The Wild bombs on opening weekend

1 (*) Scary Movie 4 .......... $41.0 million

2 (1) Ice Age: The Meltdown .. $20.0 million

3 (2) The Benchwarmers ....... $10.0 million

4 (*) The Wild ............... $ 9.6 million

This is not good...although Disney did not market the movie very much, to lose the weekend to 3-week old Ice Age 2 is not a good sign, especially with all of the talk of Disney re-inventing its Animation Division......not that this movie would have been effected by that.

Perhaps it should have gone straight to video.

It didn't look good. It didn't get good reviews. It received little marketing from Disney compared to most animation fare. It had to live under the reality that it looked like a copy of last year's Madagascar despite technically being in production before Madagascar ever was. Honestly, being a complete bomb was no surprise, imo.

The film was made by CORE animation and brought under the Disney fold when Disney was looking for the next potential Pixar when things went sour under Eisner. Like Vanguard's "Valiant" last year, they were hoping to find a new successful animation partner. The results speak for themselves and now that Pixar technically IS Disney and vice versa, it is no longer a concern.

This movie is/was never part of Disney's reinvention of its animation division that Iger talks about. I expected it to flop and I think Disney expected it too. I imagine they always hope for the best and never hope for a bomb like this, but obviously there was little here to hope for.

Cars, Meet the Robinson's, Ratouville, American Dog, Enchanted and Rapunzel are all part of this hopeful re-invention.

I agree though, this should have went straight to video. But they gave it a shot.

YES! I was really hopeing this would bomb. It looked terrible. So Micheal Eisner, do you still stand by what you said about people wanting to see more 3-D animation.

Not for nothing, the bomb had nothing to do with 3-D animation which people love -- it was a really poor movie, got terrible reviews, and terrible word of mouth.

Story, story and story is what people want. Everyone is making 3D today.

It didn't hurt that the movie looked like a rip-off of Madagascar. Yes Disney was making the movie first but not first to release.

So, if the movie only made 9million, does anyone know how much it cost them to make this bomb of a movie? Did they atleast break even? (altho I highly doubt it....)

The Wild cost 80 million to produce (that number is directly from CORE, the animators).

80Million? I am having a hard time swallowing that number....why would MOVIE cost 80 million and a ride like M:S cost 100 million? Just doesn't seem to add up...

*goes off to do her own research*

EDIT: I stand corrected. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=wild.htm (the foremost authority on movies:lol:  :lookaroun) States that the production budget was 80 million. That just seems like an insane amount of money for ONE movie to me. If they can build an entire atraction for 100 million, why is it only 20 million less for a 90 minute movie. I just don't get it...:veryconfu

$80 million is pretty normal for an animated feature. The $80 million encompasses everything from preproduction story art to finished piece. You have to pay everyone - they aren't going to do for free. Editing, Story re-writes (cough***Emperors New Groove***cough), reanimation of the story rewrites, standard animation...you know....

That's pretty normal....A crew of 400+ people is not uncommon in making an animated feature. Then add in some marketing (some companies add this in, some don't) and voila...you have some very expensive films ever created.

Of course, now I can't find the web-site which shows production costs compared to domestic and worldwide release grosses......figure....it's an interesting site. I'll look for it.

It's a shame that the movie isn't showing a good start, but to be glad for the failing numbers? That absolutely makes no sense. If you don't like the movie, say so. We all have our different tastes. However, to be happy that it's showing bad results? I don't get the motives. Eisner bashing? That seems so yesterday. Since he's gone, what good does it do?

Personally... I'll probably wait and see this one on video.

Yikes. Its amazing any of these movies ever recoup the money they cost to make.

It is a very good thing The Wild bombed.

First of all, it wasn't made by Disney so it should teach them not to distribute every movie they see.

Second, it teaches them to follow more or less of the old Disney formula in making movies.

Sadly we spent our money to see this Friday. I always find a way to like all Disney movies. This one was BAD. The koala was funny though.

I'm an Eddie Izzard fan and I know that he does voice work in this movie. Are his contributions substantial/funny enough that I would enjoy watching this when it comes to Starz!...this year, probably?

Sincerely,

Well, The Wild got its butt kicked by Ice Age again this weeked. The Wild came in 5th with 8.05 million and Ice Age was at 12.8 million. I went to the movies today to see American Dreamz (save your money!) and I popped my head into The Wild's theatre. It was PACKED!!!! It was wall to wall kids and parents. They were even showing the movie in one of the bigger theatres at the complex. I thought this was kind of odd for a movie that sucks so bad. I guess it had a lot to do with it being a really cold, rainy day here in NJ. I would have liked to be around when the movie let out to hear everyone complaing about how bad it was....:lookaroun
