A majority of the plants used in Disney World Resort landscapes are native species. They consult regularly with horticulturists & botanists from several universities and other institutions to select appropriate species.

The Wonderful World of Water ski show took place on the Seven Seas Lagoon at WDW between 1972-1973. Viewed from a "special" vantage point (the grassy hillside between the Magic Kingdom monorail station and the lagoon) shows were offered to guests five times daily.

2010:

Beauty and the Beast: Diamond Edition hits store shelves. This Disney animated classic has been unavailable since 2003 and this Diamond Edition, as standard with Disney vault releases, will only be available for a limited time.

Disney World built the Fairy Tale Wedding Pavilion so that Cinderella Castle is perfectly framed in two views: through the window behind the altar where the couple is married, and through a hedge archway outside the chapel.


2011:

The day after the passing of Steve Jobs, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has both the U.S. and Disney flags fly half staff (mast) for a week in observance of the passing of the Apple Founder and Disney board member.

About 300 Walt Disney World buses transport guests around the Florida resort, making the Walt Disney World fleet the third largest in Florida behind
Miami and Jacksonville!

2010:

Winnie the Pooh makes his digital debut in his first ever puzzle book-based app with the release of the "Winnie the Pooh: What's a Bear to Do?" app, launched this day on the iTunes App Store.

Disney established the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund in 1995, the year Disney's Animal Kingdom was announced. The DWCF is a global awards program to fund nonprofit conservation & wildlife organizations focused on endangered animals and their habitats.

2010:
An event is held in the lobby and courtyard of the Frank G. Wells Building on the Studio Lot to celebrate the work of Disney Legend and archivist Dave Smith.

Smith, who will retire October 15, has been a familiar face at The Walt Disney Company since 1970, collecting, organizing and sharing with colleagues and historians important historical artifacts on behalf

of the Walt Disney Archives.

Disney fans and collectors gather at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club for a free event designed to kick off the second decade of pin trading at Disney World. (Pin trading at Disney, inspired by pin-swapping seen at Olympic Games, began as part of the company’s millennium celebration, originally to last just 15 months.)

Walt Disney World has the largest working wardrobe on Earth with more than 1.5 million operational garments in use and over 7,000 different garment types. In addition there are over 2 million pieces of entertainment costumes. (That's a lot of dry cleaning!)

School (dating back to 1954) in such places as Alvin, Texas;
Anaheim, California; Clinton Township, Michigan; Gates, New

There are over 300 places to dine across Walt Disney World Resort ... which in turn means there are more than 350 chefs on staff!

2010:

Duffy the Disney Bear makes his grand entrance with Mickey Mouse at Epcot.

First hand-sewn by Minnie Mouse as a gift to Mickey, Duffy, dressed like a sailor, was designed to be Mickey’s

companion during his travels. The character has been popular with guests at Tokyo DisneySea theme park.

There is a wind gauge installed in Disney World's Wilderness Lodge's marina. The computer that runs the resort's geyser senses the wind speed for each "eruption" and adjusts the height of the water. This prevents blowing water from hitting the balconies of lake view rooms!

2010:

Two Cast Members are named as the next Walt Disney World ambassadors in a ceremony at the Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle before the theme park opens on this morning. Norman Vossschulte and Jennifer Mason will represent their fellow employees at official Disney World functions for two years.



Disney Legend Dave Smith, the founder and head of the Disney Archives, puts in his final day of work at the Burbank studio. Smith started the archives after being approached by Walt Disney’s family, including Roy O. Disney four years after Walt’s death in 1966, to preserve the history of the company.

In the early 1970s, Disney World had plans to build a Thai style hotel called the Asian Resort. It was to be built about midway between the Magic Kingdom and the Polynesian Resort on the monorail line ... in a spot now occupied by the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa!

the only DisneyQuest in the world. (DisneyQuest Chicago closed in
September 2001.)


2010:
Actor Tom Bosley, best known for portraying Howard Cunningham on the long-running ABC sitcom Happy Days, passes away at age 83 in Palm Springs, California. In 1994, he originated the role of Maurice in the Broadway version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast and in 1976 appeared in the Disney live-action comedy Gus. Bosley was also the voice of Santa Paws for the 2009 Santa Buddies. (Television fans will also remember him from the series Father Dowling Mysteries.)

California to Florida for its "100 Years of Magic" Celebration
at Walt Disney World.

2010:

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!, an all-new animated series featuring the best of the best in the Marvel Universe, premieres on Disney XD. Produced by Marvel Animation, the series stars the world’s greatest heroes — Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, Ant-Man/Giant Man and Wasp — who form the Avengers, a team assembled when the powers of a single hero are not enough to save the world.
2011:

Some of the world's best golfers and celebrity athletes who love golf descend upon Walt Disney World Resort for the last event of the PGA Tour season; the 41st Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. The event tees off on this day at Disney’s Palm and Magnolia golf courses with the celebrity athletes playing with the Tour pros.

Pirates of the Caribbean was never intended to be part of Disney World
out of fear that it would not be exotic enough to Floridians, due to its geographic proximity to the real Caribbean. Instead, planners
intended to build a ride called the Western River Expedition. Designed
by Marc Davis, it would've featured Audio-Animatronic cowboys,
banditos and Native Indians.


2010:

In New York City, Mickey Mouse helps unveil Disney Store's new state-of-the-art

digital billboard in Times Square that will countdown the store's grand opening

celebration on November 9. The 2-story store will be Disney's largest in North America.
1982:

El Río del Tiempo (later known as Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros) is dedicated along with the Mexico Pavilion at the newly-opened EPCOT Center.



2011:

Google celebrates the 100th birthday of Mary Blair with a Doodle honoring the late Disney artist. Google's Doodle for this day features an image of the illustrator as she would have drawn herself, surrounded by the simplistic patterns and shapes that made up her familiar cartoon world.

Dumbo never utters a Single word!

Animator Bill Tytla, known for his sinister characterization of Pinocchio's Stromboli, was the key animator for Dumbo. He based the character's childlike expressions and earnestness on those of his son, Peter.
