing, dangerous stunt work since the 80's with relatively few injuries. Few would want to see a Circus performed by robots.

The implications of these things in park attractions are obvious. They're basically AA's with a hugely increased range of motion and action. Imagine a Spider Man attraction where Robo-Spidey is scaling a wall or rapidly swinging from point to point overhead. Imagine a Robo-Indy who can dodge blasts from Mara or who can realistically flick his whip at something. A Robo-Lion could leap at your Jungle Cruise boat. Endless possibilities.

I am going to wait to pass total judgement on the stunt robots until we see what they're used for. They certainly are for something Marvel, but exactly what - that's unsure. I like the idea of them being used in a stunt show, but I also like the idea that someone mentioned about these "characters" making appearances throughout Marvel land briefly, like Spidey flying across the street and out of view. Just would add some nice immersion. I am also okay with Disney spending money on Marvel applications. The Marvel series has been wildly successful, and doesn't seem to have as much negative stigma surrounding it such as Star Wars. Not to mention that Marvel brings in the casual person while Star Wars is more divisive - though I love both franchises, my cats name is Rey for goodness sake.

But to get back to the OP point. The money for the stunt robots possibly cut into the development of Pixar Pier. After seeing the impressions from the post on MiceChat, I am disappointed in Disney. It seems to be a rushed project, and even an unfinished rushed project. The still AA, cant even really call them AAs since they don't move! To the tiny details of unmatched paints and incomplete sets. It is disheartening. I also wish that Pixar Pier could have incorporated Coco somehow other than the one chair in Lamplight Lounge. Coco would be a fabulous dark ride through the Land of the Dead. But that's just my opinion. I am still shocked that one of the largest companies in the world, that owns most of the entertainment in the world, still cuts corners on costs when they should spare no expense, but then look at Jurassic Park - that didn't help Hammond :p

Another thing that Disney can do with the robots is making them characters to fly during the firework shows so there is more movement around the castle and not just characters going in a straight line over the fireworks.

All will depend on guest safety issues. Personally, my favorite part of fireworks shows are the fireworks. They can dump everything else, as far as I'm concerned.

This could make my long-held dream of the Rocketeer flying over HollywoodLand a reality.
That would be awesome... but what are the chances of Disney spending one penny on anything that's not connected to a major current hit film. A good reboot could do the trick...

We all know Disney doesn't care about the parks enough to actually bring something that is cutting edge or unique to them. These will likely never come to fruition or be used in movie production since we all know they love their IP movie babies.

This is just the beginning of this tech, as it goes on you won't be able to tell the difference.
