The units you see are actually men inside, in what could best be described as electric wheelchair / roundabouts.

The setups can get quite complex, depending on how they planned their internal mechanisms and control setup / sound boards.

I saw one guy who ringed his control boards with iPads, and some were connected to webcams for him to have a 360 view, two were soundboards, one ran the voice synthesizer, another controlled effects, etc...

I'll see if I can dig up that video...

That's actually impressive, I could see why they man them. they are extremely large.

Well, depends on the size of the motor you'd have to use. I'd do better to hire someone small and light to man it. Moving 100 or 120 lbs around is lot easier than me at 6'2" and 210 lbs.
