Anyone have any idea what new features this mickey will have over the old one (besides the tux). If it has any new updates, can the original mickey still be used and will it be up to par?

Some Pal Mickey 2.0 Info:
As the ultimate insider, Pal Mickey assists guests in each of the four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort by sharing entertaining information that helps them get the most out of their vacation. Now, with Disney preparing the biggest celebration in theme park history, Pal Mickey is all set to join the fun too!

A special "Happiest Celebration on Earth" edition of the popular talking Mickey Mouse toy will debut to coincide with the May 2005 launch of the 18-month festivities taking place worldwide to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Disneyland.

Nattily dressed in a removable tuxedo jacket, the 10 1/2-inch huggable plush doll has been updated with fun facts about new attractions, shows, character greetings and short wait times across Walt Disney World Resort. Plus, he includes more than 30 trivia questions, seven sing-a-longs and six games, as well as a brand-new carrying lanyard and a louder speaking voice.

The new version of Pal Mickey is available for $65 plus tax and can be found at select sites in Disney's four Florida theme parks and merchandise locations in each of the Walt Disney World resort hotels.

Some more Pal Mickey 2.0 specifics:

- Interactive trivia questions replacing 50% of the jokes
- Increased volume of voice
- 3 additional games (will now have 6)

Think of this like updating your software on your computer. You bought the old version, used and enjoyed it. And you can continue to use it if you want but you won't have all the newest features. There's a newer version out that you can get which gives you different things but for which, you have to buy again.

The old Pal Mikey will continue to work, but, he will never update. So, he'll never talk about "Stitch" or "Soarin'" because they weren't programmed into him. But he will continue to talk about the things he was designed for (unless they turn off a transmitter for that thing of course.) It's up to the individual to decide if they want to get the newest version or keep what they have.

Actually, older Pal Mickeys will be updated at times... just not often, and the updates won't be anything like the new games that will be availale on Pal Mickey 2.0.

What's a glow medallion?

I think it's been established that the Pal Mickey can't update.

Having used one on three or four trips, an increase in show reminders and some wait time information would be nice. He does become mundane after a week or so in the parks.

I thought Pal Mickey was supposed to update itself when you enter the parks. Is this not true?

I have a v 1.0 and thought it could be updated. If that isn't the case then I will never buy a Pal Mickey again as 2.0 will be outdated in a couple years. I don't care if things like games aren't updated, but rides and showtimes should always be updated.

I have Pal Mickey and was told by CM's and even on the box that it will update at the entrance and exit of each park with whatever information is available. When I go down on the 8th of May I will check again.

What will be updated on Pal Mickey 1.0:

-Show & Parade Times
-Short Wait Times for Attractions
-Suggestions to visit new attractions, such as Everest and Soarin'. I know someone remarked on this thread that he won't do that, but that's simply not true. You will get maybe one update from Everest and one from Soarin', but he does update.

What Pal Mickey 1.0 will not update:

-Most trivia will not get updated.
-No new games.
-No new jokes.
-You'll only get a few things new on New Attractions and such, nothing major.
-No new clothes will be made for him, but some of the Pal Mickey 2.0 clothes will fit.

Hopefully that clears up the confusion. ;)

The issue of updates with Pal Mickey was resolved in an article posted here a while back by one of the designers. What you get out of the box is it, no more.
I think the term "update" is misinterpreted in these discussions. When you say showtimes, sure the signal to a Pal can be changed from day to day triggering it to go off and announce the same message at a different time. But as you know the message isn't specific to a particular time, just it will happen soon.
I think the biggest limitation is with new attractions. Like someone already posted, as new ones such as Stitch are added, nothing can be done to include them with an existing Pal.

I thought PM was essentially a radio receiver with some firmware built in, ie - the games and riddles. when he passes by a sensor, he plays whatever the signal is being sent out. we were told to turn him on entering the parks so he could take any updates. we never take him to the parks anynore, because we think he's a pain, but if he doesn't take updates, what a bigger waste of money.

Brad... No need to correct the family guy with a post about your truth, simple information will do. If you are going to correct someone include the original content.
You may need things clarified as well. Updates are what the Pal Mickey will do...even if they are triggered but it will not Download anything new. Some information can be sent to the Pal Mickey, but it must be pre-installed he will not "upgrade"... with the new games and such but I am sure he will keep you up to date with the parks as that is his primary function.

Anyone else know if the older Pal Mickeys going to be for sale at the same time or are they getting pulled off the shelf?

Alrighty then... explain to me how I've seen CMs holding Pal Mickeys... and when I took my mickey near his, it went off... with something I had never heard before. The CM smiled when I looked at him. Obviously there is room for a few new data files in Mickey. :)

Holy Cow!

Well, hopefully this info will help everyone. When announcing the presence of my hundred acre wood friends for their regularly scheduled appearances at the Animal Kingdom Boat Dock area, we had a sort of touch pad device that, depending upon what times and characters were selected, would send a signal out to ALL PAL MICKEYS in the area to let them know that we were ready to have our guests come down and meet some of our friends.:animwink: It's just like a palm pilot device connected into a box on the wall. I doubt that this entire system is being replaced, but I bet that new additions to the announcement choices, as well as new units/signal origin points could be added to accommodate for the new attractions and shows. Therefore, I would think that if Pal Mickey 1.0 could pick up the old information from the signals, he'll pick up the added park information just the same. His reciever did not need an upgrade, the palm pilot just needed a software upgrade. Of course, I could be wrong, but I doubt that when Disney puts out Pal Mickey 2.0 that they would want the guests who bought his predecessor to miss out on their newest attractions. That would be a bad marketing decision. :D We'll see! I'm definitely buying the new one, so we'll try both and see what happens!

Pal Mickey's Phrases are Hardwired On Board and Do Not Update

*sighs*

PAL MICKEY IS INCAPABLE OF DOWNLOADING OR RECEIVING NEW PHRASES. WHAT HE SAYS IS ALL HE WILL EVER SAY.

He's "smart" though so you can walk past the same senor more then once a day and he'll "remember" he said thing A and will say thing B instead.

He will "update" when it comes to the show times but that's a result of the triggers telling him when to mention a parade time. For example, when you bring him in the park on the 1st, the trigger will trigger him at 3pm but if the parade is at 4pm on the 2nd, they change the TRIGGER, not Pal Mickey, to alert him to go off at 4pm instead.

When he comes into the park, he gets the signal that identifies which park he's in and then knows which responces to say. So you bring him into MK, he gets the "play MK messages" signal. That way, when he passes HM, he knows he's at HM and will play the appropritate responses.

Pal Mickey never was intended to download new phrases. He was never going to say new things every time. His phrases/jokes are all pre-programed in and is unable to wirelessly receive new phrases out of the air. His continuing interactivity is only a complex set of smart programing so he can be triggered to alert you to changes like ride wait times and parade times. All the information is already onboard, the trigger schedule just gets changed so it sends the signals to him to pick up. But it doesn't download new phrases.

Pal Mickey came out in 2004. So anything that's been added since then will not be in his vocabulary. He won't be able to say anything about Soarin' because Soarin' didn't exist when he was programmed.

When you take him to one of the Pal Mickey stores and they put him in the drawer, they're resetting him, not updating him. Think of it like a reformat.

2.0 will include more information, more games, songs, and updated information. Your 1.0 will continue to work, but he'll be like Win9x rather then WinXP. A little older and without all the new features.

edit:

From CIOInsight.com:
Bruce Vaughn: Also, you know, that's all pre-programmed stuff in there, and what it's waiting for is a signal from these emitters that says, "Play this joke. Play this sequence." We didn't want to have it say the same thing over and over again, so there's a small computer in there that's making decisions. You can unlock things by the more experience you do, so the more you do, the more the toy has to tell you. We're trying to make sort of a bonded friendship where there is some knowledge of a history and awareness, seeming awareness, from the character.

Nevermind...

Apparently, this won't be solved until people actually get to use the new one in contrast to the old one. All people are trying to do here is offer theories as to what MAY happen. :brick: The true test will be when you use them both and see what happens where. Where did we get the information about the phrases being "on the board". It does make sense and is perfectly plausible, but I'm just curious as to where this information was derived from. As in what is the websight above?

My Pal Mickey told me an Everest Joke when I was standing outside Everest... I think that's pretty darn good programming. Perhaps Pal Mickey already knew about the new attractions, and they're already inside him, just waiting for a signal to be broadcast to be unlocked...

If what you say is true, the Mickey that was aimed at mine probably unlocked a phrase rather than sending a new one. Still, that's pretty good planning for it to unlock an Everest joke...
