An oft-troubled robotic dragon, called Murphy by Disneyland employees and fan websites because of its woes, has returned to Fantasmic!, an impressive water-and-light show on the Rivers of America.
The fire-breathing animatronic broke down during a show on Aug. 28. It was immediately shelved.
The dragon never left Disneyland — the repairs were completed on site, said John McClintock, a Disneyland Resort spokesman.
Friday night was the impressive dragon’s first public appearance since the breakdown. Fantasmic! currently appears nightly Friday, Saturday and Sunday; the schedule is subject to change.
The dragon, designed to be more than 40 feet tall and 28 feet wide, weighs about 10,000 pounds. Inspired by a character in “Sleeping Beauty,” the dragon blows a 35-foot-long plume of fire to ignite the Rivers of America in Frontierland.
The park has had a number of technical issues with the animated figure; Disney officials have declined to provide many specifics. The dragon did not appear in the show’s first run last summer.
Eventually, the dragon did appear, on Sept. 1, 2009, and seemed to work fine for nearly a year when it broke down in front of park visitors during a performance.
Here is a video from the dragon’s first appearance last year:
