There should be a button to "downvote" or silence posts that are off-topic

It would be great if someone could come up with a good method in online forums and message threads like these, where the user community could easily silence those who post off-topic or even nasty comments rather than having to wait on a mod to come clean it up.
I don't know if there's a feature like that available for this board, but it just seems like something that would be helpful.
It would need to weigh the user's points and experience scores and the number of down votes that were clicked.
Optionally, allowing other more experienced members the ability to do this would be ideal.

I like the idea of an off topic button, but only as a nudge to get people back on track, not as a way of silencing people because we all know that would be abused.

I’m as guilty as anyone of straying off topic, if I saw a bunch of “off topic” votes it would be a good reminder to look at the thread title again to make sure my posts were relevant to the topic before hitting post.

No, because it can easily be abused by people who dislike someone else's opinion on a certain subject. It was done all the time in the politics forum.

It already exists, it's called the 'report' button lol
It could be automated with a weighted system.
For example: If 10 people were to click "Off-topic" on a post, then it would disappear and get marked for review by mods.
Or, if it were 10 users with high points or reaction scores were to click it.

They should let the user with the most HaHa reactions be able to delete any post for not being funny.

Yeah, I know the frustration that moderation can be delayed due to people needing to sleep, but I just report off-topic posts (and I'm talking about crazy, totally off topic, provocative off topic posts) and the mods usually send its electrons back into the all-pervasive cosmic electromagnetic field.

I sometimes back track to find the post that started it and report it as 'ground zero' to help them out.
