Trip Report The Worst Week: A December 2013/January 2014 Trip Report! *COMPLETE*

You all know the week I'm talking about.

The week that all the guidebooks and fan sites warn about...the parks are packed, Soarin' hits a 4-hour wait, and there are phase closings left and right. It's the week between Christmas and New Year's - the worst week to go to Disney World.

What kind of idiots would book a trip during this crazy, insane time??

Hi, I'm Shannon. Nice to meet ya.
WnDEdit-387.jpg

See that guy in the picture with me? That's my husband, Will. He's sort of my favorite. :inlove: WDW is my favorite place. :inlove: I like to be in my favorite place with my favorite person. :inlove: :inlove:

But there's a catch. You see, this favorite person of mine is a teacher who coaches tennis. So for all of you that smugly say stuff along the lines of, "why not go during off-peak times," (is there even such a thing anymore?!) well, some of us can't. Seriously, like we wouldn't rather go during some random week in February or whatever??? In our case, it's summer or Christmastime for a longer trip. Those are the only options.*

We did the summer thing in June of 2011. It was hot and crowded, and Will swore we'd never do it again. The heat and humidity were too much. I agreed and set my sites on Christmas 2013 pretty much as soon as we got home from that hot, sticky trip. Yep, this trip had been planned (or at least thought about) for about 2.5 years! I'm ridiculous.

But this is where my crazy OCD planning began to shine. Right at the 11-month mark I had our resort reservation secured - no discounts are ever out for that time of year, but I was able to rent DVC points, which saved a RIDICULOUS chunk of change. We still had our APs and Tables in Wonderland card from earlier in the year, we booked flights on rewards points, and thanks to saving up our points on our Disney Visa we had just about enough rewards dollars to cover our food for the week. So as far as Disney trips go, this one was relatively cheap. And I of course woke up early at our 180-day mark to make reservations (19 ADRs! But would we keep them?! o_O) and grabbed some FP+ reservations at the 60-day mark or whatever. I also pored over the few Christmas-week trip reports on this and other Disney boards from fellow *idiots* like me, which were pretty hard to find...because most threads started with someone asking about traveling during this week didn't have actual USEFUL information, just snide replies along the lines of "cancel and book another week."* Um, thanks?

ANYWAY...I planned for and thought about this trip more than any other trip we've taken, and that's really saying something. But I'd say it paid off overall. :)

*Yes, I'm a little bitter about it. It just got really old to read how stupid people are for going during this time over and over. I promise the rest of the report won't be like this! Let's be friends? :geek:

LOVE Garden Grill! The food there was super yummy and the character interaction we had was great! I have such an awesome picture of Ashley and one of the munks that will be in my cruise TR! It definitely is expensive but the food there is yummy. Better than most other buffet character meals. And the dessert... ZOMG! Delish!!

Mine is SupersonicSNJ and I only have 2 pics up so far and I think I signed up last month. Totally pathetic. Mine will probably be dogs, cats, horses and Disney mostly lol!
Yay, a new Instagram friend!! :) I like your pup!
I'm loving your report so far, please keep posting :)
I'm a huge fan of AKL, I wish I could stay there more. And I've never eaten at Garden Grill, maybe I'll have to make room for it on my next trip!
Thank you! We became huge fans of AKL this week too...sooo nice there. I'd definitely recommend Garden Grill if you're looking for a character meal!
Great TR so far! Looking forward to more!
Thank you! :)

Shannon! So happy to see you did start this report! :D

Glad you guys were having a great time despite being sick! I've been sick in Disney and it's not fun! But you're in Disney!

Love seeing your pics of AKL. Definitely on my list to try!

Loved seeing your pics too at the Garden Grill...have never eaten there before. Debated eating there in May, but when I asked Mike his question was: "Are the princesses going to be there?" Me: "No it's Mickey, Pluto, Chip and Dale" Mike: "Oh then I don't want to go, only if there's princesses". So the only character meal we have is...in Norway with the Princesses LOL. (But I love them too so it's still all good) Anyways...sorry for the mini story there but one day I will get to the Garden Grill!

Can't wait to read more!!!! I loved following all your pics on Instagram all that week!

Yeah, it was bound to happen eventually I guess. :( Could have been much worse than a bad cold!
Love seeing your pics of AKL. Definitely on my list to try!
After this trip I'd have to say that AKL currently takes the top spot for me. We had a really fantastic week there.

Bwahahaha, oh Mike! I think meeting the fur characters is a lot more fun but I could see how a good-looking gentlemen like your husband would like the attention from the princesses! ;) Totally check Garden Grill out at some point, I liked it a lot!

I really enjoyed Instagramming over the course of the week!! Good thing I did too since the camera didn't come out quite as often as usual. :)
A great start, can't wait for the rest :)
It's coming up now! :)

By the end of dinner we were FULL. So full. We paid and headed out of The Land by about 7:45. We still had 2 FP+ to use so we decided a lap around the World Showcase was just what we needed to digest a wee bit before heading back to Future World.

In Italy I ordered a Peach Bellini. It was good but apparently I just don't love peach flavor...even when it is mixed with champagne. I managed to choke it down though. ;)

Blurry me!
WDWHolidayEdit-068.jpg

Crowd picture...December 28 at about 8, 8:30PM. Epcot during the last weekend of Food & Wine this year was WAY worse.
WDWHolidayEdit-070.jpg

So we circled around and headed back to The Land. One our way we saw temporary bathrooms being set up in the grassy areas around the sidewalks. I guess they were sort of like large trailers that housed porta-potties. Eventually it occurred to us that these were in preparation for New Year's Eve o_O...so apparently Disney was anticipating such big crowds in Epcot for New Year's Eve that they had to rent extra bathrooms. o_O o_O Yikes! Good thing we had plans elsewhere.

Crowd picture in The Land:
WDWHolidayEdit-071.jpg

We had a FP+ for Soarin' to use! I think our return window was 8:15PM-9:15PM.

120-minute wait? Yeah, no thanks.
WDWHolidayEdit-072.jpg

We got on the ride pretty quickly, within 10 minutes maybe? There's next to no FP+ drama in this report - with the exception of 1 situation they worked perfectly for us and we waited no longer than 10 minutes in the FP+ line (mostly getting on the ride within 5).

Will and I really like this ride but there's no way either of us would wait more than 15-20 minutes for it. And - it's been said many times here - it would be SO much better if the film was in HD or at least cleaned up. I do like how everyone always claps at the end...it always gives me the warm fuzzies.

Next up we had a FP+ for Spaceship Earth from 9:15PM-10:15PM. Whew, good thing I booked that one so we could bypass the 5-minute standby line!

It definitely was not our best journey through the #blessedball. We got stopped multiple times, including during the final descent. I know oftentimes these rides will get stopped if someone with a handicap needs to board or whatever, but this last time I think we were stuck for a good 5-10 minutes, and eventually CMs came through with flashlights. Not sure what they were looking for, but we didn't get evac'd or anything.

Then the ride started back up just in time for the video depicting our healthy future!

YAY!
WDWHolidayEdit-076.jpg

Glad to get some confirmation that I am 100% OK!
WDWHolidayEdit-079.jpg

Apparently Will is going to have an extra appendage growing out of his head in the future...EVERYBODY CONGA!
WDWHolidayEdit-090.jpg

We like those silly videos way too much. :D

Our look into the future wrapped up at about 10PM and we were spent. Originally I'd wanted to stay for IllumNations (due to start at 10:30), but Will pointed out that if we were out too late we'd really be setting ourselves up for a rough week, especially with both of us being sick. So we headed back to the resort. Oh, and here's a myth that I can debunk right here while I'm thinking about it - the transportation to and from AKL is pretty great. Maybe we just had weirdly great luck all week, but I think we only had one instance with a long wait (like 15 minutes). Every other time it was perfect - we were at our destination within 10-15 minutes and only had to share our bus with Kidani guests. Or maybe there were extra buses due to the holiday crowds? At any rate, we enjoyed quick rides and short waits at the bus stop all week.

ANYWAY...once we were back at AKL we headed to the gift shop where I invested in some NyQuil (ended up being an excellent purchase) and we passed out in our comfy, comfy bed with crappy pillows to dream some NyQuil-induced Disney dreams. :inlove: Ahhhh...

First things first...love me that #blessedball :angelic:

And if you did get evac'd from Spaceship Earth...I would have exploded in a jealous rage. Or just be like "aww Shannon you're so lucky." Because being evac'd from the blessed ball is a Disney bucket lister. Well evac'd on any sweet ride would be sweet but SSE...that's the dream.

anyway...back to the trip report...

Day 2: December 29, 2013

I had big plans this morning...big plans. Hit the gym, get a run in, shower and head back to Epcot just in time for rope drop where we'd have breakfast at Sunshine Seasons, hit some rides, then head to World Showcase for lunch.

o_O

What actually happened? We slept. And slept. And slept.

I have no idea what time we woke up, but the first pictures I have from Day 2 are these ones from The Mara...at lunchtime. Time stamp reads 11:30AM. Oops!

African Stew for Will (which he liked):
WDWHolidayEdit-095.jpg

Chicken pita with couscous for me. Very good but SUCH a huge portion! We also each got some coffee.
WDWHolidayEdit-096.jpg

Good morn- er...afternoon, AKL!
WDWHolidayEdit-097.jpg

After a short stroll around the lobby we finally headed out to a park. I feel like we must have done other stuff before then but I didn't take any notes and wasn't as nutso as usual about the pictures...so...err?
WDWHolidayEdit-099.jpg

I do know that eventually we grabbed a bus heading to Animal Kingdom...first time we'd been to this park since 2011 (unless you count running through it during various Disney races). Also, it was raining. Boo!

We had a 2:05-3:05 FP+ for Kilimanjaro Safaris, so we headed there first. I think at this point I'm mostly over taking pictures on this ride...or any ride, really. I find that if I take pictures I come away from the attraction not having really experienced it. Plus, my on-ride pictures aren't exactly award-worthy...and on KS I feel like a lot of the pictures really do look the same, for the most part.

But apparently a rainy day makes for a much more active safari, so I did grab some shots on my phone of the elephants playing in the water (my camera stayed safely in my bag for most of this day). Cute!

So a pretty good safari overall. After grabbing some Mickey pretzels in Harambe we waited out the rain for a bit in a nearby gift shop. Originally I'd been hoping to watch Mickey's Jingle Jungle parade this afternoon, but with the rain we both figured it would be canceled (never actually figured out if the parade did proceed as usual). The night before I'd managed to move our other FP+ around a bit, so I'm pretty sure our next stop was Everest after the rain had lightened up (3:05-4:05 return time). Really fun ride...same ol' same ol' with our disco-dancing friend, sadly. :grumpy:

Our last FP+ of the day was for Dinosaur (4:05-5:05PM return time, I think), a ride neither of us had ridden since our honeymoon in 2009. We had high hopes for this one...how did it pan out? I think my face in the ride picture below tells you all you need to know (I'm in the front row on the left-hand side...Will's next to me in his Bluth Frozen Banana shirt):
IMG_2075.jpg

Yeah...not impressed.

ANYWAY...after Dinosaur we headed out of the park. I think it was close to 5PM and DRY outside! Woohoo!
WDWHolidayEdit-101.jpg

I think AK has my favorite park tree.
WDWHolidayEdit-102.jpg

WDWHolidayEdit-104.jpg

With the rain distracting me I'd forgotten to do one thing I really wanted to get done this week - take one last walk through Camp Minnie-Mickey. Not because I have a sentimental attachment to that area or anything, but because I wanted to make sure to take in all of the great Christmas trees set up in that "land." I always really liked those. Oh well.

Oh I know you love that #blessedball! ;)

Yep, nothing to get jealous over. The CMs just walked by us with the flashlights complaining about how hard it is to walk "up" the ride. And then it came back on. I was definitely getting anxious over possibly getting evac'd though!! Maybe someday!

"Mr. Burn's vulture thing in the episode of "The Simpsons" where Homer is the president of the union...anyone?!"...yup, totally got this reference. :D

Always nice to see a trip report from you! And looks like I might end up following you on Instagram. I upgraded to an iPhone this fall and I've become "that person" when it comes to apps. But I digress...

I do laugh at the people who are like "Are you CRAZY?!" when they find out someone is taking a trip to WDW post-Christmas. In my opinion it's all in how you plan. Glad you two were able to get into the swing of things once you got to the AKL despite being under the weather. Great stuff so far, looking forward to more! ;)

Yay!! Another report from you! I also love the AK tree the most. We were there in November, and I too meant to walk through Camp Minnie Mickey to see if the trees were up yet. Yep, I forgot also!:( Hopefully, they will put them up elsewhere and we will someday get back at Christmas time! Love your Mickey Christmas sweatshirt! I got the same one in November!:D Can't wait to read more!
